Swapped to own brands?

Has the cost of living caused you to try to make cuts in your shopping? I can't believe the prices of things rising! Week on week alone! It's getting ridiculous! I've tried to swap to own brand things now! I love Heinz Mayo! But for £4.10 I just can't justify it! So tesco own Brand it now is. Any one recommend an own brand that fast like Heinz? 🤞

Mayo is the one sauce i won't go own brand, i hate when you can taste the egg, which i can in every own brand i've ever tried. I don't even really like helmans, has to be heinz. I buy it from b and m or home bargains unless its on sale in asda or tesco.

kitcat15 · 02/02/2023 20:28

The Lidl mayo is proper yummy 😋

toastofthetown · 02/02/2023 20:34

I'm not brand loyal for many things, but Stokes mayonnaise is one of them. All the ingredient are things I have in my kitchen which is something which is important to me. I don't eat that much mayonnaise though. But I'm a longterm Lidl shopper so not hugely brand focussed anyway. Happy to eat Lidl beans, cheeses, rice etc.

liveforsummer · 02/02/2023 20:36

I'm the opposite and prefer to taste the egg but don't feel you can in cheap brands. Helmand for me - although it's not as good as it used to be. Ketchup can be any brand though, same with beans. I actually prefer own brands as less sweet. Green giant sweetcorn is far superior though than any own brand. Own brands are always a bit hard and chewy

Starlightstarbright1 · 02/02/2023 20:36

I switched to own brands long before the cost if living crisis for most things. I have no where to go down.

evtheria · 02/02/2023 20:39

The polish mayo seems to be popular on MN (can't vouch for it myself as I detest mayo) but today I saw enormous 800ml tall-looking bottles of Heinz mayo in B&M for 'cheap'. There were only 2 left on shelf so I think it must have been a good deal.

About 85% of our food shop was already own brand, half regular and half value. I've got only a little room to maneuver with the shopping in that regards.

plumduck · 02/02/2023 20:40

Lidl

whoruntheworldgirls · 02/02/2023 20:43

Fine with most own brands but i only eat Kellogg's cornflakes.
Salad cream i like Asda own brand.
Love Aldi's specially select curry sauces
Aldi specially select salted butter

MattDamon · 02/02/2023 20:56

Lidl is the only cheap brand I like. Worth stocking up on.

AlphaAlpha · 02/02/2023 21:06

Winiary Mayo - found in the world foods/polish aisle - is 100% better than helmans.

Madamecastafiore · 02/02/2023 21:13

M&S tomato ketchup, brown sauce and salad cream are all cheaper and far nicer than Heinz and British made. Can't attest for the mayo as don't eat it but DS dies and says it's good.

PenguinsandHippos · 02/02/2023 21:20

I always bought a lot of own brands anyway, but I’ve noticed there seem to be less and less of them available in the shops near to me.

Where the own brand / basic product is available, it now costs as much as the branded item used to. There’s a few things I’ve stopped buying altogether, including sauce.

Agreed. Asda has very good ketchup. I can't afford Heinz when husband goes to the fridge every now and then and squeezes ketchup straight to his mouth 😂

"The polish mayo seems to be popular on MN ."

I think it's Winiary mayo? It's very good, I agree. My favourite when I lived in Poland.

Probablymagrat · 03/02/2023 12:46

I've always been own brand. The only way down for me is the best value ranges. Some things are OK, they tend to be a bit watery, but not vile.

Rebel2023 · 03/02/2023 12:48

As someone else said b&m often have Heinz mayo cheap
I use Aldi own brand and it's fine

Abeachsomewhere · 03/02/2023 13:00

M&S mayo is sooo nice, especially the garlic one 😋 We use a lot of own brands and did even before the price rises.

ifonly4 · 03/02/2023 15:01

I've purchased many of Tescos own brand goods for years, it's just what we're used to. I hadn't been able to buy their own salad dressing, so purchased some from Lidl - happened to be cheaper and perfectly acceptable. It was reported a few days ago and there's been a noticeable change in people purchasing own brands.

I tend to do my shopping on foot, so can't buy too much at a time, so I'm trying to monitor prices just before leaving and get whatever is cheaper from either Tesco or Lidl now.

Polarbearyfairy · 03/02/2023 16:04

I've never really bought brands either, I choose the overall quality of my supermarket instead - so most things I'll get Waitrose own brand but I also love some of Aldi's products so split my shop between them. I think toilet roll is the only big brand item I buy every time, only Andrex will do for our bums!

twinkletwinkle89 · 04/02/2023 00:34

I found the big Heinz Mayo in Morrisons today for £3! Yes. I've never really bought brands as such but Heinz Mayo was the one brand I always bought! As yes, other mayo's have a Tangy sour taste to me?

I actually went onto a name brand. I have always had Tesco own ketchup. Tasted fine and was cheaper. Then they changed the bottle or the ingredients. It was awful. That ketchup started flying out. It would go everywhere. All over peoples clothes , worktop and tiles. It was the final straw when one day it went to the other side of the table. I had enough of clearing up after every meal.

I don’t know what they changed. But when my very not observant 18 year old son kept complaining about it. I gave up and changed over.

IhearyouClemFandango · 04/02/2023 07:23

The only non branded mayo I like is Aldi actually

Bellalalala · 04/02/2023 07:26

I shop at Aldi. There’s a couple of bits I don’t like from there, but I get them at b&m as it’s cheaper than Asda (the only alternative at the moment where I am).

I don’t like aldis beans. No one in the house likes the instant noodles or the ketchup and mayonnaise. Ds doesn’t like Aldi pot noodles. He takes one to rugby every week when it’s cold so I get him the branded one.

A Lidl is opening soon so will try there. I am to go non branded on things if we like them.

CherryogDog · 04/02/2023 07:27

Ditto PP the Polish mayo from Lidl is lovely.
Haven't been to Asda for a while but they had 4 packs of baked beans for £1, just as good as Heinz or Branstons, packed full of beans, not like some own brands with more sauce than beans.

liveforsummer · 04/02/2023 07:29

Ooh I'd wondered about the polish brands actually as spotted a garlic mayo and the Heinz and Asda brand garlic are awful

autienotnaughty · 04/02/2023 07:31

We now shop at Aldi so I don't even recognise most of the brands
