Teenager with Covid with high temperature - how common is this?

fenestrina · 10/03/2022 20:01

My da, 15, has a high temperature and is probably the illest I can remember him (he's usually very healthy).

I keep hearing about everyone with mild cold-type symptoms, and teens and kids barely getting ill - especially with the current milder variant.

Has anyone else or their teens currently or recently had a very high temp as their main symptom? He also feels weak, headache, slight sore throat, aches and pains etc but these could largely be down to the temperature.

Just worried if he feels this bad on day 1, he may feel really dreadful soon. :(

He's only single-jabbed due to his age.

That was one of our teen’s first symptoms. High temp responded to paracetamol but was present for around 2 and a half days. Also had a headache. Did also give the odd ibuprofen. They recovered quite quickly.

Other teen had no temp at all but suffered for 7 days with headache and quite bad muscle and body aches.

Hope yours feels better soon.

Luckyme2 · 10/03/2022 20:30

Yes 13 year old DD had high temp for 2 days along with cold type symptoms, sneezing, runny nose and aches. She was much brighter by day 3

confusedlots · 10/03/2022 20:31

My 2 children had temperatures of 39/40 for 24 hours and then recovered very quickly after that, although they're a lot younger than your child. I have regular paracetamol and ibuprofen if they can have it round the clock until they started to improve.

I myself was floored for a few days with it. DH has virtually no symptoms other than feeling a little tired. It's very strange how it affects everyone so differently

LoganberryJam · 10/03/2022 20:31

My 15yo was like this - high temp, headache, lethargic. He was the illest I've ever seen him (he is normally very healthy). He didn't get worse after the first day or two if that makes you feel better.

catfunk · 10/03/2022 20:37

It's a very normal symptom of Covid

goldensilver · 10/03/2022 21:10

Both my kids (tween/teen) had fever for 24-48 hrs then were much better.

HappeeInParis · 10/03/2022 21:18

Both my teens were really ill for about a week, temperature, headache, couldn’t get out of bed, shivery. Definitely the illest my son has ever been. The only time my daughter has been worse was scarlet fever.

Most teens have mild symptoms but my no means all. Fwiw they both recovered fine, no long covid.

fenestrina · 10/03/2022 21:36

Thanks all - this is very reassuring.

Glad to hear of other teens with similar symptoms recovering well and quickly.

I'm not a teen but had these symptoms for 3/4 days.Hideous and No I didn't get worse.

wandawaves · 10/03/2022 22:18

My teen had mild cold symptoms for 4 days, but 2 of those days he also had a fever. He was fully recovered by day 5.

Lougle · 10/03/2022 22:22

'Mild' just means no hospital treatment needed. It doesn't mean 'not too poorly'. We had fevers for 5-6 days, I think. Try to keep fluids up.

Finallygotme · 10/03/2022 22:31

My sporty teens were also hit hard and were unwell for 10 days. Interestingly when I've said how hard they were hit others have then said that they were unwell. It's almost as it you are failing if you are sick.

Moonchild18 · 10/03/2022 22:31

My DS felt like this the first time he had covid, he's 14. He had very similar symptoms to your DS, he felt really crappy for around 3 days, I would say the initial really high temp (around 40) lasted around 24 hours then gradually went down to around 38 for the other 2 days. He's recently had covid again and although he still felt quite rubbish he was much better within 24 hours. Hope he's feeling better soon, if you feel he's not improving or getting worse then it won't do any harm to ring 111 for some advice.

Moonchild18 · 10/03/2022 22:35

He's unvaccinated btw, he was due his first vaccine the week he caught covid then just as his 12 weeks wait was up so he could go for his vaccine again he caught covid again so he's having to wait another 12 weeks

MiniDaffodils · 10/03/2022 22:39

Very common - it’s one of the main symptoms!

FusionChefGeoff · 10/03/2022 22:52

DS(9) had a high temp for 36 hrs then made a miraculous overnight recovery!

Oh no! Glad he's recovered anyway, even without the jabs.

My DD (20) has been quite unwell with it but fever not too high. I had a high fever on day 1 though (103.8/39.9) and my resting heart rate kept spiking over 100 bpm (as my watch kept telling me very loudly). Fever and RHR all went down on day 2 though.

Hate to imagine what a 'serious' case of this would feel like 💩

PickAChew · 11/03/2022 00:02

DH and our 15yo both had a fever for a few days with Omicron. I didn't

liveforsummer · 11/03/2022 07:20

High temperature is a common main symptom of all the variants of covid for all ages.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 11/03/2022 07:22

My teen had a high temp and sleeping most of the time for the first two days, then the temp went and it gradually got better - but he was definitely more unwell than his younger siblings. Not badly unwell though.

mizu · 11/03/2022 07:25

Gosh yes! DD2 15 had it last year. She is never ill - I don't even think she's ever had a day off school ! She was in bed for nearly a week and off for 10 days. High temperature which lasted a few days.
