Is your child's secondary school ditching masks or keeping them?

Just had an email from ds's secondary school. They will still have to wear masks at all times. My ds was really looking forward to ditching it.
What are other schools doing?

Don't know what my DCs school is doing as we haven't been told anything. As they've had masks since September (partly when they didn't have to) then I suspect they'll keep them, in communal areas at least.

DrRamsesEmerson · 20/01/2022 11:22

Dad's school is ditching them, thank goodness- had the email this morning.

Deux · 20/01/2022 11:23

Following government timings so will be completely gone next Thursday.

Arucanafeather · 20/01/2022 11:24

Keeping in communal areas and would ideally like them to still be worn in class but it will be the students/teachers personal choice.

JaninaDuszejko · 20/01/2022 11:25

Just had the email. No masks in classrooms, just in communual areas.

Dghgcotcitc · 20/01/2022 11:31

Keeping them, but ours has kept them all the way through so no surprise…I assumed most schools did it’s only on mumsnet I hear of senior schools without masks

SlipperyLizard · 20/01/2022 11:33

Ours have dropped them in classrooms, kept in corridors. DD was really happy to not have to wear one in class, I hope they drop corridors soon.

Smallinthesmoke · 20/01/2022 11:35

What mixed bag. Our one is keeping them in classrooms.

MarshmallowFondant · 20/01/2022 11:35

We are in Scotland where secondary pupils have been wearing masks since August 2020.

The way Sturgeon is going, I expect to see them removed about June 2030. Just to "keep us all safe for a wee hike linger". AngryConfused

Popplebop · 20/01/2022 11:37

Keeping them for the time being as cases are high in school

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 20/01/2022 11:38

School I work in is keeping them and in lessons.

FanFckingTastic · 20/01/2022 11:40

Both my DS's schools have emailed to say that masks are gone from today in classrooms, and from next week everywhere. Both boys very happy although to be honest it wasn't particularly enforced anyway.

Pootle40 · 20/01/2022 11:48

Doesn't feel like a school could enforce it if a child no longer wants to wear it since the govt have said they will be removed. Didn't Boris also say an update on communal areas was coming so likely be scrapped there too?

ShinyHappyPoster · 20/01/2022 11:50

Keeping them because they care about their staff and their pupils.

Troublesometooth · 20/01/2022 11:57

Ditching them thankfully. I’m a teacher and I hate teaching in a mask.

theemperorhasnoclothes · 20/01/2022 12:03

I haven't heard yet, I hope they keep them. It's been notable that the cases in my DD's primary school have been at far higher rates than the secondary since schools went back, despite the fact that the primary is a tiny school with 1/10th the students, half the kids in the primary are currently off with covid.

The secondary had a big outbreak before masks though.

The masks are making a difference, seemingly, in the secondary.

theemperorhasnoclothes · 20/01/2022 12:04

Do you have to teach in a mask? My DDs school allows teachers to take them off for teaching. That seems like a good compromise to be honest. If most kids are wearing them, the risk will be massively reduced and only marginal risk increase from one person not wearing them. Especially if it's an adult who can be relied upon to lateral flow test regularly and has been vaccinated.

Sirzy · 20/01/2022 12:05

Ours are still strongly recommended they are worn.

Start of term they had to shut for 3 days due to the staff shortages so it’s understandable they want to keep on top of things as much as possible

Whitefire · 20/01/2022 12:25

Our school is keeping them for now.

TheChip · 20/01/2022 12:26

Keeping them for the time being as cases are high at the minute

Sunshine2007 · 20/01/2022 12:37

Keeping them for now, although it’s not enforceable obviously.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 20/01/2022 12:40

@theemperorhasnoclothes

I don’t teach in my mask, most teachers in my school take them off to teach

FrenchyQ · 20/01/2022 12:41

My son's school are keeping them wearing them at all times until the end of next week and will review again then.

DaisyTheUnicorn · 20/01/2022 12:42

Wow our secondary didnt even have them in the classroom this last time really. "Personal choice. " They have done with corridors though.

Twiglets1 · 20/01/2022 12:53

The school where I work masks have been dropped from today in lessons and from communal areas from next Thursday
