So I have a 5bed detached house…… lived here 6 years, gas and electric was £120 a month, went up to £270, now they want £419 as that’s now my usage apparently. I must invest in a smart metre very fast as I don’t think I could be using this amount of gas or electricity!! Does this sound about right for the price increases or waaaaay off?

Another day another energy thread where the OP gives their direct debit but not their usage.

How on earth are a bunch of strangers going to know if the direct debit is right when the OP can't be arsed to check?

@TimeForMeToF1y indeed and it's a shame more people receiving cheap utilities for several years didn't see it coming and are now complaining bitterly when charges represent the right cost. We had it good for a long time. There was only one way things were going to go and that was up. Food, fuel, interest rates, labour. It started with tax credits. The piper was eventually going to call.

All this thread shows is that there is no standard amount to pay.
We as a family paid £300 a month years ago because we weren’t on a fixed tariff and had old incandescent lightbulbs. Thank goodness for LEDs.
Now with more mindful usage it’s not much more. Have a gas range which is expensive and a new boiler. Actual usage for October is 1200kwh for gas and 180kwh for electricity.

Our home is a classic 1920s detached so not very energy efficient. We are now paying £385pm and have a smart meter so that's on actual readings. We have had the heating on a bit but not as much as usual.
