How to encourage quicker showers with teens

Our hot water is on for 30 minutes a day. I shower daily, dc every other day. It can be a battle to get teen Dd in the shower but when she dies she uses all the hot water and as we don't have a combi boiler, once it's gone it's gone. I shower ds as he's not able to do it himself (properly) so he's quick. I'm as quick as I can be. Dd will spend as long as she can in there until the water starts cooling. Our gas costs have doubled and therefore I don't want to put the water on for longer each day or have to boost it.
What will make her speed up?

Encourage a routine of having warm place & clothes all ready for getting out.

Let her have longer showers if showering less - 7x5min showers pwk = 1x35min shower pwk and work around when that 1 shower will be.

Actually I do sympathise with your DD – having long hair does take a really long time to rinse all the shampoo/conditioner out.
But I don’t understand why she needs to shampoo it twice… Has she fallen for the marketing line on the shampoo bottle “… And repeat “ ?

We all have long hair. Mine is as long as hers but I wash it every day. I don't spend ages in there. Probably not even 10 minutes.

I’m assuming you’re already using the strategy of making her go last?
(obvious common sense)

As a teen I was known to be a bit of a ‘daydreamer’, and did everything slowly… is your DD a bit like that? Maybe she has no sense of urgency and is just enjoying the sensation of hot water etc..? So showering is a combination of an unavoidably time-consuming job AND the pleasure of a shower

Have you tried suggesting she washes her hair separately to showering? Ie/ stay dressed, unhook the shower head and bending over the bath. So washing her hair is a ‘chore’ and the shower is totally different thing (and wear a shower cap to avoid getting hair wet on non-wash days)
If you only have a shower, and not a bath, you can get plastic hoses to push onto taps - might be worth a try?

She goes last?

That said I have the hot water water on for 2 hours (hour morning and evening), 4 or 5, 6, possibly 7 even at times and I don't want to run out for hand washing, washing up etc either. Never have run out even with 6 adults, the 7 is for new year and first time.

She goes last is the obvious answer also washing your hair everyday isn’t good for it and strips it if much needed natural oils it can lead to it looking greasy when it’s just trying to combat all the cleaning chemicals.

I agree she shouldn't be washing her hair everyday!!

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/11/2022 17:54

Dry shampoo is good

a few squirts and my hair looks fab

I take ds to his once a week swimming lesson and have started washing and drying his hair there instead of waiting until we get home. He has long hair that takes quite done time to dry. The hairdryers are free and we use the little out of the way section of the changing room where there's rarely anyone else.

Dd has said she will try with the shower but I've told her she will cut them shorter. She shampoos twice and has very long hair so to rinse it all out takes ages. She argues that washing it everyday isn't good for it but she's a teenager with slightly greasy hair and if she washed it daily it wouldn't get greasy and she'd only have to shampoo it once. Try telling her that though!

But you said your DC only shower every other day ??

bigbluebus · 06/11/2022 17:59

Can she turn the shower off whilst she shampoos and then turn it on again to rinse then off whilst she repeats rather than just letting it run?

I've been on canal boat holidays were the issue is not so much running out of hot water (it heats whilst the boat engine is running) but there is a risk of running out of water supply for all purposes - and possibly not being near a water point to refill. It certainly focuses the mind on water usage.

I bang on the door! I think they zone out!

do you have a smart meter for your water? I’ve found showing them & talking to them about how much we were using helped a bit.

jtaeapa · 06/11/2022 22:58

Have your shower first so that she can use the rest of the water and then stop when it's gone.
