How to encourage quicker showers with teens

Our hot water is on for 30 minutes a day. I shower daily, dc every other day. It can be a battle to get teen Dd in the shower but when she dies she uses all the hot water and as we don't have a combi boiler, once it's gone it's gone. I shower ds as he's not able to do it himself (properly) so he's quick. I'm as quick as I can be. Dd will spend as long as she can in there until the water starts cooling. Our gas costs have doubled and therefore I don't want to put the water on for longer each day or have to boost it.
What will make her speed up?

Timer and pay her for shorter ones?

Whatafielddayfortheheat · 05/11/2022 16:45

Put it on for 15 minutes for her shower, then 15 minutes at a separate time for you/DS

Scrambledeggsontoasted · 05/11/2022 16:47

Make DD go in last after everyone else has been in and you've run a sink for the washing up.

DietCokeDelight · 05/11/2022 16:49

Give her a choice- either she sticks to a 5 minute limit or she goes last.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 05/11/2022 16:49

She goes in last and watch an environmental programme and bring up how she needs to do her bit for the planet.

FuckabethFuckor · 05/11/2022 16:51

What does she say when you explain what you've explained here? If you haven't already, surely a cards-on-the-table conversation is the first angle of approach.

user1494050295 · 05/11/2022 16:56

Turn kitchen tap on if this is an option

MrsCarson · 05/11/2022 17:17

Good luck. I'm on my third teen and still haven't figured out how to get them to cut it shorter. I've talked till I'm blue in the face, turned on taps, flushed the downstairs loo, you name it, nothing has worked, we have a combi boiler so it doesn't run out.
I think the best idea on here is make her go last, so there's less hot water

Meltingsocks · 05/11/2022 17:39

Bluetooth speaker in bathroom, set her a two song limit- works here!

sheepdogdelight · 05/11/2022 17:41

If she's not keen on showers in the first place, maybe suggest a basin of hot water and a flannel instead?

JudithHarper · 05/11/2022 17:43

Tell them that for every minute after 10 minutes will result in wifi being turned off for 5 minutes.

And stick to it.

KangarooKenny · 05/11/2022 18:08

An egg timer

isthismylifenow · 05/11/2022 18:14

Is she washing her hair, then conditioning etc at every shower? Perhaps she is letting the water run waiting for the conditioner.

If so she can turn the water off wash herself while it's conditioning, then turn back in to rinse.

How old is she?

BarbaraofSeville · 05/11/2022 21:24

Environmental angle?

Aren't all 'young people' worried about the planet?

AdoraBell · 05/11/2022 21:29

show her the bill and say it’s either shorter shower or no food (her choice of food) . She can choose a song on her phone for 3/4/5 minutes and stop the shower when the song ends.

AlwaysLatte · 05/11/2022 21:34

My two are pretty good, only about 4/5 mins each but the shower is very powerful so doesn't need much. The oldest is into fitness and health and likes to have his showers mostly cold! 🥶

LizzieSiddal · 05/11/2022 21:34

Make her go last.

Darbs76 · 06/11/2022 10:30

By telling her it’s 5 mins max - totally selfish to use up all the hot water. Or she showers last, see how long she lasts with no hot water

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/11/2022 10:46

As others said she goes last and is isn’t quick she gets a cold shower

no need to spend a long time in there. Quick shower and wash hair and get out

XAQ · 06/11/2022 10:46

I turn the hot water off after 5 minutes.

primeoflife · 06/11/2022 10:49

chyra · 05/11/2022 16:44

Timer and pay her for shorter ones?

Or charge her for longer ones!

bloodyeverlastinghell · 06/11/2022 10:53

I take them swimming. We all stand in a row having an excessively long shower 3 times a week. Quick showers at home (no hair washing)

Meltingsocks · 06/11/2022 11:44

@bloodyeverlastinghell

Surely you're joking! What about others waiting?

bloodyeverlastinghell · 06/11/2022 11:53

i wouldn’t do it if others were waiting 😂Pool is in a school and is set up with ten showers. It’s rare there’s that many in the pool unless it’s a floats session tbh

AlternativelyWired · 06/11/2022 12:14

I take ds to his once a week swimming lesson and have started washing and drying his hair there instead of waiting until we get home. He has long hair that takes quite done time to dry. The hairdryers are free and we use the little out of the way section of the changing room where there's rarely anyone else.

Dd has said she will try with the shower but I've told her she will cut them shorter. She shampoos twice and has very long hair so to rinse it all out takes ages. She argues that washing it everyday isn't good for it but she's a teenager with slightly greasy hair and if she washed it daily it wouldn't get greasy and she'd only have to shampoo it once. Try telling her that though!
