Omicron is not an illness!

People on MN are claiming they have omicron, or their DH/DCs have omicron or asking if someone else has omicron. Omicron is not a virus. The virus is covid! Omicron is a variant of covid. All virus have variants. Flu has new ones all the time, but we don't use the variant name, we still call it flu.

Also, LFTs and PCRs are tests to detect COVID. In the results you will only find out if you have COVID or not. The omicron variant is something that labs and researchers can detect and they are compiling statistics about its spread but these results are not being given to individuals as a matter of course. Simple common sense would tell you this. The LFTs and PCRs that people are doing regularly are COVID tests and the results are positive/negative for COVID. There is no mention in these results of omicron.

Eeeeh @CommonRoom I'm mortified for ye pet 😬

TheVampiresWife · 22/12/2021 07:35

Also I've read the word 'Omicron' so many times on this thread it's now lost all meaning

I’m in London, it’s definitely omicron

Being in London doesn't mean it's automatically the omicron variant. Whilst omicron may be the most common variant at the moment, other variants still, exist there. It could be delta or even plain old covid classic.

You only know for sure if your PCR test has been sequenced and they've told you.

In many areas they aren't sequencing so most people will never know which variant they have.

Calyx72 · 22/12/2021 07:47

OP thanks, I was not sure about whether PCR test would tell a person if they had the Omicron variant and I had a team member asking me. Also in a GP meeting last week a GP asked the team. It's not common knowledge that one doesn't get told.

Calyx72 · 22/12/2021 07:50

Even if test and trace contacts someone to tell them it's still not common knowledge.

Some people on this thread are acting like school kids (school bullies to be specific) try being a bit less horrible eh?

In fairness, when an OP starts off with the tone of "here am I, descended from upon high, with my superior knowledge to put you all to rights" and is then wrong, or is (at best) stating the bleeding obvious, then I'd say all bets are off. Her own posts aren't exactly brimming over with kindness towards those she clearly considers inferior.
TooManyPlatesInMotion · 22/12/2021 08:03

Yeah, but omicron sounds cooler. Chill.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 22/12/2021 14:16

@Ineedapuppy

Is it just me who imagines the OP reading her post out loud in a slightly patronising, tight and bemused voice - little like Delores Umbridge from Harry Potter?

“Aren’t you all silly Mums-Netters for not knowing that Omnicron is not an illness… now let’s write some lines”

I must not tell lies ⚡

By the way, I can't stop watching Love Actually, Four Weddings and When Harry Met Sally. I think I have Rom(i)-Com. BOOM BOOM.

Did the op not come back then?

Did the op not come back then?
She can’t, she’s got omicron
