Anyone have symptoms and positive lft, but negative pcr

2boysand1princess · 11/01/2022 20:53

Asking for a family member. 3 members of family had covid last week and week before, youngest sibling positive on lft, but negative on pcr. She is sure she has it though as has symptoms.
Anyone else in similar situation.

Loads of people have posted on here recently saying the same thing and I've heard it irl too. Maybe try to get another PCR? And keep doing LFTs. There's always a chance the PCR swab wasn't taken well enough or in the right conditions. Hope everyone's okay and through the worst of it now x

It’s really difficult to get another pcr in our area at the moment. By the time she gets the pcr she probably won’t even be infectious anymore! I’ve tried searching for similar posts, didn’t find many, I will try again. Thanks

If you have a positive lateral flow you don't need to do a PCR anymore. They are positive and the isolation starts from the day the symptoms started or from the positive lateral result. So I wouldn't worry about them being different a positive from either now counts as a positive.

Thanks for reply. She tested positive on lateral flow before the rules changed. She has had several positive lfts, but one negative pcr. Either way she’s isolating. I was just asking around if anyone else had similar with symptoms of covid. Pcrs are reliable apparently, but surely you don’t get 3-4 positive lfts by mistake either especially if you have been in close contact with positive cases and have symptoms yourself.

My son has had the exact same thing 2 positive ltfs and one negative pcr, i was so confused. I blamed my husband not doing it properly 😂 but it sounds like it is a thing!

The school has said to go by the lateral flows especially as 5 children in his class are off.

NotAdultingToday · 12/01/2022 20:38

Oh i should also say he is asymptomatic his usual self and i only tested because the school asked.

User3456 · 12/01/2022 20:48

I haven't myself but have heard of this happening to a few people, some not testing positive on first PCR and then doing another one four or five days in that comes back positive. But it's anecdotal.
It was happening a lot when there was that lab issue too but I am hopeful that's not what is behind this now as I hope they have resolved the lab issues.
I'm glad she's doing the right thing by isolating regardless.
I think any positive lateral flows are really important to log on the government website, so it's on your records (eg if you get any complications or long covid for example) and also so the government can monitor the figures for positive cases.
I hope she feels better soon.

My dd had a positive lat flow (well 2 as she did another one to check). Then the next day had a pcr which was inconclusive. She did develop symptoms after her positive lat flow and definitely has it.

Thecat19342 · 13/01/2022 08:26

Same here positive lfts and negative pcrs..my work require a positive pcr to take time off.
Dh and ds tested postive on pcr...I took 2 and both negative. But strong lines on various brands of lfts..all the same symptoms.

CalmDownBoris72 · 13/01/2022 10:04

Yes, I 100% have covid but PCR x 2 are negative. My husband and 2 DC have covid and we’re not isolating from one another.

I’m isolating with them all.

tumbledryerfault · 13/01/2022 10:21

I've just done a lateral flow this morning - positive on flow flex but negative on the nose and throat lateral flow. I'm a teacher so principal has asked me to go for a pcr to confirm. Has anyone had this before and what was the outcome? Also if my pcr is negative does that now override the lateral flow even with the rule change? The mind boggles lol

WorkEvent · 13/01/2022 10:23

Yes, my brother got a positive on his second PCR after positive LFT with symptoms. If in doubt, repeat the PCR. The first may have been a false negative for any number of reasons.

Desperatelywaiting2022 · 14/01/2022 14:37

@tumbledryerfault I've been testing on lft since Monday as I started with sore throat on the mornings & that's it.
I tested positive on the flex flow ones yesterday so thursday although it was a very, very faint line but definitely still there. Did the nose & throat lft straight after & tested negative, went for a pcr as I'm a childminder & could possibly claim the £500 grant but would need a positive pcr for that.
Did another flex flow one this morning & it was still positive clearer than yesterday & could easily see the line within 15 minutes. Got my pcr results back about an hour ago & that was negative.
Done another flex flow one & that was again a very, very faint line & did a nose & throat lft at the same time & that again is negative.

tumbledryerfault · 14/01/2022 14:44

Same here- positive lateral flows on flow flex, negative on nose and throat lateral flows - pcr back this morning negative! I've been for one more pcr to make sure, if it's negative I won't be using the flow flex brand again!

CalmDownBoris72 · 14/01/2022 16:09

From the tests we have, flowflex afe the most sensitive and show positive before the other brands (we have loads of orient gene).

usernotfound0000 · 14/01/2022 16:12

Yep SIL and DN tested positive on LFT on Sunday but PCR came back negative. They were feeling ill so I feel they should have followed the LFT result but they haven't done that.

MagicKit · 14/01/2022 17:54

Positive LFTs here and negative PCR just returned

TomNook21 · 17/01/2022 16:18

I've been testing positive on LFT since December 16th. 5 negative PCR tests in that time. Only one negative LFT in the entire time. I isolated for 10 days at the start as I felt like utter garbage and was worried about Christmas. We are assuming that I've had a seasonal coronavirus rather than covid19. It is most bizarre that these LFT are still positive after all this time. No other family member has had a positive in this time.

Iggly · 17/01/2022 21:58

Did you test with Flowflex LFTs? We’ve had endless faint positives with them and negative PCRs.

TomNook21 · 17/01/2022 22:15

Yes mine were on flow flex. Just got some others today so will try one.

2boysand1princess · 17/01/2022 22:15

I didn’t use flowflex, I used the old style lfts.

ReiltinDubh · 17/01/2022 22:17

I had this before Christmas, positive antigen (like super positive - line showed up strongly straight away), then negative pcr the next day. I had symptoms, in fact my sense of smell is not fully back yet! I isolated anyway and kept doing antigens till day 10 by which time they were clear anyway. But had several different brands, different packs all positive. So weird. Prob should have gone for another pcr but was isolating anyway and was really difficult to get pcr where I am at that time

2boysand1princess · 17/01/2022 22:20

Same with family member, who has been getting faint positives, she also didn’t flowflex lfts just olde style lfts. It’s weird because she isn’t getting faint positives now, which makes me think she must have had some infection that was causing a faint positive test result

OP posts:
CC1991 · 17/01/2022 22:35

I’ve had about 4 ‘false positives’ on the old style LFTs, but my Flowflex ones have always been negative. Had very mild symptoms which coincided with the positive LFTs.

lineandsinker · 21/01/2022 19:37

I’ve had multiple positive LFT and a negative PCR today. I’ve got a sore, itchy throat and a cough (related to the itchy throat, I think) so not sure what to do. I’m expected back at work due to as PCR result 🤷‍♀️
