How much gas and electricity are we all using? (ours attached)

We just got our latest bill. It's so confusing because instead of sending us a bill every month, or even every two or three months, they send it every 50 days.

Anyway. Here is our latest bill - it shows consumption for both gas and electricity, and price per unit. There are two of us in a four-bedroom house, we both work from home, and are quite careful with both utilities. But the gas bill seems horrendous to me when we only have the heating on for an hour a day to 17 degrees, and hot water on for half an hour a day.

Interested to know how we fare compared to people with similar set ups.

MNisMyGuiltyPleasure - We only have a smart meter for our electric as well, Scottish Power said they couldn't give us one for gas, something to do with our meter apparently. The app will still show you a graph for your gas usage so you can compare it to when you have your heating on.

I looked on the app - there's no usage record of gas at all. Just electricity...

We're in a Victoria semi (solid walls so no insulation) and our energy bills have been horrendous.

15/12-15/1 our gas was 431kWh and electric was 239 kWh

Before Christmas we had it on for a couple of hours a day during the cold snap, but since the beginning of January it's been on for an hour a day. Total bill was gas £221 and electric £154.

It's just completely unsustainable. I can't work due to disability so we're only on one income.

BMW6 · 07/02/2023 17:10

I don't understand this AT ALL.

We are 2 people in a 2 bed terrace. We have the gas CH on all day and evening, so roughly 7am to 11pm set at 19 degrees, 15 overnight, every single day.

30th December to 30th January We used 153 units of gas, just over 1700 kWh. Total cost Inc standing charges £186.

I get that OP has 2 more bedrooms but surely there shouldn't be this much difference in useage and costs?

Does it come down to the type of boiler you have do you think?

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/02/2023 17:12

So just under £600 for 2mths

So £300 a month

That's good imo for 2 cold winter months

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/02/2023 17:13

Tho sorry just seen an hour a day

So no that's high

Poppymil · 07/02/2023 17:14

I've just moved in dec, me my mum and 11 month of DD... they're saying from 21st dec to 21st Jan we've used £367! We have the heating on 5-8 in the morning and 4-7 in the evening. If electric was higher I could understand but gas is the saying £270 of this bill!

plumduck · 07/02/2023 17:15

Can u switch?

dementedpixie · 07/02/2023 17:23

Switching will not help as no suppliers will be offering a cheaper rate

My December and January usage is shown. 4 bed detached in Scotland with a system boiler with hot water cylinder.

That makes little sense because the price cap for gas is about 10p per kWh.

So if you use 431 kWh your bill should be around £43 for that month.

Unless you are reporting different numbers for your usage period and bill period.

431 kWh for 1 month is about 1.3m3 or 1.3 units a day. That is pretty much consistent with your stated usage (1 hour a day). Your bill should be approx. £1.50 a day plus the standing charge, not more than £2 a day I guess.

So if you were billed £221 for a months gas that is wrong. If you were billed £221 for a quarter, that is more like it.

Sounds about right to me.

6hours a day x £1.50 an hour (rough guess) x 30 days per month = £270.

Thanks - I'm just looking at my last bill in a bit more detail. There's got to be a mistake somewhere because our house can't be leaking that much energy. If you can help me identify it, I'd be overjoyed Grin

Here's my readings - the meter is in m3 and as I'm double checking the kWh converter it's coming up with 779kwh for the total month compared to 2163 that the bill says that we used.

Your meter is in m3 and your bill is in ft3x100 ?

GasPanic · 07/02/2023 17:48

If that is the case they are billing you about 3x as much as they should if you are reporting the units in m3.

Give them a ring, tell them your meter is in m3 and they are billing you in ft3x100. They may want a photo of your meter.

Then figure out how to spend all the money you've saved.

I'm going to put the bloody heating on a bit more 😂

Our bill just came in at 445 for the month. We have a brand new boiler and the bills are still extortionate

What was your kWh use for the month?

Electricity harder to meter incorrectly.

Gas they sometimes get the units wrong. We have seen on here a number of times.

To analyse it really require number of hours you have boiler on per day, gas bill per month.

Your bill should be around £1-£2 per hour you have the boiler on if it is not thermostated (if you have it on the thermostat to maintain temperature it is harder to guess what it should be).

So if you have your boiler on for say 1 hour a day, and your gas bill is £180 a month (£6 per day) that is almost certain to be wrong somewhere. 1 hour a day and your bill is £60 per month, that is more reasonable.

RainyDaysareCarp · 08/02/2023 16:57

We are gas 93 units for Dec and electricity 225 kWh. Two of us in a 3 bed new detached with guests for 5 days. Heating and water all gas. Heating on twice a day for about 90 mins each time. We use dishwasher daily and every other day washing machine and a tumble.

Userusing1 · 09/02/2023 06:53

We just had our gas bill, British Gas only bill every 6 months, no gas smart meter as the electric smart meter doesn't send readings. For 6 months from August 10th it was £929 which was mainly heating, we use very little hot ware as we have electric shower and a dishwasher.

Out of the £929 it looks like the month of January to 7 February was about £325 so your £380 for half of December and all of January OP doesn't look that different to ours and we have our heating on most days at around 18-20c and off at night, we are retired so at home a lot in the winter

Electric was about £720 for the same 6 month period

SeatonCarew · 10/02/2023 19:36

BarbaraofSeville · 07/02/2023 10:59

It's no surprise to use a lot of gas in that time period. If you remember, just before Christmas, it was very cold for a good week or two. If your insulation isn't great you might find that your heating was on for more than an hour a day to keep your house at 17 C. We have a 2 bed house and very good insulation and the house will drop to 15/16 C overnight if it's very cold.

That bill doesn't look at all unusual. You'll probably use more than half your annual gas in the 3 month period Dec - Feb.

Plus the unit rates are 2-3 times higher what they were last winter, which makes gas especially look so much higher.

I completely agree with this. Don't forget OP we are in the dog days of winter. In the summer months you will spend virtually nothing on heating. Also would just add a lot of the first hour's heating is spent warming up the pipes and getting things up to temperature. Maybe add another half hour to an hour to get more benefit?

Every house is different, and people just chirruping what they have spent without any context can be very unhelpful sometimes.

Qqbank01 · 10/02/2023 23:06

I have my bills for gas £71.59 without standing charge, i am using heating and shower at night for around 2 hours, hob and oven are electricity. We have 2 adults and 1 DS in 1950 3 bedroom semi, boiler is not new but not a very old one.
Almost £2.4 per day for heating and shower? where are the gas gone for?

Piccalillies · 11/02/2023 09:20

We used 2174Kwh of gas in January, which would equate to 3500Kwh for a 50 day period but we have our heating on most days for 16 hours (minimum of 8 hours) and over the very cold period for 24 hours, set at 20 degrees. We are in a relatively new build three bed house.

If you only have your heating on for 1.5 hours per day, you either have a gas leak or one of the readings is incorrect
