How much gas and electricity are we all using? (ours attached)

We just got our latest bill. It's so confusing because instead of sending us a bill every month, or even every two or three months, they send it every 50 days.

Anyway. Here is our latest bill - it shows consumption for both gas and electricity, and price per unit. There are two of us in a four-bedroom house, we both work from home, and are quite careful with both utilities. But the gas bill seems horrendous to me when we only have the heating on for an hour a day to 17 degrees, and hot water on for half an hour a day.

Interested to know how we fare compared to people with similar set ups.

In January we used 1686 kWh of gas and 295 kWh of electric. That’s having the hot water on twice a day for an hour and the heating only 2 hours a day most days. I can only assume the size of the house makes more of a difference than I thought. I want to cry when I see people on here saying they have their heating on all day!! I can only imagine what our bills would be if we left it on all day. Roll on spring!!

I'm between 4 and 12 Kwh a day for gas.

Two bedroomed bungalow, heating is gas, cooker is gas hob and electric oven.

The boiler was new a couple of months ago and is not instantaneous for hot water.

The place is about 20 years old, it was a new build when I moved in. There have been a few problems but one thing they did get right was the insulation.

Once the house is warm it stays that way. Great in the winter but a nightmare in summer (I use portable air con).

I use a heated throw most of the time (not working due to disability). My thermostat is on 10 and will go up to 17 when I have a bath so I'm warm while I dry off.

4 hours a day for £5.60/56 kWh per day is not an outrageous amount, but does feel a bit on the expensive side, particularly since 2 hours of those are hot water.

Have you tried putting the heating on at the same time as the hot water, or using less hot water ?

How is your hot water tank insulated ?

Ooo heating on the same time as the water - would this make a difference?? I’ll try it.

Hmm this month we used 288 units kWh gas & 358 kWh electricity.

Detached 4 bed house, 2 adults at home, 2 kids.

constantly wearing thermals, slippers, using blankets etc

right I’m seeing what others use in similiar situations

It looks like you used approx 75kwh gas a day. We have a similar size house and generally used 100-150kwh per day over the same period. We keep the house at 18 degrees 6am to 9pm and 14 overnight.

What temp are you heating the house up from to get to 17 degrees? The first hour will use a lot more kwh than maintaining the temperature.

For example when we wake at 6am our house might be 14 degrees and the boiler runs for 3 hours to get it to 18. The first 2 hours it is using 26kwh per hour and we use around 75 kwh in these 3 hours to get the temp up to 18.

We also use a further 10 kwh twice a day to heat water (it comes on for 30 min both times).

e.g. this is our gas for 6th feb 157kwh

That seems like a lot. We used 194 units of gas from 18th Dec to 9 Feb, similar times, 56 days. We have both heating and hot water on for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. I doubt if either always remain on for the whole hour. Thermostat is set to 14 in the hall where it is cold, but rest of house remains between 18 to 20 depending on amount of sun and weather. With 2 teens there are a lot of showers and we prefer to keep water hot so it's always avaliable and the tank is well insulated. House is modern 3 story mid terrace and middle floor where living rooms are stay warmest. We WFH and wear layers in the day if it is cold, we have lots of wool. I feel like the worst of the winter is over, living room is currently 21.5 at 1.40pm from sun coming in, no heating been on since early morning.
