I’ve been on antibiotics for bacterial tonsilitis and they seem to have worked yet I’ve know got a really bad sore throat that won’t go away, with headache on and off and body aches, feeling tired. I was thinking it’s tonsilitis again but maybe viral and it’s suddenly crossed my mind would it be covid? Hadn’t even thought of it, but because difflam etc isn’t working on the throat it must be some kind of virus?

Pretty sure I have covid now and it started a week ago with a very sore throat, especially at night and in the morning. It's still sore and I've lost my voice now, also got a vile dry cough. Others I know have said similar symptoms.

Cloud44 · 15/05/2024 21:52

Is it really sore no matter what you take for it? I had white spots on Friday on my tonsils hence why I presumed it was tonsilitis again but now they have gone the throat is so sore and I feel generally rubbish, achy, ear ache, headache.

Yes I had covid last week .. started with really sore throat then progressed to sneezing then the crippling headache and feeling out of it for a few days! I hope you feel better … I swear by the Sambucol extra defence liquid, has high doses of vit C, D and zinc.

Iggityziggety · 15/05/2024 21:54

Had some paracetamol which helped a bit.. Talking at work has really done me in and that's why I've lost my voice I think. Lemsip is doing nothing for it!

Sounds more like COVID than 100 day cough variant of whooping cough. The latter is doing the rounds here at the mo. There are a few other viruses about currently that feature sore throats, but usually with high temp and cough.

Hope you feel better soon

MissingMoominMamma · 15/05/2024 21:57

I have a sore throat, tight chest and a tickly cough. I’m also quite warm and very, very tired.

Hadn’t even considered Covid.

Cloud44 · 15/05/2024 21:57

Thank you everyone. I have had a high temperature on and off the last 4 days too. I do take Sambucol - in the hope it stops me catching these viruses - but doesn’t seem to work :( . If it was covid I don’t think there would’ve been white spots on my tonsils end of last week? Unless I had to solid then have caught covid straight after as I did feel ok at the weekend when the antibiotics kicked in?

I had it last week. Started with a really sore throat, then fever and an awful headache.

Cloud44 · 15/05/2024 21:58

Sorry typo I meant unless I had tonsilitis then caught covid straight after? I give up with all these viruses, just want to feel well for a while!

Papers have been reporting an increase in cases thanks to the flirt variant. Sore throat seems to be the main symptom

get better soon

I made myself honey, lemon and ginger tea using fresh ingredients and took cold and flu tablets. It’s a good natural remedy and helps with flu ect anyway. Otherwise have an ice lolly, that’s what I did at 3am last week!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/05/2024 22:02

I went to the doctor with what I thought was tonsillitis a few weeks ago - she swabbed me and I tested positive for Strep A. Apparently that’s absolutely rife here at the moment. I had ten days of penicillin. Possibly a useless post but thought I would throw that into the mix too!

stripytees · 15/05/2024 22:05

I have Covid currently and only had a sore throat for the first two days. Since then my worst symptom has been congestion/snotty nose. Had a high fever for the first 3 days as well.

RichTea90 · 20/05/2024 21:37

I have been sick since last Wednesday which I have put down as flu. Started off as a sore throat and then progressed to body aches, fever. Woke up and my sheets were drenched. Then symptoms developed into very stuffy nose, sinus aches, headache and sneezing.

never considered it could be COVID - my mum wants me to take a test, but I wonder what the purpose of that would be.

AnonAnonmystery · 20/05/2024 21:44

@RichTea90 if you know you’ve got it surely then you will take precautions for others not to get it?
I think we don’t have laws on isolating ect but I did exactly that as my daughter has A levels coming up - I sent her to her dads after a day of finding out and slept separately to DP until I was negative and even then I was cautious,

I wouldn’t want anyone to catch it from me after how I suffered!

Oh don’t worry, I’m pretty much self isolating and have been since last Wednesday. I work remotely but on Tuesdays I go into the office and I’ve called in sick for tomorrow. Have barely left my house. COVID aside, I’m always like this when I’ve got colds and flus. I don’t want others to catch it.

I started with a sore throat…now been diagnosed with whooping cough….I’m 3 weeks in

Copperoliverbear · 20/05/2024 23:07

I was wondering if Covid is mutating into different things and a variety of illnesses are all merging.

AnonAnonmystery · 20/05/2024 23:17

I am finding that the newest test kits straight from the shops pick up covid straight away where as with old tests it comes up negative @Copperoliverbear it’s def mutating in its own form at least!

JoanThursday · 22/05/2024 21:15

I started feeling a bit off on Monday, and woke up on Tues with a very sore throat and just a whisper of a voice.

Headache and coughing / sneezing today and, as I've been on a flight in the past week, I took a test. Very surprised to see an almost immediate positive result!

The good news is that I don't feel half as poorly as I did two years ago when I last had it .

If you're unlucky and get long covid or even just symptoms that persist for a few weeks, being able to tell a doctor that it started out as definite covid could be very useful.

A single negative test result wouldn't tell you as much, as the lateral flow tests only pick up about half of cases so you could still have covid, but it's worth doing just in case it turns out to be positive - much better to know than not.

AutumnCrow · 22/05/2024 22:14

DP and I have both had sore throats, headaches, aches and fatigue off and on for a while, and we have been negative for covid repeatedly. We are both relatively well vaccinated (because I'm immune-suppressed) and I get free tests, so we do test a fair bit.

It is worrying though, and I'm worried it's the LFTs not picking it up.

I think the newer tests pick up covid … I did an experiment when I had covid as I was so bored. New test was positive but older ones negative. I did it 3 times like this over 3 days.

stripytees · 23/05/2024 09:08

I used tests bought in February and others bought last week and both picked up my Covid immediately on every test. Took over 10 days to test negative again...

Anothervirus · 24/05/2024 16:56

@RichTea90 I could have wrote this! Started with the sore throat on Sunday then progressed exactly the same. I tested positive on Tuesday so just keeping everything crossed for an easy ride this time as had it bad last year and only just recovered a couple of months ago.
How are you now?
