Have you fixed your energy for winter?

Forecasts think the price cap will rise by 10% in October and stay there January, possibly not dropping again until April. The new price cap is due to be announced 27th august.

I haven't seen much talk of the cap likely going up outside of websites focused on that sort of thing, so some people may not be expecting it.
I've fixed for 12 months, it's a tiny bit more expensive than the current flexible rate but will no doubt be cheaper than the winter price cap. I wasn't sure what to do but I prefer peace of mind.

No. We've been on a tracker rate for over a year. It's never gone as high as the capped rate, mostly significantly below it.

UncomfortableSilence · 11/08/2024 20:24

I'm undecided about fixing, there's a calculator on the MSE website where you enter your usage and the fix your supplier is offering and it grades it as to how good it is.

The calculator was also undecided for me, we seem to be a quite high usage house so I may do the year fix just for some stability.

Bjorkdidit · 12/08/2024 03:22

I'm also undecided and currently on an Eon deal that is pegged at slightly below the price cap rates so will increase over winter if I don't do anything.

However last time I looked a fix was more expensive with penalties to swap away within the year so I'm not sure which is best or even if there's much in it because prices have come down quite a bit over the last 6 months so it's not like bills will be as terrifyingly high as they were last winter.

dontcryformeargentina · 12/08/2024 05:15

Yes, I have fixed it at the end of July for a year. The energy prices will go up significantly later 2024 due to current geopolitics ( Cornwall inside prediction).

I’m with Octopus and fixed as there’s no penalty to cancel if need be.

Starlight40 · 12/08/2024 09:21

Same.

I have fixed for 12 months with the Eon Next Pledge tracker which is a variable tariff and guarantees to be £50 per year below the price cap. (£25 per fuel). It's currently very slightly more than I was paying up to 5th August on my last fix with them. There are no exit fees so I can leave any time if there is a better deal available.

Rainbow1901 · 12/08/2024 09:51

Fixed for 12 months with Octopus Energy - it's less than what we are currently paying and will be saving £13.29 per month.
They got their calculations spot on last year and tried to increase our DD mid contract until I complained/complimented them on their calculations for the year - at no time were we in deficit to them and they were not sitting on shed loads of our dosh!! Win Win all round!! 😊

Nellieinthebarn · 12/08/2024 19:52

I fixed with Octopus, I think it was in April.

I'm also getting some credits from the solar panels, and am over paying to build up some extra cushion for winter as DH has lost his winter fuel payment. He is only just over the limit for pension credit.

We both have heart conditions and really cannot cope with being too cold, I am determined not to compromise on heating this winter.

Cartwrightandson · 12/08/2024 19:56

Yes eon next, I pay under £90 per month.

Here's a referral link we'll both get £50

What have you fixed at please

I'm with octupus

And is sc cheaper if fixed ?

Decafflatteplease · 30/08/2024 22:47

We have joined octopus and fixed for 12 months

shellyleppard · 30/08/2024 22:54

I'm with octopus and fixed my price for 12 months in June. Currently in credit with them so hopefully it will last a bit longer x considering the tracker but the high prices in winter are putting me off

MuttsNutts · 30/08/2024 23:01

I’m with Octopus and have just fixed for a year but with no penalties if I want to change at any point. I used the MSE calculator and it recommended that I fix because it’s a good deal, very slightly above the price cap at the moment but will be below from October.

I think it’s open to new customers as well, so if anyone wants to switch to Octopus here’s a referral code - if you use this when you sign up for them, we’ll both get £50 credited to our accounts.

Octopus quoted me this last week.

Have you fixed your energy for winter?
Blondeshavemorefun · 31/08/2024 14:02

I have now done at slightly higher by couple of pence but thought didn't want it to whoosh up to 10p gas like was last year

user1471530109 · 31/08/2024 14:11

I'd they are predicting a 10% rise, I'm not sure fixing it is the right thing to do? The octopus quote is more than 10% higher than their flexible rate 🤔

lap90 · 31/08/2024 14:13

I also fixed with Octopus.

RaraRachael · 31/08/2024 14:16

I haven't as the only way I could was to set up a Direct Debit and I'm not going down that route again.

My fix with octopus was only about 5% above the flexible rate and the standing charge. And you cancel any time. So if they go down in April can switch back.
They also offer free energy sessions.
Lots of referral threads for £50 off if you move tor them.

Thank you to a random mumsnetter whose code I used for Octopus!

Here's mine if anyone wants to switch and share the octopus rewards Grin
