£419 per month gas&elec….. around about right?

BlueBunny23 · 27/10/2022 23:50

So I have a 5bed detached house…… lived here 6 years, gas and electric was £120 a month, went up to £270, now they want £419 as that’s now my usage apparently. I must invest in a smart metre very fast as I don’t think I could be using this amount of gas or electricity!! Does this sound about right for the price increases or waaaaay off?

OP posts:

Can you look back at last year's bills to see how many units you were using then, then you can just times it by the pence per unit and add the standing charge to see whether it looks right or not.

oviraptor21 · 27/10/2022 23:55

Small modern 5 bed - no.
Large Victorian, high ceilings, draughty windows - quite likely.

kitcat15 · 27/10/2022 23:56

Why are you asking random people on MN ?🤷‍♀️.. we know nothing about your usage ....is this just a stealth boast about your 5 bed detached house? 🙄

AriettyHomily · 27/10/2022 23:58

We've fixes at 249 for a 3 bed Victorian terrace. How big is your house and what's your usage?

Quveas · 28/10/2022 00:04

Large Victorian, high ceilings, draughty windows - quite likely.

£94 per month! And I am neither miserly nor profligate - I use what I want and need.

AuntieMarys · 28/10/2022 00:14

Do you not send readings in each month?

Velvetbee · 28/10/2022 00:19

Seems steep. 4 bed here, 2 adults at home most of the week, 1 teen at college, 1 home educated teen - £179 a month.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 28/10/2022 00:35

OP the only way forward is to get the smart meters and that way you will be able to see what you are using. I’m paying £121 per month from £207 I used to pay after they reviewed my account and realised that I was actually paying a lot and use little gas and electric. It’s a 4 large detached house with 1 adult and 4 children

SueGeneris · 28/10/2022 00:41

Ours is now 470 for 5 bed Victorian semi. Ouch. Started like you 6 years ago around £120. Our supplier went bust and we were transferred to Shell so we’re not on a fixed rate.

Pixiedust1234 · 28/10/2022 00:42

Are you actually using that amount or is it estimated?

BarbaraofSeville · 28/10/2022 07:03

If those are your direct debit amounts, no-one can say.

You need to work out the annual cost of your usage, factor in the £400 and how your supplier is giving you this.

Also check for any credit or debit on your account and whether your bills are based on true readings or estimates.

Without that information the numbers you have quoted could be fairly meaningless.

StillNotWarm · 28/10/2022 07:21

Can you find a bill that has your annual usage on? And calculate through with the current prices?

We were on a historical fix, but moved house. I reckoned prices had gone up 2.5 times. So, your 120 would be about 300 now.
That makes the current quote look quite high - unless you have been collecting debt on the account.

They want to up my payment, yet I’m two months worth in credit, so they can get lost.

KangarooKenny · 28/10/2022 07:24

And I read my water/gas/electric every month now so they have an accurate record of my actual use.

custardbear · 28/10/2022 07:25

5 bed detached too (rebuild so modern and up to date with insulation) £279 pcm
They had quoted us just over £6k pa so I called and asked so they checked it and said no that's too high and reduced

It’s a forum people can post what they like! Sick of people like this on every thread I read atm
Dont read it if you aren’t interested.

Withnoshoes · 28/10/2022 07:30

@BlueBunny23 look at your actual usage not the DD the company wants you to pay. How much was your last months bill? You can opt just to pay the bills as you receive them if you feel they are claiming too much monthly. There will be an element of increasing cost for winter usage too.

Els1e · 28/10/2022 07:56

4 bed here. Shared with elderly disabled mum who feels the cold, so heating is on more than I would choose. £186.00 per month. Yours does sound high. There are some good suggestions on threads in the money section.

TrufflesForBreakfast · 28/10/2022 08:08

We live in a five bed Georgian house (the fifth bedroom is actually a separate outbuilding with bathroom, so hardly a box room joined to the rest of the house), and we have an Aga. Family of four, each shower daily. Our smart meter is telling me that we're spending on average £11 per day for both gas and electricity. So £340 pcm, roughly. Then of course there's the £66 pcm off over the winter.

Admittedly we haven't turned the heating on yet - no need to thanks to the Aga and the fact it's so mild this year, so it will go up further when it gets cold. But we don't turn the heating in that much anyway as we've always been quite cautious with it. It does sound like a lot for you - I really would recommend a smart meter as you only pay for what you use.

TrufflesForBreakfast · 28/10/2022 08:10

And sorry if that sounded bragging (referring to a previous post), I'm just trying to be as factual as possible.

BeyondMyWits · 28/10/2022 08:21

AuntieMarys · 28/10/2022 00:14

Not all energy companies work like that any more.

We are billed twice a year. I'm guessing they are trying to get people to switch to smart meters.

Chippy or what ???!! Rude. Just rude.

SmokedHaddockChowder · 28/10/2022 08:36

Jeez that's high. We're in a spacious 80s-built 4-bed detached. We pay a direct debit of £160 a month, but only use £100-worth currently, so are building up credit.
That's with both of us working from home and DH never fully switches off his massive computer station - it's on 24/7.

Wowzel · 28/10/2022 08:37

We live in a large 4 bed and our predicted for October is 375 so far for gas and electricity on the smart meter

stairgates · 28/10/2022 08:40

Seems expensive. Can you adjust what your paying online and keep an eye on it? They wanted ours at 350 but I went with 280, 6 bed semi, I am intending to reduce our use slot do am confident we will stay in credit.
