London hospital admissions and further restrictions

Keepgoing88 · 29/12/2021 19:46

So I’ve seen boris is telling us to enjoy our new year but I’ve also just seen that London hospital admissions have breached the 400 marker (which was a benchmark for further restrictions ?!) I’m not for a lockdown but is boris really just going to sit and do nothing . I am frankly shocked he hasn’t at least given a press briefing or something !

Queue everyone telling you it is milder...so many people getting it enough of the population will need hospital care.
How will places be staffed?
I do not understand how a PM can hide away, a brief comment today is not good enough.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 29/12/2021 19:56

I think he's on holidays or something but even if he wasn't he's not much use while he has the anti restriction MPs calling the shots

refraction · 29/12/2021 19:57

Agree Op. The number of children worries me too. I know it is more nuanced regarding chld admissions but it seems under reported.

Southbucksldn · 29/12/2021 19:58

I suppose it depends how long each patient is now admitted for? 400 may have been the threshold pre vaccinations and pre other treatment . I guess it depends on severity of disease and how long they are in patients.
I’d be interested to know the current criteria. I expect that they don’t want to do a lockdown because it is mainly for the unvaccinated by choice? Is an interesting question!

Keepgoing88 · 29/12/2021 20:04

I would just like Boris to stand up and give us some information!

SouthOfFrance · 29/12/2021 20:09

Was it 400 by a certain time frame though?

ifonly4 · 29/12/2021 20:11

I think the government are very much of the mindset we have to learn to live with covid, and push it as far as possible without imposing restrictions as we could have a few years of this and can't keep closing things down/giving loans/grants/furlow.

BigBenji · 29/12/2021 20:13

Didn't he say today that we should go out and enjoy New Year's Eve and keep spreading covid? 🤦‍♀️

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 29/12/2021 20:14

He may bring in the rule of 6 in the new year but economics mean a lockdown and furlough will not happen again

ElectraBlue · 29/12/2021 20:16

Check the small prints...the people in hospital are not all being admitted because of Covid. In many cases they come in for something and are tested when at the hospital as a routine procedure and this is when the virus is spotted. Or they actually catch it in at the hospital....

The figures have been presented in a very particular way but now it seems more people are challenging the blanket numbers.

Also if the majority of the people who are in hospital because of Covid are unvaccinated, then the solution is for them to take the bloody vaccine! not to lock up the people who have played their part and got their vaccines/boosters.

TokyoSushi · 29/12/2021 20:25

I very much get the impression we're in the process of 'sacking it off' to coin a local phrase.

It rather feels like the government just can't be bothered anymore, have given up and are waiting to see how it plays out. I suppose we've tried pretty much every other strategy so now we're trying 'do nothing.' Its certainly a gamble.

WrongWayApricot · 29/12/2021 20:39

I'd prefer it if Chris Whitty just started his own programme, I don't really need to hear blowjob say anything other than 'I resign'.

whittingtonmum · 29/12/2021 22:01

I agree with OP. I would also like to hear the 400 number in relations to London hospital admissions explained as this was a threshold we were told about. And preferably by a scientist - not a politician and by Johnson least of all.

3cats4poniesandababy · 29/12/2021 22:08

But how many are people with covid rather than in for covid? And also how many are unvacinnated? Why should the whole country grind to a halt and cause millions in damage to the economy because a few aren't vaccinated? I have no problem with people not wanting to be vaccinated but it is time we learnt to live with covid and those not vaccinated are always going to be at risk.

Madhairday · 29/12/2021 22:18
www.theguardian.com/world/2021/dec/29/how-can-we-measure-the-true-scale-of-uk-covid-hospital-admissions
Good article, showing the majority of covid patients are in for covid rather than with - 70% on last report (new report this week, may be lower then as far more cases.) Also reminds us that those admitted with covid or who contract it in hospital shouldn't be discounted - often covid will cause huge complications in patients, and they'll also have to be put on covid wards meaning more space issues so it all has a knock on effect. It's so much more nuanced than simply shouting 'but but but withcovidofcovid'.

XenoBitch · 29/12/2021 22:21

Why should the whole country lockdown because the most densely populated city has hit some threshold?

Unsure33 · 29/12/2021 22:30

@Keepgoing88

I would just like Boris to stand up and give us some information!
The “ information “ is published every day!

It’s high cases in london so what other information do you want ?

Katie517 · 29/12/2021 22:31

It’s being widely reported that there are a lot incidental covid admissions because the infection rate is so high. So people going in for other reasons who happen to have covid cases, we can’t bring in restrictions based on flawed data, we would be better looking at ICU/ ventilator numbers which are flat or falling in some regions

Gensola · 29/12/2021 22:33

But the vast majority of those seriously unwell and in ICU are unvaccinated. Why should the whole country lockdown, children miss school, people lose their jobs, mental health go down the toilet? we need to learn to live with the virus and if people choose to be unvaccinated then they take the consequences.

Lifeispassingby · 29/12/2021 22:39

London hospitals don’t just look after London residents though, people from all over the country need London hospitals for treatment and rely on them being available and fully staffed

Starcup · 29/12/2021 22:49

@refraction

Agree Op. The number of children worries me too. I know it is more nuanced regarding chld admissions but it seems under reported.
Oh right, so do you a link regarding admission of children due to covid then? (And not RSV as that’s quite common….)
Starcup · 29/12/2021 22:51

@XenoBitch

Why should the whole country lockdown because the most densely populated city has hit some threshold?
And have a higher proportion of unvaccinated people?!….
JadeandGreen · 29/12/2021 23:06

Boris said today that 90% of people in hospital are vaccinated.

Starcup · 29/12/2021 23:11

Haven’t been boosted…..
