Swapped to own brands?

Has the cost of living caused you to try to make cuts in your shopping? I can't believe the prices of things rising! Week on week alone! It's getting ridiculous! I've tried to swap to own brand things now! I love Heinz Mayo! But for £4.10 I just can't justify it! So tesco own Brand it now is. Any one recommend an own brand that fast like Heinz? 🤞

Yes. Tesco Stockwell weeatabix seems inflation-proof at 77p for 24 biscuits. Next price point is 1.75 for the Tesco brand. I refuse to buy the Weetabix brand.

If you have a Herons near you the Heinz mayo is around a third of the price it is in Tesco.

I'm the opposite and prefer to taste the egg but don't feel you can in cheap brands. Helmand for me - although it's not as good as it used to be. Ketchup can be any brand though, same with beans. I actually prefer own brands as less sweet. Green giant sweetcorn is far superior though than any own brand. Own brands are always a bit hard and chewy

Have you tried frozen sweetcorn, @liveforsummer? I agree with you about tinned but frozen is a price & taste game changer.

liveforsummer · 04/02/2023 23:43

@CantFindTheBeat frozen is definitely better however I don't have a freezer so not an option sadly

CantFindTheBeat · 04/02/2023 23:44

Ah, that does put paid to that then 🥲

We swapped to Aldi own brands, for most things, way before the cost of living crisis. DH always vowed he’d never eat anything other than Kellogg’s cornflakes but he quite happily eats Aldi ones. Tbf he didn’t realise he was doing so for months because I always decant them into a Tupperware so he thought he was still on the Kellogg’s ones.

I actually went onto a name brand. I have always had Tesco own ketchup. Tasted fine and was cheaper. Then they changed the bottle or the ingredients. It was awful. That ketchup started flying out. It would go everywhere. All over peoples clothes , worktop and tiles. It was the final straw when one day it went to the other side of the table. I had enough of clearing up after every meal.

I don’t know what they changed. But when my very not observant 18 year old son kept complaining about it. I gave up and changed over.

I feel your pain we have had this. Now unscrew the lid as it was flying everywhere in all Directions.

Now happily use Aldi mayo, salad cream, brown sauce, Worcestershire sauce, gravy granules. The only thing I can’t switch is ketchup. Tried, but didn’t like and am sticking with Heinz.

The cost of baked beans (Heinz) is crazy. I bought one tin of M&S today at a third of the price if Heinz. Am hoping that they pass the taste test!

Anyone with Brabantia bins - Aldi do bin bags at a much lower price. Yes, they are thinner than the original, but they do the job - I begrudge paying daft money for bin bags.

Whatever shop I’m in, I will always buy own-brand Ibuprofen - no way I’m forking out for Nurofen!

I regularly buy Asdas just essential range but do prefer aldi for being cheaper. I tend to always go for the basic ranges now, even squash and toilet roll. Due to the inflation of food shopping I really have no choice, however many things I’ve found to be good. If I need a certain branded item I check out farm foods or herons and have found popping up to those shops so much cheaper than supermarkets. They do lots of offers, some short dated but great for when the school holidays are on.

FenghuangHoyan · 10/02/2023 05:37

I buy own brand and have for years. That polish mayo is now my partner's favourite, they say it's gorgeous.

Never had an issue with own brand and that includes the discount supermarkets.

Flymetothetoon · 10/02/2023 07:04

I will happily buy own brand goods but never coffee - always has to be Nescafé Gold Blend.

Favouritefruits · 10/02/2023 18:46

I’ve switched to own brand supermarket items for everything but I really don’t like any other cereal other than Kellogg’s it’s all so thick and less crisp.

I switched to own brands long before the cost if living crisis for most things. I have no where to go down.

Me too

Unicorn34 · 10/02/2023 19:12

Lidl (Bramwells) cream of tomato soup is a teeny bit sweeter than Heinz but pretty much the same for 1/3 of the price - and this comes from someone who had to force themselves to try it!

Qqbank01 · 10/02/2023 23:29

I am buying from Lidl/Aldi for a long time, i am just focus on the price not brand
