I'm inundated by messages from my utility company telling me to get a smart meter. I have heard bad things. What's your view please? 🙏

If you don't have too - I would put it off for as long as possible.
Our bills went up!

How did that happen? A meter is a measuring device it doesn't affect how much energy you use. How were you being billed before hand?

  • Do the current meters work? Yes.
  • Do I need the installation hassle? No. I would need to take time off work for an installation, unless the installers work on weekends.
  • Will it actually save me energy/money? Doubt it. I'm a low energy user, on a decent fixed rate tariff with direct debit discount, paying by monthly variable direct debit (a bill is generated every month after I give a meter reading, and the bill is paid a couple of weeks later for that amount). I use what I use when "I need to use it".

Yep, totally agree with you there.

I have just been "surveyed" about submitting my own meter reading. "How hard is it ?" etc... really - ermmm... easy....

So get prepared for them to change the user interface to make it impossible, "our meter reading service is temporarily unavailable, please ring this pay per minute number to register your reading (incorrectly)"

....so people have to move to smart meters.
