What is the best alternative to Diet Coke?

And I know 'water' is the answer! I want a budget alternative if possible, it is DH's only vice but it is costing us a fortune. Which cheaper alternatives should I try?

I switched to squash and soda water

chocolatespiders · 06/08/2017 13:21

Have you tried supermarket own brand? Maybe just at weekends?

keepondreaming · 06/08/2017 13:22

Supermarket own brand?
Sainsbury zero Coke is 40p for 2 litre bottle, added bonus is it doesn't contain aspartame as the branded Ines do (I know it has other additives!).

VioletBow · 06/08/2017 13:22

Aldi's own is quite nice and about 40p a bottle I think

Floralnomad · 06/08/2017 13:23

There is no reasonable alternative , you just need to look around for where it's on offer and stock up then . We generally buy all ours at Costco ( coke and Pepsi Max ) but Tesco had a great deal on Pepsi varieties last week , worked out at less than 21p per can . I'm happy at anything under 25p per can generally.

WhichJob · 06/08/2017 13:23

We have tried the Tesco own brand so far, but he isn't keen. Sorry I should have been clearly I'm specifically looking for recommendations for cheaper diet cola, not alternative drinks! I have tried all sorts with him but when he fancies Coke, he fancies Coke so I want to cut back on how much we spend on Coke at least.

Xpost re own brands.

Also, I only drink it when I eat - so two (small) glasses a day.

flumpybear · 06/08/2017 13:25

Dizzy water and lemon squeezed into it or lime if preferred
I buy fizzy water from Asda 17p for big bottle

WhichJob · 06/08/2017 13:26

He is getting though a two litre bottle every two days which I know is ridiculous but he doesn't drink tea or coffee or alcohol so he doesn't feel inclined to cut down. I do try to bulk buy when it is on offer but I still think we spend about £10 a week on diet bloody Coke'

I hate fake coke but was skint this week so just got aldis own make, its fine 😀😀

flumpybear · 06/08/2017 13:28

Soda stream?

NannyR · 06/08/2017 13:31

Aldis is good, obviously it doesn't taste exactly like diet coke but chill it and it tastes fine.

LynetteScavo · 06/08/2017 13:31

I don't thank no there is an alternative if that's what he likes...even Pepsi is different. If it's his only vice then it's actually quite cheep. I would try to convince him how bad it is for him in the hope he cuts back/gives up.

VampireSnail · 06/08/2017 13:31

Twenty odd years ago I used to drink Lidl's own as an alternative to Coca Cola. I was a very fussy teen who couldn't stand anything but "proper" Coke. Lidl's own was just as nice. In fact I couldn't tell the difference.

Can't speak for their diet version though...

Groovee · 06/08/2017 13:32

I buy my diet Pepsi from Costco. It's about £5 for 24 cans.

Floralnomad · 06/08/2017 13:34

If you are a coke connoisseur you can tell the difference , even chilled and with ice - we've tried it all here .

DramaInPyjamas · 06/08/2017 13:34

Diet coke is always on deal somewhere, 2 litre bottle is usually 2 for £2.

Own brands are about 60p per 2litre - not much of a saving tbh

Gwenhwyfar · 06/08/2017 13:38

Nothing else comes close I'm afraid. I have a can or small bottle a day, which is probably already too much. I wouldn't want to be drinking more than that.

WhichJob · 06/08/2017 13:38

Floral, I'm thinking of doing a blind taste test with him or decanting cheaper cola into Diet Coke bottles as an experiment to see if he notices. Grin

Drama, whilst that is true that I often get it on offer, neither of us has time to stop at more than one supermarket to do the shop. I guess this issue is two fold; he drinks too much of it and it is the most expensive brand!

DramaInPyjamas · 06/08/2017 13:42

If you are near a Farmfoods, their Diet Coke deal is usually 3 x 3litre bottles for £5.

tshirtsuntan · 06/08/2017 13:45

Lidl freeway cola is quite similar when chilled until quite cold. £1.29 for 6 cans.

DramaInPyjamas · 06/08/2017 13:47

I used to be a Diet Coke snob, but now as long as it's cold, fizzy and somehow resembles Diet Coke, I'll drink it!

buntingqueen · 06/08/2017 13:52

I like the Asda version, as long as it is cold, I can't tell the difference. DH claims he can (but I'm not sure I believe him).

Afishcalledchips · 06/08/2017 13:54

According to my DS Lidl coke is nicer than the branded stuff. Worth a try?

annandale · 06/08/2017 13:55

I found that when I proactively drank squash, my obsession with diet coke faded, because I was mostly just thirsty.
