Lidl - what to buy

I’m moving to near a Lidl and I’m hoping to shop there to save some money on food. I’ll still also shop in Tesco or Sainsbury’s if required as I doubt Lidl has everything I need.

But I want to give it a go and see how much I can save!

So, can anyone recommend certain food or cleaning products from Lidl?

Almond magnums - Lidl do a copy cat version which are far nicer.

Full fat greek yoghurt

Their own chocolate with hazelnuts

Anything from the bakery basically!

Also have nice different cheeses and cooked meats in the themed weeks, eg Italian week, Spanish week etc.

Why don't you just make a regular shopping list and you'll find they have most of it apart from branded cleaning products etc.
I really like their version of berocca the b vitamin ones. Antipasti is great .
Their sourdough pizzas are sometimes raw in the middle though- Aldi are much better.

You must stick to list though, I end up spending more in there because everything is so cheap I just chuck it in 🙄

5% fat beef mince, im funny with mince but I've never ever had a fatty gristle bit or anything in the lidl one

Oooooo their jars of pasata

Formil washing powder £4 something for 65 washes. My washing machine doesn't smell like with some other cheap powders and its brilliant for stains

Olives, cheese (gorgonzola is very good) fruit & nut chocolate

I don't like the butter btw, just tasteless.

I bloody love lidl jam is very good, ooooooo and the jaffa cakes are devine

My advice would be check the dates on EVERYTHING before you buy, we have had far to many instances of food purchased from the shop when it was already out of date. I must be in the minority as haven't seen many other people with the same complaint but I can't tell you how much it has pissed me off at times! I must use a rubbish one...

The bakery sounds so good.

I like the thick bacon , coleslaw , chocolate and wine .
For me I can't get everything sometimes but the one near me is always quiet and it's easy to get in and out and get a good food shop .

I can tell you what NOT to buy:

Be really careful about buying loads of snacks and junk because it's so tempting! I always come out with more than what I needed (lovely breads, chocolate bars, snacks etc) so I don't really save money.

Their dairy, fish and meat are excellent value. As is loose fresh fruit and veg.

Quark, cottage cheese, peanutbutter, rye bread are particular bargains

They do pack of chopped gammon/ham sometimes too. It's the irregular bits that are too small for slices

Their Greek yogurt with honey is the best we've tried and only 75p, I buy six tubs at a time as they have good, long dates on them.

Deluxe whole chickens, actually any of their meat cooks well.

Frankfurter sausages! Lovely on the bbq.

Not sure I've ever bought anything duff to be honest. I've shopped there for a good ten years now. Just watch out for all the random crap impulse purchases from the middle aisles.

Oh, and yes to the bakery, my most recent discovery are the cinnamon buns.

I find LIDL/ALDI cheaper for home bits such as cleaners and loo roll. I love their deli items and they are better quality and cheaper than most supermarkets imo. But for the rest of the weekly shop, I don't find it cheaper than own brand tesco? I think the fruit and veg are terrible quality and for the most part, you have to buy them in wrapped in plastic which is probably the biggest reason I have stopped shopping there. Although to be fair, I probably save a huge amount as I can avoid the middle aisle of things I never knew I wanted/needed

I love Lidl OP! Avoid the "Middle at Lidl" aisle because if you're anything like me I pop in for my food shop and end up buying an Air Fryer or (last time) an activity gym for the cat!
Their household stuff is good and cheaper than Tesco/Sainsbo - washing up liquid, cleaning stuff, bleach. Their Orange and Bergamot hand wash is gorgeous! They've got big bottles of Astonish disinfectant for £2 - very similar to Zoflora for about a third of the price.
Olive oil - good and cheaper than elsewhere.
Chocolate, etc., all good - they do their own version of packs of mars bars, twix, at a fraction of the brand price.
I don't buy much fruit veg there because it goes off quickly - but for frozen, store cupboard and dairy they're great. Meat good too.

Goat cheese something in the bakery. Focaccia or word similar. V tasty.

Their steaks and meat is good quality. Their cheeses also good.
Don't find their frozen or fruit and veg great.. It seems to go off quickly. But I generally really like lidl. Their household cleaning stuff is good too!

Fresh fruit and veg is always really good, as is the bakery.

Their version of Oreo's are good, and the DC approve of the cereal too. The ketchup was a bit vinegary.

The only things that were deemed truly disgusting were the own brand pizzas (some goats cheese thing) and the muscles, which were so awful despite being in date I binned them. Not even the dog would touch them!

I really like Lidl

The W5 cleaning range is brilliant. Love the dishwasher tablets / own brand washing up liquid. The lavender and camomile washing powder smells lovely and comes in a massive box for about £5 and the fabric softener is good as well.
Really good bakery range and good fresh fish / meat / dairy. Good fresh produce as well. Thoroughly recommend them.

All household & cleaning products. Lidl is excellent for this stuff, and a fraction of the price of branded products.

Their Greek-style natural yogurt is the cheapest and best.

Own-brand chocolate is cheap & yummy, as are own-brand mini Magnums.

Their deluxe ground coffee range is very good, and often on half-price promotion. I always stock up.

Unlike Aldi, Lidl UK have retained some of their German heritage so they have a fantastic range of hams, sausages, bratwurst, cured meats etc etc.

Recent Lildl convert as we had one open near us. So much cheaper to do a full shop and the kids seem happy with it.

• bakery is amazing, especially the feta & pesto flatbreads!! They also do a thick sliced brown loaf which is great for toast.
• fresh fruit and veg
• the cheeses and continental meats
• their own brand shampoo, shower gel, dry shampoo, soaps, cleaning stuff all do the job
• non bio washing powder very cheap and smells good
• frozen garlic herb crusted fish and tuna steaks
• party food like mozzarella fingers, jalapeño poppers etc
• huge cartons of apple and orange juice
• kids love the cereals
• olive oil, pesto, pasta sauces, olives, mixed pickles
• when they had Spanish week, we got the Serrano ham, calamares, bravas, tapas, Chocolate palmera pastries and tonnes of other stuff. They have Italian food this week and also apparently do a Greek one, but not seen that yet.
• the ‘middle of Lidl’ has the usual random selection- only bought kids pyjamas so far.

Does anyone else find the fruit goes off super quick? Only thing that puts me off and I end up doing two shops- one in Lidl then Tesco for fresh fruit!
