Anyone else not turned the heating on yet?

We haven't turned the heating on yet as trying to save money for when the bills will be high over the winter. We have been fine with big jumpers but we do have a log burner and electric blankets..

Any one else not switched theirs on yet and how are you coping?

Ours stopped working, so I've been miserable for the last few days. This house is draughty and cold at the best of times so it's crap. Someone was supposed to come out today to have a look at it, but no sign of them 😫

Thankfully I have a hot water bottle and a big comfy down duvet, so I'm sleeping ok but really feeling it working from home today - my hands and feet are cold and I have to get up and walk around a lot, and make tea constantly to keep warm.

Oh no! Hope it gets fixed soon

I would count having the log burner on as having the heating on.

mummylove24 · 03/11/2023 16:07

I made the mistake years ago leaving radiators off, then when I needed it….boiler packed up. So my raditors go on for 20 minutes every couple of weeks during summer/warm months, to keep then active. I always thought hot water was enough but the radiators need “exercise” too. Also the damp and mould 🤢

BIWI · 03/11/2023 16:07

I'm keeping everything crossed that BG will be able to fix it tomorrow. (I think it's quite a common fault). Especially because the two portable heaters that we have, I've lent to a friend who is also without heating!

But thankfully, at least @Madamlulu, it's not -5 right now!

No. Our house is south-facing & retains heat.
Got the electricity bill today, it’s already huge…

Pigeonqueen · 03/11/2023 16:09

We haven’t had ours on yet. Trying to build up as much of a buffer in our account as we can for when it’s truly freezing. We have a dehumidifier (£200 ish from AO) that costs pennies to run and we have that running in the hallway upstairs to suck all the damp out and prevent mould - our house has huge issues with it and it’s worse when it’s cold. It’s made a big difference.

Cosh - that's nice.

Our log burner is in one room. The rest of the house is colder. Bedroom around 13 degrees. Why do you have to be so rude?

I think people are frustrated at your posts because they might not have the luxury of being able to heat a room nicely with a wood burner! You have put your heating on, just not the central heating.

But you're not "adapting to being cold". For one, we're barely into winter. For two, you're using heating - you've got a bloody log burner.

Yes we are trying to build up a buffer for when it's really cold also. I think I will look into the dehumidifier as worried about the damp now.

I've just turned mine on for the first time, but only to dry jeans that will stink if they stay damp much longer. Not had to think about it temperature wise!

DiaryofWimpy · 03/11/2023 16:13

Just put mine on today. Going to turn it off once the house is warmed through a bit more.

gingergran · 03/11/2023 16:15

Finally turned it on today … and using heated blanket

Bigoldmachine · 03/11/2023 16:18

Last year we held out too long and got more damp and mould. So this year we are putting heating on for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening to stave that off. We don’t have a dehumidifier though.

Madamlulu · 03/11/2023 16:19

Cosh. I would not have had the temp in bedrooms at 13 degrees pre cost increases. I would have struggled with that temp because I was not used to it. My body HAS adapted to the cold.

Sorry if your circumstances mean it is making you very angry at this.

No heating on yet but I did switch the towel rail on in the bathroom a couple of days ago

Coshofliving · 03/11/2023 16:23

My circumstances have nothing to do with feeling frustrated at someone prating on, 3 days into winter, about their great living without heating journey when they are in fact using heating, due to a log burner being a heating device.

😂

DiaryofWimpy · 03/11/2023 16:32

Now now ladies, play nice.

Gnomegnomegnome · 03/11/2023 16:32

We have an oil filled heater that we move room to room when it’s properly cold but other than that it’s thermals, hats and blankets. We don’t have central heating or a fire/log burner.

No idea on temperature inside but my app says 6 degrees outside.

(I’m not moaning btw, we chose to live like this and could change it if we wanted).

MrsMitford3 · 03/11/2023 16:34

Not us.

I loathe the feeling of forced heat in the house-still have bedroom window and backdoor open.

I like ventilation. When we do eventually put it on it is usually for a short time am and pm-rarely all day

WearingTheHardHat · 03/11/2023 16:36

Not yet- I don't have log burner / other heaters. I just go to bed very very early!! (Plus, I sneak a few hours at a family's members house of an evening a few times a week which is much more comfortable).

It'll go on this weekend I reckon - getting to Nov was my aim, but I usually cave if I get very cold - this year it hasn't been difficult for me. I am in a fortunate position I'm not too worried about the cost but I just really don't like waste and energy consumption generally so am very frugal!

TimeForACider · 03/11/2023 16:38

Ours came on today for the first time since last winter. I’m sat here very cosy with that on and under my fleece blanket watching Pact of Silence on Netflix.

WearingTheHardHat · 03/11/2023 16:39

The number one benefit of heating in my opinion is warm towels after the shower. SO GOOOOOD!!! I am principally going to cave for that reason!
