What is the best alternative to Diet Coke?

And I know 'water' is the answer! I want a budget alternative if possible, it is DH's only vice but it is costing us a fortune. Which cheaper alternatives should I try?

Afish - is that full sugar coke though? Completely different taste. I drink diet coke, but pepsi max is barely tolerable.

WhichJob · 06/08/2017 18:08

Annadale, I have no doubt that he is often thirsty but I never see him drink water Shock

Second soda stream- and then you can do other fizzy drinks as well. Their tonic water is also really nice Grin

FinallyHere · 06/08/2017 18:19

Water.

And a visit to a coke bottling plant, to see how corroded the pipes which carry the syrup to the production bottling line get. Very high quality metal which is just eaten away by the whatever-it-is in the syrup. I have not touched any fizzy drinks after seeng this.

Aldi.

But the 24 cans for £5 or so at Tesco is a great deal.

The cans are more fizzy, so you don't drink as much.

Trust me. Blush

jmh740 · 06/08/2017 18:40

I don't drink tea or coffee either and go through loads of diet pepsi. I don't like aldis own but I do like the lidl one which is about 50p for 2ltrs

WhichJob · 06/08/2017 19:59

jmh, I will try Lidl's own but we don't have one in our town but there is one in a town we visit occasionally so I will get one to try sometime. Although he doesn't like Pepsi so he might not agree with you Smile

I occasionally go to the cash and carry (3388) and buy 32 cans for £8 something.
If you introduced cans instead of large bottles he might only drink or or two a day and then you'd be £8 for a fortnight or so?
I think it's nicer from a tin anyway, doesn't go flat.

GodIsDead · 06/08/2017 20:51

Aldi's diet cola is pretty good. Definitely better than Tesco's!

imip · 06/08/2017 20:55

My dh is exactly the same - but his vice is Pepsi max. He doesn't drink tea or coffee, alcohol rarely.

A few weeks ago, he went to the dentist who could instantly see he drank to much soft drink and told him in no uncertain terms to stop! He is really ruining his teeth.

So, I'd recommend a trip to the dentist!

Dh now does as a pp mentions and just drinks it on the weekend, limiting it to one 1.25 lt bottle....

WhichJob · 06/08/2017 20:57

imip, interesting. DH only goes to the dentist when he has a problem which isn't ideal, me and the DC go every six months. I might give him a reminder that he ought to go.

Before he drank Diet Coke he would drink tea and coffee all day but gave them up and replaced them with DCoke, I only occasionally see him drink water.

My ds has a Diet Coke / Pepsi max habit he is 24 , goes to the dentist every 6 months and has never had a filling or indeed any work . He only drinks orange juice / Pepsi max / Diet Coke or water .

bugaboo218 · 06/08/2017 21:13

Nothing comes close to proper branded diet coke in.my opinion!

If I cannot have proper diet coke at weekends because it is not on.offer then I will drink Lidl's freeway diet coke chilled and with ice.

Lidl's coke is just about bearable and is around £1.30 for six tins.

Equimum · 06/08/2017 21:15

Unfortunately, I don't think the dentist trick always works. I hardly drink fizzy drinks (and eat limited sugar), but have loads of fillings and never visit the dentist without needing treatment.

DH is a Diet Coke addict and hasn't got a filling. I have to sit there while the dentist congratulated him for his excellent dental care and eating/drinking the right foods Angry.

Sorry to deviate.

imip · 06/08/2017 21:29

Ha, ha! Yes, dh always had the best of teeth! A running joke between us! He has always had this addiction to Pepsi max also. He is now 43, I guess time caught up with him...

I, on the other hand, gave up Pepsi max when pregnant 12 years ago. I detest any fuzzy drink now - just can't stand the taste. I have rubbish teeth!

FairfaxAikman · 06/08/2017 21:32

I'm a Diet Coke fiend, but I also find the Aldi version and Pepsi Max very palatable - thought they do taste very different to DC.

QuiteQuietly · 07/08/2017 20:15

I recently moved to very cold fizzy water and this has now replaced my previous epic DC habit (5-6 cans a day). Previous attempts at kicking the habit led to crazy-mad headaches, queasiness and bowel issues. It was honestly easier quitting smoking (which I replaced with diet coke). But the cold fizzy water has worked - it hits the back of the throat in the same way and after the first day I no longer noticed the lack of sweetness. Now gradually moving to very cold tap water (down to 4 x 0.5l bottles of fizzy a day). Bizarrely I have lost nearly a stone and a half in 6 weeks - this has been my only dietary change.

Geepee71 · 03/09/2017 18:01

Iceland usually have an offer on the 3 litre bottles!

bimbobaggins · 12/09/2017 06:13

I'm a caffeine free Diet Pepsi fan and I usually stock up when it's on special. I would rather just have water than an alternative.
As it's his only vice , can he cut back to alternative days that way he's still having it regularly.

Wow quite, I actually thought I was bad having a can every day. Well done on cutting back. That's one of the reasons I drink the caffeine free version because of the headaches I was getting. Well done on the weight loss too, that's amazing.

My hubby loves the lidl freeway coke and he was always a proper coca cola fan

thriceweedpostcsection · 16/12/2017 19:54

Please, stop with the Diet Coke.
My Ex-H drank litres of it. Aspartame is not good when consumed in volume.
He is now blind. The condition is called Optic Neuritis. He does not have MS, in case anyone thinks that this is the cause.
Optic Neuritis is linked to Aspartame poisoning. There are small numbers of people with ON, but not MS. The correlation with Aspartame consumption is highly significant. He is involved in a study, so this is not baseless fear-mongering.

Water is sugar free. Cheap too!

GoJohnnyGoGoGoGo · 16/12/2017 19:56

1st Aldi
2nd Sainsbury's
3rd Asda

GoReylo · 24/12/2017 13:02

Tell him it will knacker his joints. I had a Diet Coke fiend friend who ended up crawling upstairs on her hands and knees every night because walking hurt too much. It was the only "bad" thing in her diet. She stopped drinking it and a year later, no more pain. She was very lucky to escape permanent damage.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/12/2017 22:31

@whichjob - try decanting

Df loves coke. Says it has to be coke
I brought Lidl triple x /max - which to me tastes just like Pepsi max

I decantered into coke bottle. He has been drinking it past week and no complaints

Yet when I brought him Lidl coke and poured from that bottle he said I it didn’t taste nice

Therefore it’s all in the mind and like the show - eat well for less - if no packaging he will drink it 😂😂😂
