Anyone else not turned the heating on yet?

We haven't turned the heating on yet as trying to save money for when the bills will be high over the winter. We have been fine with big jumpers but we do have a log burner and electric blankets..

Any one else not switched theirs on yet and how are you coping?

What's with the competitive meanness? Mine's been on for about 6 weeks.

ladeluge · 03/11/2023 16:54

Moved back last week after big internal works. It took 12 weeks. Insulation was a big part of the job. Despite the house being empty for a week prior to my return, and the downstairs is opened up (walls down), the space was surprisingly comfortable. So far anyway!

I don't put the heating on a timer (retired so rising and sleeping times vary lol 😉) Just use the one, two or three hour "boost" switch as required. There is also a half hour boost which is handy for taking the chill out and heating the water too.

Last night about 7.30pm was the first time in a week that I hit the one hour switch. That was enough for me as I run warm anyway. Never have the rad on in the bedroom, it chokes me up and I wake up as if I had a massive hangover (don't drink!). Electric blanket is brilliant. Cool room and lovely warm bed mmmm.

I have a heated throw which I often use instead of turning on the heat, but if I feel very cold, the heat goes on. I don't want to sound smug and I know that heating costs are high, but I don't spend on anything much these days, so I try to be as comfortable as possible. I remember back in the day I only had an open fire and back boiler. Condensation on the single glazed old windows and frost on the inside of the windows. Payback time now.

A log burner is heating

cptartapp · 03/11/2023 17:00

We've had it on two or three times for a couple of hours but I've turned it properly off again last few days.
Heated blanket taking a hammering though.

Jeannie88 · 03/11/2023 17:02

Not been cold during day up north, for me anyway, but on for 20 mins in morning before we get up and half hour at night as temperature drops quite,a bit!

Jeannie88 · 03/11/2023 17:05

Still have all windows open during day, like fresh air! X

elliejjtiny · 03/11/2023 17:06

Not yet. But it's 17 degrees in the living room and we still have the fan on in the bedroom at night because it gets hot in that room for some reason.

Gowlett · 03/11/2023 16:08

No. Our house is south-facing & retains heat.
Got the electricity bill today, it’s already huge…

Surely that makes half of your house north facing, unless you live in a back to back.

Catlord · 03/11/2023 17:10

We haven't- I've only recently moved in though and am used to much colder, older houses so have been fine with jumpers and electric blanket/ throw. I have a lot of Windows open too! Just don't mind the cold until it's been wearing on a while!

GuinnessBird · 03/11/2023 17:21

You haven't turned the heating on but you have a log burner? The log burner is heating.

Rainbow1901 · 03/11/2023 17:27

The thermostat is set - if it goes cold enough it comes on automatically. Martin Lewis made a comment about people turning up their themostats just because it is winter. Not necessary really.

Gro · 03/11/2023 17:29

Ours is set for 3 hours in the evening if it drops below 18. I think it has only come on a handful of times so far.

TeenLifeMum · 03/11/2023 17:31

We had it on for one cold day in October and that’s it so far. It’s feeling colder tonight though. Temp is 17.4 currently. I might break tonight but it hasn’t been under 19 degrees until today here.

Torganer · 03/11/2023 17:33

Yes, and we have a dehumidifier as helps get the washing dry. Luckily haven’t had to put it on too often. We have a young child so wouldn’t want to use a log burner due to the pollution.

Somewhatchallenging · 03/11/2023 17:39

No, not had any heating on yet. We have a couple of heated throws that we are about to get out and might put those on if sitting in the evening. But it’s not really cold enough for heating to go on.

imnottoofussed · 03/11/2023 17:39

We've had the gas fire on a few times in the day time and the heating on every evening for about the last two weeks.

Also I'm in the camp that having your log burner on is having the heating on.

It's like me saying no I've not had my heating on just my gas fire Confused

Doggymummar · 03/11/2023 17:41

Soon as it goes under 20 the heating comes on automatically, that's several times a day these days. I have a heated blanket poncho thing as well and an electric fire in fron room.

Jewelspun · 03/11/2023 17:49

No heating on here. It's very mild here in Wales.

Danielle9891 · 03/11/2023 18:02

I live in a small village in Northern Ireland so we've got a coal fire and oil heating. Unfortunately, I bought new sofas and didn't measure if they fitted my small sitting room. The corner of the sofa is only 2 feet away from the fire so we can't use the fire anymore. 😭 I've just put the heating on a 1 hour boost.

Madamlulu · 03/11/2023 16:05

Sonypony

I'm interested in the dehumidifier and was wondering if I should buy one. How do you find it helps? I was particularly thinking about it for drying washing but also is it generally good for making the air dryer and does that help when the house is colder? Sorry to be so clueless on this subject

It pulls loads of water out of the air. Without it the windows are wet every morning, with it none at all. The main reason we use it is to prevent damp causing mould, which it is brilliant for. I wouldn't be without it. If it broke tomorrow I would replace it ASAP. But it helps dry the laundry faster too. I don't notice any cost for running it either. Although I only put it on overnight, and for 4 hours of that it's on the cheaper night rate we have for our electric car.

TheChosenTwo · 03/11/2023 18:20

It’s been fairly mild here down in the SE where I am but it’s clicked in a few times. Our house is really well insulated but the heating is never switched off, we just keep it set to come on when it drops below a certain temperature.
It tends to be on in the kitchen in the mornings now but I don’t know if anyone’s bedroom heating has come on yet, ours doesn’t seem to have.
We had a fire a few weeks ago because it was really miserable and we wanted to hang out at home late afternoon, the logs cost £30 because we hadn’t gotten round to organising a delivery at that point. They were all gone in one night!

theysaiditgetseasier · 03/11/2023 18:22

Mines been on a few times I'm in SE, I'm a hot person who's sweated and cursed the heat all through summer, so I think that's why I'm feeling the cold a bit more as I've been so hot for so long!

Few hours in the morning and few in the evening,

TheDogsKnees · 03/11/2023 18:38

Not needed to yet. I usually try and hold off til November but it's still quite mild where we are (Cheshire) - I've had the patio doors open for some of the afternoon while the dog trots in and out! I have bought a 15kg gas bottle today for our mobile gas fire in preparation for when the temp drops. We live in a terraced three storey house, downstairs is mostly open plan so can get chilly and the central heating doesnt seem to touch it hence the gasfire. Upstairs doesn't get too cold often. We're using blankets in the living room (upstairs) and everyone has teddy/fleece bedding for at night. We came off a fixed rate energy tariff last month so this is our first winter with the increased prices, although fortunately they're not as bad as last winters prices.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 03/11/2023 18:43

Haven't had the heating on yet. Outside temp is still in double digits and it's comfortable enough in the house, but it's getting on for the time when it'll go on for an hour before bed and and hour first thing.

trader21c · 03/11/2023 18:51

I put mine on for an hour in the evening on Weds was holding out until November … quite chilly in the house here - electric throws have come out during the day if I’m on my own
