Energy prices going up again in January - FFS

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 14/12/2022 20:37

Just had a letter from my energy company telling me that my price will go up again in January.

I've done some research and apparently "most households" won't see a difference due to the price cap, but my unit cost is going up by 2p a unit.

I'm not choosing between heating and eating but equally I was not expecting this and many others won't be either as there has been almost no publicity.

So frustrating, we've been so frugal so far and can't really cut back further ☹️

That's correct but Ofgem are changing the price of units from 1st January.

Blimey, why do they make it so confusing?

i'm on a fixed rate till March, is that affected as well, does anyone know? Thanks.

Im one of the customers who received the email today from octopus about economy 7 going up 8% on January 1st. Normally I'm very money savvy, switching, fixing to get the best deals etc to protect myself from future rises. However, I'm devastated by this. It seems to have come from nowhere with only 2 weeks notice. It's unfair that not everyone is having this rise, and I can't do anything about it. I am in a flat with storage heaters, which are already expensive, but have no gas so I'm stuck with it. I have a baby at home so can't even turn the heating off. I'm fuming this is happening - anyone else?

I agree absolutely shit.

We were told prices were fixed to April but that was a lie and those facing the biggest hike van least afford it. Utterly shitty and I am raging.

Why is standing charge a thing?

userxx · 17/12/2022 07:54

@EmmaAgain22 They like to confuse us! You'll be fine until your fixed finishes.

Thanks, what I'm thinking is they have handled this so oddly, fixed might not really mean fixed. It's dreadful. A very sensible lady I work with, about 60, said she's decided they are doing it on purpose to target elderly. Her parents are barely switching the lights on, they are in their 90s and she's really quite scared.

Gutted by this, our economy 7 day rate is going from 41.928p to 45.959p an increase of 9.61% from 1st Jan. The night rate is staying the same.

Martin Lewis is collecting data on this, if you haven't already please post your price increase on his Facebook post about this.

Your energy prices will go up on 1 January.
The energy price cap is reviewed every three months and Ofgem recently announced that due to rising costs it will go up in January. The government will increase the Energy Price Guarantee (EPG) discount to offset the price cap rise and keep average household bills at around £2,500 a year.
However, whilst the typical bill amount is the same, some people’s prices will increase. This is because Ofgem’s price cap calculations take into account changes in the costs to provide energy to customers in different regions of Britain and by different payment methods, while the EPG discount is the same for all customers.
You can see your old and new prices over the page, and how much this will change your annual cost (based on the consumption details we have). Remember, the EPG is not a cap on your total bill - what you pay will depend on how much energy you use.
If you pay by Direct Debit the price you'll pay will be lower than if you don't, so it may be a good idea to set one up if you haven't already. It's easy to do in your online account. Don't have one? Visit eonnext.com/register to set one up if we already have your email address, or if not, email [email protected] with your name, address and account number so we can get you set up.
If you have a smart meter, you don’t need to give us a meter reading as we’ll get one automatically. If you don’t, and want to take a reading on 1 January, you can send it to us up to five days later – it doesn’t have to be on the day. The easiest way is online or by WhatsApp on 0808 501 5200.

Yes I had an email from Eon next. My increase is going to be £3.76 a year for electric but I'm pretty sure that it will be going up again after January.

It's all gone mad to be honest! I switched using this site here utility warehouse came out the cheapest but only if I bundled my Bill's together so I also took out a sim card and insurance. I don't know if prices will ever go down, just like fuel prices, once they go up they just become the new normal.

Echo40 · 17/01/2023 07:33

I really hate to break it to people but much better to be honest rather than media already telling us it's going to fall.

Some facts on what's happened.
What's going to happen shirt term
What could impact next winter.

Truss acts like shes God ups oct cap from £1900 to £2500.
Says we so lucky even though its gone up £600,.

Misleads people into thinking £2500 is totally annual bill doesn't explain average use is based on 2 adults 2 small kids in a 2 bed house our 3 bed house is already over 3k now and the cap is currently £2500.
She pledges to support people with energy for 2 years.
Crashed the economy we then told all support ends this April and any continued support be targeted maybe linked benefits and pensions my guess don't know for sure .
Also April cap goes upto £3000 so substantial amount people be paying over 3k a year energy its tricky estimate a year if price changed every quarter
This is recent was twice a year

The £3000 cap is fixed at 1 year
So April 2023 to April 2024.

Theres a lag In prices going up and down as news is saying wholesale gas prices down pre war levels and hold tight.
We only got 4%, Russian gas before the war yet we have highest energy bills in Europe.
We rely a lot on Norway and eu for gas and electricity in the UK.
We get some electricity from France and Belgium so our crazy mps are anti eu they seem to forget we integrate within EU energy market.

Gas storage every other EU country has more.
Again liz truss reduced centrica gas storage which meant we couldn't buy cheaper in summer and store/ stockpile we were buying it in autumn/ winter when prices were higher as demand falls in summer anyway.
Lots eu countries filled current storage with Russian gas before was cut off.
Many eu countries had campaigns since summer reduce energy use.

If EU has bad winter and runs down storage then there lot more demand and competition next winter for Norwegian energy which could push price up.

Martin Lewis explains it better than me.

It could go down to £2700 or £2800 in July but that's still more than current cap but less than April £3000.
So we still keep paying more.
Then it's reviewed again in Oct so could go up again.

He said dependent on EU weather.

Seriously thinking getting a multi fuel burner for next winter.
As from April we won't get £66 month help and cap increase from £2500 to £3000.

BlackForestCake · 17/01/2023 08:24

Just when did it become socially acceptable to profit from war (increase in energy prices) or sickness (massive increase in the cost of antibiotics?)

It's always been “acceptable” in that there was nothing we could do about it.

There’s always been profiteering in war.

Do you remember the cartoon Annie? The billionaire Daddy Warbucks? Where do you think the name "war bucks" comes from?

Or Stanley Baldwin in 1919 describing the House of Commons as “hard-faced men who looked as if they had done very well out of the war”.
