Take-away coffee

Had a late night working util 1am, then was up at 7am to drop off DD to the train station and looking at a very busy day ahead. There is a Costa at our train station, I hadn't had any breakfast and for a few seconds I contemplated getting myself a coffee - to pick me up and to spare the effort of making one at home. I love take-away coffee, it always feels like a treat. Then I remembered that this coffee would now be in the region of £4.50. And decided that for this money, I can wait until I get home and make one there.
If this take-away coffee had been £3.00-ish like before I would not think twice. I can still afford it technically but just can't justify this cost for a cup of hot drink.
I wonder if coffee chains will feel the impact or if there are still enough customers paying these prices?

Nothing gets away of my daily Americano from Caffe Nero. I do get a student discount, though (currently 25%) but even if I didn't I'd still go there. I don't smoke, rarely drink or buy new clothes, so spending roughly £60 a month for something I love doing (the ritual and taste) is no biggie. I like their loyalty card scheme as well.

Am I the only one frequenting coffee shops ?(Starbucks)

ChickenNugget6 · 19/10/2023 22:56

A guilty pleasure of mine is going out and getting a nice coffee. It's bad but it makes me feel so happy. I bought an aeropress machine and now I make the best coffees at home. If I go out and get one, it doesn't taste half as nice as the one I make! I do get the festive coffees though. >.<

All in all, it's way too expensive.

I absolutely love a trip to a cafe or coffee shop, but I have cut down going due to the cost. After I finish work on a Tuesday I would usually pop to Costa for a small oat milk latte and a bag of popcorn before picking the kids up from childcare, but at £4.95 when we are budgeting every penny I've stopped doing that. We do have a fancy coffee machine at home though and I can make a better latte than Costa so I don't feel I'm missing out too much. It's just that lovely, peaceful 45 minutes of peace without the kids where I get to read my book that I really miss 😭

I feel this from my core :'(

ChickenNugget6 · 19/10/2023 23:03

Oh guys I really miss getting coffees :'(

... Sometimes I drive to Tim Hortons, the 2 kids fall asleep, then I re-evaluate and turn back without the coffee. I can't justify it anymore.

Starlightstarbright2 · 19/10/2023 23:08

I occasionally get one on the way to work …
I go to Greggs .. it is reasonably priced

AdoraBell · 19/10/2023 23:09

The price of coffee has increased. We still go for coffee most days. We usually have Americano coffee in Cafe Nero, it’s crept up to £2.95/£3.

CrabbiesGingerBeer · 19/10/2023 23:25

I got a McDonalds coffee the other day (won it in their current competition) and it was actually really nice. It’s much cheaper than a coffee shop but the problem is, it’s fine for take out but not much use if you like the coffee shop ambiance with a nice mug.

Or if you have a dairy intolerance/allergy 😞

Moogoopixie · 20/10/2023 02:51

Stopped using Costa cause of price plus its over rated now tbh if I'm going away I'll grab a McDonald's coffee I take coffee to work with me daily from home much more cost effective takeaway coffee is definitely a treat

oiltrader · 20/10/2023 09:11

DH bought us a Sage Oracle last week. the coffee from it is amazing. i will be cutting down on trips to to the coffee shop now and invite the girls over for our elevences x

PlasticSheetingRTÉNews · 20/10/2023 09:15

I’m in Dublin.

Im fortunate to not have to be overly price conscious day-to-day so generally used to think nothing of grabbing a coffee on my way to work.

My usual coffee now costs me €5.40 😬

I’ve definitely been walking past the coffee shop in the last few weeks instead of going in.

PinkLemons99 · 20/10/2023 09:24

I buy a coffee out once or twice a week when meeting up with friends.
However, it's a really good independent coffee shop in a little town in Ireland and we even have our table reserved on a Tuesday morning, so it's our own version of Friends. 😂

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 20/10/2023 09:40

Greggs is ok My coffee in Neros is about 3.30 but it's a once or twice a week treat If I buy coffee alone it's a greggs or maccas.

hitmebabyonemoretime21 · 20/10/2023 14:18

Haven't been to Starbucks in yearsss, my daughter is nearly 10 and wanted a strawberry refresher with 2 pumps of caramel as a treat (she has seen her older cousin get it before). It cost me £6 for the smallest one!!! My jaw nearly hit the floor, I can afford it, we are comfortable but not rich. I didn't want to pay it but I was committed and it was too far gone - never again!

Nodashians · 20/10/2023 16:20

I used to buy five or six per week, now they are almost £5 I only buy one per week from
a McDonald’s or Greggs. I don’t like the feeling of being ripped off.

LuckOfTheDrawer · 21/10/2023 13:51

A Costa flat white is now £3.50. I agree with others on this thread, it just seems to tip it over into not even a nice treat now, as I'd be too offended by the cost to enjoy it properly 😄.

I don't know - sometimes I think that we've become too used to having everything and everything being relatively cheap though.

ThreeCanKeepASecret · 21/10/2023 13:53

I never buy coffee out anymore. I bought a bean to cup machine a few years ago and buy a kilo of beans a month for about £20. Keeps two of us in coffee for a month.

LuckOfTheDrawer · 21/10/2023 13:57

I'd love a bean to cup coffee machine, but I don't have enough work surface space, and at our current rate of buying coffees out, it would take us ~19.1 years to break even 😄.

We've got a De Longhi coffee machine at home, and DH significantly improved his barista skills recently, so we're happy enough with that atm.

minipie · 21/10/2023 14:00

I’ve bought a fancy coffee machine too, I’m not buying takeaway coffees any more and no throwaway paper cups either (could never fit a keep cup in my bag) and the coffee is just as nice, plus I can sit on my sofa and drink it. I do still go to coffee shops but only if meeting a friend now.

I agree coffee shops are going to struggle. Especially the ones that don’t have any other sidelines - lots around here also do brunch or sell deli items or bakery goods.

ThreeCanKeepASecret · 21/10/2023 14:41

My coffee machine came from the DeLonghi ebay outlet more than five years ago. We were amazed to find the 'stats' screen the other month 7718 cups of coffee 😳, I'd buy the same again if it broke. I am sure it was less than £300.

Gymmum82 · 21/10/2023 14:49

I now go to greggs or McDonald’s for coffee. I love a pumpkin spiced latte and would normally head straight for Starbucks as soon as they are on the menu but I’ve not even had one this year. Too expensive.
Never used to have to watch what I spend but now it’s the week before pay day and im wondering how im going to get through the week

littleteapot86 · 22/10/2023 09:20

whoever mentioned o2 customers get a free Greggs coffee each week - thank you! Didn't know that.

falalalalal · 22/10/2023 09:23

Costa coffee is just warm milk IMO. Why wouldn't you brew your own. Buy a small cafetiere and ground coffee. Better than anything you'll buy at Costa.

If you have had the machine for 5 years then that's around 4 cups a day.
