Energy prices going up again in January - FFS

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 14/12/2022 20:37

Just had a letter from my energy company telling me that my price will go up again in January.

I've done some research and apparently "most households" won't see a difference due to the price cap, but my unit cost is going up by 2p a unit.

I'm not choosing between heating and eating but equally I was not expecting this and many others won't be either as there has been almost no publicity.

So frustrating, we've been so frugal so far and can't really cut back further ☹️

I think we'll be OK until April when we're likely to see a more substantial increase - I keep hearing + 20%.

I could cut back more, but I can afford not to. Heating on for three hours a day, no tumble drying ... roll on summer.

EdHelpPls · 14/12/2022 20:51

Hmm, I got an email today (NI) that said the price guarantee was adjusting in January. I wonder if it's the same for you,? It'll be about a 6p difference for us.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 14/12/2022 22:11

Yes it is being adjusted, really cross that those of us without dual fuel are being shafted again with further increases.

They still haven't said how/when we get the support for "alternative fuels"

Some are increasing very slightly but each energy company are doing nothing. I read a Martin Lewis article before and for example my energy company ovo said they wouldn’t be passing the slight increase on To DD customers.

It will vary company to company and also by how you pay: DD monthly, by a regular bill or pre payment, possibly regionally too.

The energy price guarantee is lifting 20% in April, yes.
Next winter is going to be awful 😑

I have had a letter today confirming the increase for me. Day rate goes up to £0.44515 in January

Shell have written to me to tell me that my electricity rates are changing from 34.226p to 34.278p per kWh, from January 2023.

My electricity standing charge per day will remain the same. Gas rates remains the same.

Jojoanna · 15/12/2022 10:15

I have received an email to confirm my electricity rate is increasing .

Qqbank01 · 15/12/2022 12:28

Utility warehouse also sending me a my electricity rate is increasing 0.147p, but no change to gas

CeeJay81 · 15/12/2022 13:01

Just had the email from eon. It's a very small increase. Saying we will pay an extra £17 a year in electric and 1p a year gas(based on our current predicted usage).

CeeJay81 · 15/12/2022 13:03

£1 even not 1p I think. Its so small still though.

Babyroobs · 15/12/2022 17:45

We had one today to say Unit for electricity price was going down ( Bulb).

boys3 · 15/12/2022 21:54

electricity unit price very slight decrease here - SO energy

33.01p to 31st Dec and 32.80p from 1st Jan; both inclusive of vat

These changes are driven by ‘line loss factors' - essentially the cost of delivering electricity from power stations to homes in different parts of the country at different times of the day. Changes in line loss factors have impacted the Ofgem price cap, which has impacted the Energy Price Guarantee.

Just when did it become socially acceptable to profit from wa r (increase in energy prices) or sickness (massive increase in the cost of antibiotics?) Cos I missed that bit? During the second war in Europe, these people were derided as spivs. Now, well, they are business people ( my arse, they are exploiters of misery and death).

Only until the price cap goes up.

woodhill · 15/12/2022 22:32

I thought the energy cap was in place till April?

That's correct but Ofgem are changing the price of units from 1st January.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 16/12/2022 08:53

Martin Lewis has received reports that the energy companies are targeting E7 and E10 tariffs with higher rises (the price cap doesn't apply in the same way) and is asking anyone on these types of tariff to give him details of the price increases so that he can raise this.

My rate has increased by over 11% for heating. I'm not complaining about a quid here or there, this will completely wipe out the alternative fuel payment that we haven't even received yet!

So what’s the point of the energy ‘market’ now?

It has always been a sham market. The choice has only ever been which call centre you like better and what logo you get on your bill. The product has always been the same and offgem control the prices.

We'd be better off nationalised so we aren't subsidising badly run companies going bust, private profits, and multiple call centres and billing systems.

Is that economy 7 etc

Offgem have a cheek. They are not looking out for the customer. They have raised prices enough lately

Yes Economy 7 Economy 10 and other time of use tariffs such as heatwise, warmwise, total heat total comfort.

All the ones aimed at people who heat with electricity too.

Im one of the customers who received the email today from octopus about economy 7 going up 8% on January 1st. Normally I'm very money savvy, switching, fixing to get the best deals etc to protect myself from future rises. However, I'm devastated by this. It seems to have come from nowhere with only 2 weeks notice. It's unfair that not everyone is having this rise, and I can't do anything about it. I am in a flat with storage heaters, which are already expensive, but have no gas so I'm stuck with it. I have a baby at home so can't even turn the heating off. I'm fuming this is happening - anyone else?

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 16/12/2022 22:45

I’m with M&S energy which is run by Octopus. I’m not on Economy 7 just the normal rate and have been notified that is going up from January.
