How on earth do people afford to have so many children?

As per the title really?

I know several people who, despite having a seemingly average income, have loads of children and a great lifestyle too!

Someone that I know has just had her fifth baby, and is already planning a sixth. She is a SAHM, her husband works in a call centre. They have a brand new build 5 bedroom house, all five children wear expensive branded clothes by Joules, Boden etc, and the older children all do loads of activities. My friend is also always buying "stuff"; things like £400 food mixers, and £500 bespoke curtains. She has also recently had a mural painted on her childrens' playroom wall, which I would not think was cheap.

Another acquaintance has got 4 children. She too is a SAHM. Her DH is a chef but he has frequent periods of unemployment. They have a lovely house, and the children don't seem to go without anything. She is always immaculately turned out, and has things like gel nails, and hair coloured on a regular basis.

I just don't know how people do it. We have stopped at two children as that is all we can afford, and I have to place a limit in the activities they can do. They don't have expensive branded clothing etc as we can't afford it. And that's with us both working in professional jobs.

How do people afford it?

I agree it should be made illegal and mortgage/insurance companies need their arses kicked for not allowing it.

Make it illegal and you'll miraculously find mortgage companies falling over themselves to offer 'special' mortgages.

I know two families were neither parent works. Both have a fantastic lifestyle, big houses, skiing, private schools for one family. One of them was bought a 900K house when they got married. The other family is soon to inherit their fourth farm. Both families are lovely, they were just lucky to be given so much for free.

One thing that does piss me off a little though is that one family is doing everything they can to avoid paying inheritance tax on anything and are outraged that they should have to.

I can only apologise for my ignorance! Smile

God yes, we privately rent and its a real eye opener :(

beepingbeep · 14/05/2014 15:11

Oh no, paperbag. You're not ignorant to it - you've read it here - so now you know I might've come across quite harshly in that post, apologies.

Many people don't realise the discrimination private renters face. You're not the only one. It would be helpful. to have that extra bit of 'assistance' as the dc are young, but otoh it's a nice feeling not claim it. I can't. wait til we earn more & no longer qualify for any state benefits. It's much more satisfying to be able to pay your own way in life.

beepingbeep · 14/05/2014 15:18

You'rebeing it should be made illegal.

We have never missed a rent payment. We scrape by, but enjoy life as much as we can with minimal disposable income. DH & I have learnt to accept that we can't claim hb, as discriminatory as that is.

paperbaghag · 14/05/2014 15:20

You weren't harsh at all. I completely understand the downsides of renting. DH and I rent ourselves but don't claim housing benefit. The so called rights of renters are virtually non existent. I'm liking the sound of labour's proposed changes re renting!

Flowers owllady and Impatient ... I have no words that don't sound trite or patronizing, but I am in awe of you both.

Call me cynical but I bet a fair few of these households are doing something bent alongside e.g. undeclared income and so on.
