For those who still watch him, and respect his dedication to bringing unbiased reports on the Covid struggle these past 2 years.

Info from the studies mentioned sound promising for us all!

Grin I suspect his dedication has something to with the amount of money rolling in from each one.

Posters explained many times why his videos are complete nonsense to you, and instead of replying (after insulting everyone), you start a new thread?

He will have been monetised on YouTube for a while now

Haffiana · 13/01/2022 12:23

Were you paid to post this, OP? You should have been. Make sure you get your fair dues, because others ARE being paid. Don't do it for free.

CUniverse · 13/01/2022 12:34

@Haffiana Not paid no. Only took a second, think of it as giving back, a charitable offering :)

You are a mug then. Lots of money available for posting misinformation on Social Media.

You are depriving your kids, OP.

CUniverse · 13/01/2022 13:45

@Haffiana you’re almost as charitable as me, offering advice to me advice for free.

Looks like we’re both depriving our children of a money making opportunity. SNAP, we’re so similar.

I watched him avidly in the early days of covid but went off him over Invermectin.

Flaxmeadow · 13/01/2022 14:36

Yeah when he started going on about ivermectin

The whole ivermectin thing is completely bonkers in the USA. Often antivaxxers will tout it as some kind of 'safe' alternative to the vaccine but when they can't get hold of it they resort to dosing themselves up with the ivermectin meant for horses and cattle. They wont take a covid vaccine but will take an animal drug that has some ingredients that have never been tested on humans HmmConfused

Sparklingbrook · 13/01/2022 14:43

I also watched him avidly to begin with then things got a bit weird. But I still find it interesting what he has to say.

TulipsGarden · 13/01/2022 17:01

He did go a bit weird over ivermectin and also vaccine reactions. And recently mice again. I have this vague hope that he was trying to draw anti-vaxxers to his channel and then convince them to get vaccinated with his data, because I've watched quite a few videos recently and he seems to have gone more back to normal now :D

He does seem hopeful. He changed his backdrop the other day, that made me feel better about everything.

Volhhg · 13/01/2022 21:28

Mainstream media makes money too (and the monetisation of his videos is such a tiny miniscule amount to what big media companies make) so I don't have a problem with him making money just like other you tubers. He has a PhD in health education and he looks at studies, breaks them down and makes them understandable. If he ever passes opinion he always explains that's just his opinion. He addressed some of the Ivermectin studies, spoke about them and explained what their flaws were. Isn't that a good thing that he spoke about it rather than not? He definitely did not come accross as pro ivermectin he just spoke about findings.

He didn't just speak about findings, that's the issue. Of course accurate discussion of potential coronavirus drugs including ivermectin is important but isn't what was doing.

He quoted ivermectin studies that have been retracted due to fraud, used findings from studies that epidemiologists have explained cannot be used to infer causality due to how low quality they are, and makes basic epidemiological errors. He tried to claim cases in Japan went down due to ivermectin, which was patently false for a number of issues.

Many epidemiologists have addressed Campbell's claims and why they are not true. It is obvious at this point that there is no strong evidence for ivermectin in treating COVID.

leafyygreens · 13/01/2022 21:35

Of course - but the fact that he makes so much money from a single video (and that the more controversial and clickbait the title is, the more views it will have) is important when you are considering why he might be incentivised to promote misinformation.

And of course the OP is referencing him as being "dedicated", when in reality he is raking it in each time he posts a video.

Volhhg · 13/01/2022 21:52

Leafy greens You could apply all this to mainstream media. He did not claim that Japan had lowered their cases with the use of ivermectin. He questioned whether it was a possibility or not that the use of ivermectin in Japan was a part of this fall in cases. He also suggested that It could be a new less pathological dominant strain had taken over there. I think it's great to hear somebody daring to speak about something as contraversial as ivermectin. Its ok to question things. He's extremely pro pharmacology and has been bigging up the vaccines and treatments from the start.

He did - I remember he made that exact claim in a video, it was commented on by many actual epidemiologists explaining why you could not assume causality.

I think it's great to hear somebody daring to speak about something as contraversial as ivermectin. Its ok to question things.

Yes - many epidemiologists discuss and assess the current ivermectin literature, it was a very regularly commented on topic. It has died down now because it is widely accepted that there is no robust evidence it is effective in treating COVID.

Pointing out studies that are low quality or that they have been retracted due as they were fraudelent (i.e., never actually conducted, or not in the way described, or that the data has been faked) is not the same thing as censoring discussion.

Pfizer set to make $100bn profit this year but nothing to see there

Yes he will be.
Someone with 1 million subscribers on YouTube makes about £44,000 a year.
Campbell has over 2 million subscribers and he posts a video everyday.

He probably stopped talking about ivermectin because YouTube will de-monitise if the content is misleading

Volhhg · 13/01/2022 22:43

Yeah I think he stopped talking about ivermectin because you tube probably threatened to take his videos down. Shame. He pointed out that the studies were flawed and pointed out the way in which they were - what's the problem with that? He's discussing it that's good. Nothing to be frightened of. He may be monetised but he has the minimum amounts of ads you can have on so definitely not milking it. Most monetised you tubers stick an ad on half way through sometimes twice he's never done this. Being monetised on you tube isn't as simple as it once was and now you have to pay US taxes on these videos. He also has a free nursing physiology book that is FREE and distributed in lower income countries to aid local nursing ed programs.

@Volhhg

This has been discussed in detail on the original John Campbell thread, you could have a read?

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4371621-Dr-John-Campbell-YouTube-videos-what-happened?pg=1

I'm still not sure why the OP started a new one when they were very active on it.

He didn't point out that the studies were flawed - that would've been incredibly helpful - he just kept quoting studies, not mentioning that they had been retracted or were low quality, and saying there was a role for ivermectin in treating COVID. This is not the case - there is no good quality evidence it is effective.

All his ivermectin videos are still up there.

Pfizer making profits does not make John Campbell any less problematic.
leafyygreens · 13/01/2022 23:00

Incidentally why don't you care about Moderna making profits @hamstersarse? Or any of the other companies who are profiting from novel therapeutic agents?

I do find it odd how all the social media hate moved in an almost co-ordidnated fashion from AZ to Pfizer, it's interesting.

Volhhg · 14/01/2022 01:01

No I haven't read another thread but there's no problem with someone starting another thread, Mumsnet is full of threads about the same old things.
Just watched his video on Japan and Ivermectin. He does not claim that ivermectin was the reason for the sudden fall in cases. He shows interest in the fact that Japan has allowed the treatment of ivermectin and can prescribe legally - that is interesting isn't it! He then went to suggest that the fall in cases could also be because the virus had mutated there in a particular way and that many Japanese people have a gene which means they have an enzyme that attacks RNa viruses. He suggests that this combination of viral mutation and enzyme could be a reason for the sudden drop in cases. He only suggested these things as possibility. He also goes on to say that some drug companies are exploring the idea of using this enzyme to create covid treatments - also very interesting! I'm looking forward to watching more videos. I'm much happier with a self effacing northern PhD pensioner getting my pennies than sky and fox news
