Take-away coffee

Had a late night working util 1am, then was up at 7am to drop off DD to the train station and looking at a very busy day ahead. There is a Costa at our train station, I hadn't had any breakfast and for a few seconds I contemplated getting myself a coffee - to pick me up and to spare the effort of making one at home. I love take-away coffee, it always feels like a treat. Then I remembered that this coffee would now be in the region of £4.50. And decided that for this money, I can wait until I get home and make one there.
If this take-away coffee had been £3.00-ish like before I would not think twice. I can still afford it technically but just can't justify this cost for a cup of hot drink.
I wonder if coffee chains will feel the impact or if there are still enough customers paying these prices?

I love takeaway coffee as a treat. Probably have it once a week with friends or on the go. Also if anyone is with Vodafone, you get rewards and often they have a free regular drink at costa

I do this but for the first time last week all the voucher codes had been used up . I don't think as many people are willing to pay Costa prices and hold out for the rewards.

I get a Greggs white coffee £1.55 or a McDonalds white coffee £1.29 .

As another poster said you also can build up points to get a free one .

I'm in London zone 2; where are you all getting charged £4–£5 for coffees? Confused

It’s not everywhere, but it’s definitely creeping up to £4 for basic coffees.

my regular flat white usually 3.75 in zone 2.

anyone getting oat milk or bigger cups is easily going into £4.

SecretShambles · 02/09/2023 02:30

Anyone wanting to stock up on iced coffee's Co op has a deal on the jimmys, reduced to £1.25 a bottle.

I travel a lot for work so it's an ice pack in a freezer bag with a couple of them for me now rather than waste 2 x £5 St the services. Or those Cali Farms bottles are like £2 for a big 1l bottle.

Equimum · 02/09/2023 07:27

I used to regularly treat myself to a Costa, but it's now just too expensive to enjoy. DH and I did pop in with the kids a few weeks back. Two lattes and a couple of cakes was over £15 which is ridiculous!

tooanxious · 02/09/2023 07:45

We invested in a Nespresso pop machine, and a reusable coffee mug for work, I still have coffee everyday but it works out to be about 60p a cup not the £3/4 I was spending

Loverofoxbowlakes · 02/09/2023 08:34

My mobile contract is with Three - on their app you can get any barrista drink for a quid once a week - I have been known to take liberties with this offer ;-)

I have an oat flat white and it's £3.30 in one place, £3.20 in the other. That's in my own keepcup though, which must make at least some of the difference.
I feel very lucky! They both do excellent coffee too, and are lovely with staff who really make you feel like a regular.

I've stopped this in the last x6 months too. We used to take turns in getting a round of take out coffee. Not any longer, I can't justify 3.85 for a coffee.

I purchased this type of milk frother 5 years ago and
I then purchased a n automatic bean to cup marine on amazon warehouse - where I got a £300 reduction as it has a scuff mark on the side.

I still have the occasion coffee out but coffee at home is tasty so its a treat thats not expensive

I had a tab machine before I swapped to a bean to cup and although that was very good it has worked out better with the free choice of coffee beans

bag of beans is £10 on amazon

I've had fun with researching and buying various gadgets & trying lots of beans. It's a fairly harmless hobby !

what are your findings with beans?

I like lavazza and pelican rouge

Therealjudgejudy · 02/09/2023 13:28

Its €4.80 for a small iced latte in Starbucks here..

Pleaseme · 02/09/2023 13:35

In my local Co-op they now include costa coffee from a machine as part of the meal deal. £3.50 for coffee+sandwich+ snack which seems reasonable.

MarkWithaC · 02/09/2023 13:35

I've used different home paraphernalia over the years (a stovetop and a milk frother, an Aeropress, a mini barista-style machine), but you just can't replicate a coffee made by a professional on a proper industrial-size machine. Plus it's nice to go to the cafe, have a chat with the barista, be 'spoiled' a little bit etc. These days I drink black French-press coffee at home and just have a flat white out when I feel like a treat.
I do buy good beans; Cafe Direct or Union, usually. Or Dark Arts for a real treat; they're amazing but they are £££.

I do this too it’s with cafe Nero though rather than Costa.

Sorry, yeah Café Nero not Costa.

And it's any barrista drink - you want a super duper mocha-chocca frappe-latte-chino with syrup and a dash of strawberry sauce? A quid.

Bargain!

MattDamon · 08/09/2023 12:16

A new Starbucks just opened near us in London and every time I walk by it's heaving. People queued up out the door.

NorthernGirlie · 09/09/2023 21:58

I used to love a coffee put up the prices are crazy now. I like a Mcdonald coffee or a Greggs' flat white though

I take a flask to work now as it used to nark me when people nicked my milk or used my nice instant and left their nescafe shite untouched

I like an iced coffee though - just watched someone make one with a milk frother on tiktok so I might order 1 of those!

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 12/09/2023 14:11

I love a take away coffee, but have massively cut back. I added up the cost across the week and was horrified.

xogossipgirlxo · 13/09/2023 13:56

Wow, we went out with husband to costa yesterday and large latte with oat milk really is £4.55 😵‍💫 My medium latte with normal milk was £3.75. It’s monthly treat then.

What a rip-off. And IMO Costa is rubbish. It’s clearly the wrong place to go.
I get a much better deal at my favourite local indie places in Zone 2 London -beautiful coffee, lovely surroundings and great service, and a flat white with oat for £3.30 (in your own keep cup).

Ireolu · 22/09/2023 22:11

We bought a bean to cup machine at the start of lockdown. In 3 yrs I have bought 1 or 2 take away coffees. 1kg of beans also last us ages.

MikeRafone · 23/09/2023 05:56

lasts me two weeks, 3 if I’m lucky - but I drink coffee till the cows come home!

pumpkintits · 19/10/2023 20:19

I absolutely love a trip to a cafe or coffee shop, but I have cut down going due to the cost. After I finish work on a Tuesday I would usually pop to Costa for a small oat milk latte and a bag of popcorn before picking the kids up from childcare, but at £4.95 when we are budgeting every penny I've stopped doing that. We do have a fancy coffee machine at home though and I can make a better latte than Costa so I don't feel I'm missing out too much. It's just that lovely, peaceful 45 minutes of peace without the kids where I get to read my book that I really miss 😭

CrazyHamsterLady · 19/10/2023 22:14

It’s all expensive. We went to Pret the other day and bought the following: 2 x hot chocolates, 3 x baguettes, 2 x pastries, 1 x yogurt and fruit breakfast bowl. It was £32 😬
