Anyone managed to get their 5-11 year old vaccinated yet?

As household contacts of a CEV person my kids are now eligible for Covid vaccination (link here for anyone unaware).

I'm trying to get it organised, but the GP say they don't do it, the local vaccination team say they don't do it and the schools immunisation team (both local and county) say they don't do it either. Each pass me to the other! I know systems for extra vaccinations for CEV folk and their households have been badly organised and know it may take some time for the local health authorities to organise it, but I'm posting in the hopes that someone has managed it, so we can try whatever they did to get theirs done! :)

(and i'll say upfront I'm not looking for a debate about vaccinating children, thanks!)

I don't think the NHS have got it organised yet. I am chasing our local team that did my older child.

Latest advice from the CCG I work for issued before Christmas, was that it was planned to be rolled in the new year and surgeries should compile lists of eligible patients. However it stressed that the priority for all vaccines were for the oldest patients in the community as even with vulnerabilities the older generations were of a higher risk to covid than children. Our concentration at the moment Is the immune suppressed patients who were given the 3rd primary doses back in Sept/oct making sure they get their booster (4th dose) . Of course I can only comment for the CCG I work for but vaccinating at risk 5-11s whilst it is very much in the pipeline, its not imminent.

That's really useful to know - thank you! :)

I live in an area sadly filled with many anti-vax folks and as I understand it there's plenty of slack in the system for adding in kids, but I totally understand why boosters for immunosuppressed is a priority!

As an immunosuppressed person currently trying to organise my 4th dose, my kids are currently the biggest risk to me though, so the best way to protect me (alongside my booster) is to vaccinate them! (Not having a go at you here, just explaining!)

Oh that's annoying if it's replicated nationally Well. Will they make exceptions?

herecomesthsun · 05/01/2022 15:24

my primary school age child is in the household of someone immunosuppressed.

119 say they haven't started rolling out vaccines for 5-11s yet.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 05/01/2022 15:29

Food same here. My consultant has said there's no point putting a 4th dose into me because I'm too immunosuppressed to have any response. Meantime I live with an unvaccinated child.

roarfeckingroarr · 05/01/2022 15:30

I wouldn't do it

herecomesthsun · 05/01/2022 15:31

you wouldn't live with an unvaccinated child? seems harsh

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 05/01/2022 15:36

Do you think we should put them in the shed here?

herecomesthsun · 05/01/2022 15:37

better ask roar

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 05/01/2022 15:39

I haven't got a shed. Perhaps she has. Grin

herecomesthsun · 05/01/2022 15:41

mind you, I was researching a caravan for me to move into on the drive

but I think they would be too wide for our gate, the volvo goes through with cam to spare

herecomesthsun · 05/01/2022 15:41

cm we don't have a cam

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 05/01/2022 15:43

I did wonder if VolvoCam was some nich thing...

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 05/01/2022 15:43

Niche not nich

herecomesthsun · 05/01/2022 15:46

we do have a couple of nitches where the volvo has got too close to the gate

FoodSchmood · 05/01/2022 15:47

Ooh, I’ve got two sheds! One for each kid..l though the kid at the allotment might not get fed as often…

I came off my meds completely for my third dose, (against my consultants advice but I was desperate to get protected after the first two jabs didn’t do much) but can’t risk it again as I’m still getting stabilised back on them. I did develop antibodies that time, but given what we know about how fast they wane against omicron I’m pretty worried tbh.

Well, there’s some half grown leeks and the stems of the sprout plants, but not much else atm sadly. Though given the lack of heating in the shed I guess it’ll be the least of their worries… Wink

Those trying to get a 4th dose, keep trying - my mum had a 4th dose at end of December. She’s had 2AZs, a Pfizer and a Moderna so it seems that mix and match is fine. She is on that list of super vulnerable people and the GP offered her the 4th.

Who knows? But I imagine if they start looking at patients on an individual basis rather than a collective then that could potentially lead to further delays in the roll out. All I can say from my limited experience from one local authority is that the people behind the scenes are working flat out to ensure the vaccine rollout especially to those most vulnerable is done efficiently as possible. The government has a track record of announcing their elaborate plans to vaccinate everyone in the country within a day without giving those involved with the roll out a heads up so they can at least begin planning, Instead we generally find out these things same as the rest of the public and then be expected to deliver over night.
PastMyBestBeforeDate · 05/01/2022 15:58

Very true Well and, as a different bit of the public sector, I have seen the scramble. I'm always unfailingly polite to the poor sod who picks up my phone call :)

FoodSchmood · 05/01/2022 15:58

Totally understand that the folks on the ground are doing their best, my ire is fully reserved for the gov on this issue!

But after 22 months of living a half life (not even that really) now that they are finally eligible I just want to get my kids vaccinated as fast as humanly possible and based on past experience the best way to make things happen is to get on the phone and chase it up with everyone and anyone instead of sitting and waiting for someone to get in touch. I wouldn’t have got my third dose until nearly xmas if I had waited to be contacted. Instead I had it October 1st. Sometimes you have to be the squeaky wheel.

Likewise, I’m immensely grateful to everyone working their arses off making all the vaccinations happen. None of these delays are their fault and I would never be rude or unpleasant to the overworked folks on the end of the phone!
