Evening all,

I'm not sure this is the right thread for this.
But how much does everyone renting a 3 bed council house pay for rent?
I'll be applying on Monday as I need to put in the application so we can move, can't afford that size house on private rent and have 3 kids. Just trying to work out what sort of money I need tu save for first months rent so I can leave my partner.

How much are you all paying for a 3 bed council house? Thanks.

It will really vary across the country.
We are Lancashire and it's £127 a week.

HighlandPony · 15/10/2022 18:38

My sisters is £270 something a fortnight

PeskyRooks · 15/10/2022 19:44

Wiltshire £115 a week.

I'm very rural though it's more if you are in the middle of town.

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 15/10/2022 19:49

You might be on the list for some time so rents will have probably shot up by the time you get allocated a place!

reddA · 15/10/2022 19:50

£144.50 per week HA in Lancashire - not far off private rental tbf, you don't always need a months rent though, I think mine was 2 weeks

lannistunut · 15/10/2022 19:54

How long is your local waiting list? - most people wait years.

CeeJay81 · 15/10/2022 20:24

Powys, £456 a month, the price shows on the letters as per week but we pay it per month.

Tilly95 · 15/10/2022 20:26

Does it seem right that grandparents are not invited to their granddaughters wedding. The granddaughter has lost her father so therefore he ( the grandad) is her father's father. He is very hurt and upset about this situation. He understands costs need to be considered but he was invited to her twin sister's wedding. He was notified by text inviting him to a party sometime after the wedding. The people invited to the wedding are siblings, parents and children.

Also check the banding.

If you're living with your partner you won't be a very high band as you have secure housing.

As awful as it is if you are in danger you may have to leave with your kids and become homeless to be able to get onto the list for being housed rather than just the list itself (the lowest bands can be 10-15 years wait for those who are secure housing and just wanting an affordable home iyswim?)

If you are in danger or being abused I would suggest calling woman's aid for support.

If it's about leaving your DP because it's not working try calling shelter who can advise you.

It's different all around the country. I'm in a large 3 bed and it's £368 a month. That's £85 a week I believe. SW Scotland.

CandyFloss35 · 15/10/2022 20:38

£570 a month (that includes a £30 service charge for estate upkeep.) It’s a large 3 bed town house with two en-suites and a family bathroom. The master bedroom has a walk in wardrobe and dressing room, we are very very lucky to have such a lovely home in a nice new build estate. We waited 10 years on the list and was no. 31 on the bidding for this house but luckily we were the first bidders to meet the employment and income criteria they stipulated for this house. We are in Shropshire

Moomoo2o22 · 15/10/2022 20:45

Between £83 and £93 p/w in Nottinghamshire but as prev posters have said waiting times are long in most parts of the country and waiting years is not uncommon unfortunately.

shinynewapple22 · 15/10/2022 20:57

@Tilly95 I think you've posted on the wrong thread .

shinynewapple22 · 15/10/2022 21:01

More importantly than the price of the rent is likely to be the length of the waiting list . City where I work you would be waiting years . If you are homeless they will provide you with bed and breakfast accommodation and then temporary council housing but the temporary housing wouldn't be a 3 bed house.

If you are leaving an abusive relationship then you could get extra support which may put you nearer the top of the list .

Having said all that - it may be very different where you live .

£690 pcm for a 3 bed new build in the North West.
I don't know any other HA tenant paying this much Shock

Yabado · 15/10/2022 21:19

I pay £740 pcm for a HA two bed flat! I'm down south though which I'm finding makes a difference.

itsgettingweird · 15/10/2022 21:39

Im down south in a HA flat (2 bed).

I pay £494 a month including service charge.

Wow, I'm being ripped off then!!

CornishTiger · 15/10/2022 21:41

What others pay is irrelevant. You need to look up local housing allowance for the areas you are interested in. The social housing rents will be set as that as a maximum. The other social rents about 2/3 of it in my experience.

itsgettingweird · 15/10/2022 21:43

I guess it depends where down south?

Mine is £494 and average cost on private rental market for a 2 bed flat is £850/900 and 2 bed house £1250/1300.

That's before the constant agency fees and deposits and having to move and contract fees etc.

I'm extremely lucky. I've lived here 15 years and it's a new build. The difference between HA and private market has increased drastically since I've been here.

It's a suburban town with good facilities and transport links hence why houses and rentals are premium.

Yaissa · 15/10/2022 21:45

My 3 bed is £90 a week

Tilly95 · 15/10/2022 22:06

Thank you. You probably realise I am new to this and I have no idea if I can transfer my post to where it should be.
