Evening all,

I'm not sure this is the right thread for this.
But how much does everyone renting a 3 bed council house pay for rent?
I'll be applying on Monday as I need to put in the application so we can move, can't afford that size house on private rent and have 3 kids. Just trying to work out what sort of money I need tu save for first months rent so I can leave my partner.

How much are you all paying for a 3 bed council house? Thanks.

They are around £560 per month I think. A few friends have 3 beds, same area as Me

Have to admit this thread has shocked me a bit as I know of quite a lot of people living in council housing who've been there decades and are working and could have afforded to move out a long time ago but obviously don't have to.
People are paying the same for a 2 or 3 bed house as students get charged for a tiny little study bedroom 😳
It's no wonder young people just can't get on their feet - everyone I know in a council house has been in it a long time, since back when they were much more available.
For this reason I just don't agree with lifetime tenancies - 10 years yes, but how will any council houses ever come free for young people who need them when people stop in them their whole life enjoying rents that are peanuts?!

young couples don’t get offered houses it’s one bed flats or bedsit/studios. It’s hard to get houses as pensioners don’t want to move out it’s their home. The problem lies with housing stock for families needing a house/maisonette.

Is there anywhere in the country that doesn't have ridiculously long waiting lists? My sister was told the wait would be 15years +

Sprogonthetyne · 26/10/2022 17:15

Look what the maximum amount of housing benefit / housing component of uc in your area. It will most likely be close to that.

KweenieBeanz · 26/10/2022 17:25

That's exactly my point, why do these pensioners feel they have more right to that home than a young couple hoping to start a family? It's not fair that for that older generation lots of nice spacious council housing was readily available at low rents, enabling them to start families and live a comfortable secure life, and now they have lovely triple locked pensions, free bus fares and TV licenses, while the generation just starting out are facing astronomical rents, low wages and poor wage growth, huge energy bills.....
I know not everything was great for that generation but right now it doesn't seem a fair deal does it.

KweenieBeanz · 26/10/2022 17:26

And the answer isn't just to build more council housing .... We wouldn't need to had the stock not been sold off at pennies - whose idea was that again?

It varies hugely, older council houses tend to be cheaper whereas newer builds more expensive and per area.

I know one family in a 1970s council housing paying £90 a week for a 3 bed, I know another family in a newer house paying £650 for a 2 bed - still cheaper than private rent in my area but still crazy really.

average 3 bed private rent here for a standard size home is about £1200 pcm!
