Can you describe how your sense of taste changed?

Goodness me, I never had health anxiety before all this.

Anyway, I’ve been isolating with my child all week. My daily lateral flows have been negative, but today I feel “off”. My sense of taste seems different, too. Coffee tastes DISGUSTING but I’m not sure if it was a dud one (someone brought it from a drive thru for me). Also, seem to have a bitter taste in my mouth.

I still have a sense of taste. Can anyone describe how their taste changed with covid? Thank you!

Mine vanished completely. I likely had Delta variant though and from what I've heard, loss of taste is less common with Omicron.

BrutusMcDogface · 16/01/2022 11:59

Thank you 👍

Mines just really dulled, I can taste stuff but everything has like half the taste it usually does if that makes sense. I keep putting hot sauce on my food to flavour it up 😂

ThePlantsitter · 16/01/2022 12:14

Honestly, I think you probably have Covid. I had a disgusting taste in my mouth as well as everything tasting just a bit... Less than usual. Sorry. Flowers

BrutusMcDogface · 16/01/2022 12:54

Thank you both. I’ve just done a pcr test- luckily could book it and go 30 mins later! My daughter tested positive on a pcr when her lateral flows had been negative so I think I need to double check.

Everything tasting “less” is about right! Thanks again.

Me and dh both positive over past week - day 11 now.

No change for me, but dj says everything tastes like it’s gone off a bit to him. Things that taste fine to the rest of us, he’s been checking expiry dates and accusing the children of leaving things out of the fridge when it’s all fine.

Sloughsabigplace · 16/01/2022 13:05

*dh not dj

TreeLawney · 16/01/2022 13:12

Mine just completely disappeared.

Yellow85 · 16/01/2022 13:14

Completely disappeared but I had Delta. Like someone just flicked a switch it was that insane. Post booster however it’s been horrible tastes. I still haven’t got it back

Latenightreader · 16/01/2022 13:17

My sense of smell and taste both went about five days in. I realised after I drank some water which had been on my bedside table for 24 hours (picked up the wrong glass!) and didn't do my usual recoil from the stale taste! I could taste a few things but it was very rare and finally came back 2-3 weeks later.

wineandsunshine · 16/01/2022 13:25

I'm on day 7 currently - taste has slightly gone and I have a horrible taste in my mouth.

It reminds me of morning sickness 😫

ShellieEllie · 16/01/2022 13:37

I have parosmia following Covid back in August, sI hope you're not developing it. Mine has been getting worse and worse and there are so many foods I can't eat now. I'm pretty much having to live on cheese, seafood, pasta, tomatoes and potatoes. Coffee, onions, eggs, meat, chocolate are the worst offenders they make me want to vomit, the smell is awful, no way they could pass my lips to try to taste. Imagine rotting meat mixed with rotting fish with some ammonia thrown in, it's awful. There's a supportive group on Facebook with lots of members, mainly from US & UK suffering the same. There seems to be no cure other than time. Fingers crossed your experience is short lived and mild, or the coffee was a duff one!

Petalpup · 16/01/2022 13:52

My taste didn’t really go but my smell did which in turn affected taste.
Loss of smell was so weird-suddenly could smell absolutely nothing-not even getting my nose right into a bottle of tcp or the stinkiest dog treats (which usually make me gag even through a sealed bag!).

BrutusMcDogface · 16/01/2022 14:24

ShellieEllie, that sounds awful! You poor thing 😢

Couldn't bear coffee and I normally love it. Couldn't abide fruit, ditto. Otherwise taste was fine but smell disappeared completely

EmmasMum12 · 16/01/2022 14:27

BTW both are normal now - Covid in middle November

MaddieElla · 16/01/2022 14:37

Both taste and smell vanished completely.

It has its pros though, I didn't get irritated when the husband burnt his toast or cooked a fry up because I couldn't smell a thing.

Hated not being able to taste though, that was a waste of a lovely roast lamb dinner. Sad

sheeplikessleep · 16/01/2022 14:38

I’m on day 5 and everything tastes a bit dull to me. Weirdly the only things that taste different have been sweet potato fries (with vinegar on), salt and vinegar chips and ketchup. I can only think it’s the vinegar or acid. But they tasted vile and very strong taste, gone off and a bit muddy in taste. I hope it’s not the start of other foods changing in taste.

emwithme · 16/01/2022 17:45

Two days before COVID I complained to DH about how spicy the onion in our meal was. He looked at me like Hmm but humoured me.

Then the day it came on, I nicked one of DD's crisps at teatime, tasted very strong of cheese and onion, yummy. An hour later I was chopping onions and realised I couldn't smell it at all. My (routine) LFT which was on the side had gone positive in less than 8 minutes. PCR the following day confirmed COVID. I'm presuming Delta as this was November.

For the first four or five days I had no taste or smell at all. Then taste came back 90% overnight but not smell. We are now day 60 post PCR and smells are hit and miss - citrus came back early but I can't smell pine at all (even shops full of re Christmas trees didn't register). Coffee and petrol both smell awful where I liked the smells before.

Alcohol is the main issue re taste now though. Everything just tastes like cheap vodka - it's as if all I can taste is the ethanol and none of the nice tones.

BrutusMcDogface · 16/01/2022 18:05

Hmm, thank you for all the responses. I’ve just eaten a handful of salt and vinegar crisps and they tasted nice, but my cheese on toast had a horrible after taste.

I think I’m probably fine and imagining things but I’ve been cooped up with a tiny one this week and want to make sure I’m ok for work next week. Tiny one spent the week licking me etc ConfusedHmm

Sorry to say, one of the first things I noticed was coffee tasting really bitter. I then lost my sense of taste completely a day or so later.

Mysaz · 31/03/2022 11:13

I'm currently in the same boat. Did the odd taste in your mouth ever go?

thelittlestrhino · 31/03/2022 11:25

Only thing for me (only symptom at all!) was that a packet of salt and vinegar crisps smelled and tasted horrifically acidic.

Mrsjayy · 31/03/2022 11:34

I had what I would call an exaggerated taste for a few days, it was weird I had a fry up before I tested positive and the bacon and egg tasted really "strong" as did fruit and salt and vinegar crisps. All back to normal now.

neveradullmoment99 · 31/03/2022 15:14

My daughter tested positive and every tasted of snot!
She was devastated.
As for me, I lost mine but not completely. I could tase things initially when I would bite into something, then not at all for the remainder of eating it.
