Car insurance Range Rover

I've got a 2018 Evoque and my insurance this year has tripled. The insurer said they're not insuring them any more due to them being the number one most stolen car. Anyone else heard about this and who did you find to insure you most competitively?

I’m trying to insure my RR evoque 2017. I’m in Yorkshire… last year with Sainsburys 700£. THey more than tripled it to £3k

Ive tried everywhere - and can’t get anything under 2800£ & most wont insure. It’s not even the type of RR that’s being stolen???!! And I’m early 50’s single parent.

Value has dropped massively due to people being unable to insure. So now I can’t sell it as owe more than it’s worth.

Truly horrendous. What can be done??

InTheRainOnATrain · 05/12/2023 08:04

@NorthernComfort3001 JLR recalled all cars from 2018 onwards for a theft mitigation software update. So I don’t know if that leaves your 2017 model as the newest that still has the vulnerabilities? I’m no expert though so that may be nothing but just a thought that occurred to me. And obviously it doesn’t help your situation at all which SUCKS. I have a Discovery Sport and my insurance renews end of Jan which is really worrying me.

Flipfloppin · 05/12/2023 09:18

Land Rover do insurance themselves, which may be worth looking at?

Spottywombat · 05/12/2023 09:25

This is all over the car channels on YouTube.

JLR have their own recovery team as the vehicles are being nicked from them too.

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 05/12/2023 09:34

Land Rover won’t insure RR anymore

YoullCatchYourDeathInTheFog · 05/12/2023 09:45

I read in the Guardian comments section that the situation was exacerbated by the in house JLR insurance being withdrawn a year ago. A whole bunch of Range Rovers came into the general insurance market, loads of them then got stolen, and the insurers reacted accordingly.

Not really surprising if you're leaving a high value item in the street with no effective security measure in force: it's like me getting insurance to leave a Chanel handbag on the pavement outside my house overnight.

A mate of mine has an Evoque - fortunately for him they have two other cars so he parks them one centimetre from the front and rear of the RR each night to box it in.

Flipfloppin · 05/12/2023 10:17

Ah yes, I see they haven’t offered insurance since 2022.
Never trust a dealership salesman for info, eh?

JanewaysBun · 05/12/2023 10:28

The theft rate in my part of london is crazy, a huge proportion of my friends have had a RR stolen (often where it's parked/hidden nearby so has been retrieved), JLR clearly need to improve their systems

Flipfloppin · 05/12/2023 13:49

I filled it out to check and computer said no to me! Brand new car/ non London address!

Mat1 · 05/12/2023 21:11

Yep, me too! Doesn't say much for their own product?

InTheRainOnATrain · 05/12/2023 21:12

Yikes! It would cover me but at ludicrous expense.

Oldhag5 · 05/12/2023 21:24

Is this the same for Landrover Discovery and Discovery Sport or specifically Range Rovers?

Mat1 · 06/12/2023 00:16

Yep!

Mat1 · 06/12/2023 03:38

Who insured you?

NorthernComfort3001 · 06/12/2023 07:32

Landrover / AA/ Elephant / admiral immediate decline for me. (7 year old evoque)
Finally got Sainsburys insurance at 2700.
I could cry.
Car almost worthless & no chance of selling at an acceptable price when insurance is that.
Only thing to do is get rid but the finance on it is nearly double what they claim I’d get for it now.
No Xmas at this house….

NorthernComfort3001 · 06/12/2023 07:34

My friend has a RR and just paid 6k. ( Also up North)

HolidayHappy123 · 06/12/2023 07:42

I'm fucked. Had 2 RR thefts in 3 years and can't get insurance. Also can't sell the bloody thing - prices have crashed due to the insurance problems and my just 3 year old £80k car is now only worth £30k.

HauntedGusset · 04/10/2023 15:21

Mine didn't go up. But then I drive a 15 yr old Skoda 🤣

Just get a cheaper to buy/tax/run/insure car if the running costs are too high. Nobody living in London or any other major city needs a Range Rover, surely?

This ^
I do not equate cost of living woes to buying and insuring a high spec vehicle which is of no use if you live in the city. Rural owners - they need them
I drive a 2003 Toyota yaris and my insurance went up by £70 !

Really unhelpful comment. Do you NEED your 2003 Toyota Yaris? Or could you walk/crawl wherever it is you need to go?

I just tried to get a quote from Landrover. I've got full no claims, a garage, no points on my license and got a straight decline. I really feel for Range Rover owners as not sure what you can do when even the manufacturer won't insure their own product.

Why on earth did you buy a third RR after having two stolen in 3 years!?

Flipfloppin · 06/12/2023 08:52

I don’t think Land Rover offer insurance. My insurance is just over £1k elsewhere. On a 100k car, so double that of my 40k car I’ve just traded in. It obviously depends on your postcode mostly.

If your car is pre 2018 make sure JLR update it to be more secure though. It’s done free of charge.

It might have been the same car??
The standard thing is steal the car, dump it locally, wait and see if it’s being tracked. So if you notice it’s gone quickly enough then there’s a fairly decent chance of recovering it. (this also happened to us, we got it back within the hour)

Flipfloppin · 06/12/2023 09:11

I’m going to agree though- insurance on an expensive car going up is not the cost of living crisis.

Insurance has been going up on lots of cars in the last few years though. More Than are leaving the car insurance market. That’s the bigger issue.

JLR knew their older cars were easy to steal and have done nothing until now the rectify the issue. They’ve not reacted until orders for new cars started to be cancelled because insurance was so high/ unable to obtain.

If I’d had 2 cars stolen from the same manufacturer, I’d absolutely vote with my feet. It’s the only power you have!

HolidayHappy123 · 06/12/2023 09:20

@AuContraire a good question. Lunacy???

First DH’s was stolen and he didn’t replace it. Then mine was stolen and there wasn’t anything I wanted to replace it with so I bought another one and armed it with a Ghost Immobiliser and a steering wheel lock. Last attempted theft they cut the steering wheel lock off and did £10k of damage but couldn’t start it because of the Ghost.

It has to go as my insurance expired next week. Still don’t know what to buy as a replacement as I really love my RR. Probably a Porsche Taycan or Cayenne.
