Omicron is not an illness!

186 replies

CommonRoom · 21/12/2021 20:12

People on MN are claiming they have omicron, or their DH/DCs have omicron or asking if someone else has omicron. Omicron is not a virus. The virus is covid! Omicron is a variant of covid. All virus have variants. Flu has new ones all the time, but we don't use the variant name, we still call it flu.

Also, LFTs and PCRs are tests to detect COVID. In the results you will only find out if you have COVID or not. The omicron variant is something that labs and researchers can detect and they are compiling statistics about its spread but these results are not being given to individuals as a matter of course. Simple common sense would tell you this. The LFTs and PCRs that people are doing regularly are COVID tests and the results are positive/negative for COVID. There is no mention in these results of omicron.

@UnmentionedElephantDildo

The virus is covid!

No it isn't - the virus is SARS-COV2

Covid-19 is the name of the disease, named by WHO, meaning 'coronavirus disease'
www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/technical-guidance/naming-the-coronavirus-disease-(covid-2019)-and-the-virus-that-causes-it

Omicron is a variant of covid. All virus have variants

No it's the given name for the B.1.1.529 variant of SARS-COV2

Awesome post - plus, who knew wha5 a range if sizes dildos came in 😲
UniversalAunt · 21/12/2021 21:16

@LynetteScavo‘ Everyone I know who probably has omicron is tripple jabbed and living their best lift in isolation. ’

All these people on their own, going up & down in lifts, jabbing the buttons, singing along with the Muzak & checking their hair in the mirror. - living their best lift. Xmas Grin

MatildaJayne · 21/12/2021 21:17

Ooo, burned OP! Grin

CoffeeWithCheese · 21/12/2021 21:18

Covid is so 2019 - just sounds spiky, annoying, possibly green if the bad TV photoshop graphics are anything to go by.

Omicron is new, 2021 - conjures up images of flashing fighting robots with flashy bang effects. I'd be going for that.

But then I've just read a 2 week long Twitter spat arguing among phoneticians about how to pronounce omicron and which syllable of the word the stress should go on... if you can read IPA and have insomnia - can recommend.

UniversalAunt · 21/12/2021 21:20

B.1.1.529 sounds like an asteroid I might visit one day.
Once I’ve done with the Living La Vida Lifto.

Forgive me, I’ve just plunged into a festive pack of chocolate gingers & I am on 🔥.

santaclothes · 21/12/2021 21:20

I do know that if people say they have omicron they are lying because they would not have been given that information.

People are being given that information though

Thefaceofboe · 21/12/2021 21:22

Ha Grin I have to agree. People are annoying. But then again, I don’t see why anyone needs to post on social media they have covid (no matter what variant!)

Wheredidthequietgo · 21/12/2021 21:22

@AlbertBridge

I keep calling it "Omnicrom." Mistakenly. But I can't seem to stop.
do you also say alumimium? i do for some reason
Wtfdoipick · 21/12/2021 21:23

@Hospedia

Also as an FYI, if you test positive on PCR and analyse shows it is Omicron then Test and Trace notify you of this because they need a list of contacts from you, with thus variant your contacts have to isolate for ten days regardless of their vaccination status.

So yeah, people do get informed if they have Omicron or are suspected of having Omicron. People who've been a close contact who then go on to test positive can be fairly certain it's Omicron too.

The requirement for close contacts of people with the omicron variant has been dropped so test and trace no longer need to inform people when it's omicron, not much point now it's endemic ( that changed early last week I think)
LynxGiftsetAndSocks · 21/12/2021 21:24

ah so where is the OP?

cringing in the corner?

CommonRoom · 21/12/2021 21:24

@coffeewithcheese ooh an argument about which is the stressed syllable in omicron ? That sounds like my kind of fight. I'll go over to Twitter and wade in there.

Nothing quite says “Merry Christmas” like debating infectious virus nomenclature.

LynxGiftsetAndSocks · 21/12/2021 21:25

there you are op! have you been enlightened?

VincentIsLost · 21/12/2021 21:25

@CommonRoom

I am telling people things that don't know. Three people on MN today have said that they have omicron.

You can't possibly think that other people don't know that Omicron is Covid. You just can't.

You aren't telling people things they don't know at all. In fact I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone at all who didn't already know this.

Whoopsmahoot · 21/12/2021 21:27

A positive result is the presence of SARS virus particles - it cannot discern which variant. The actual disease as others have stated is COVID.

77kidsandcounting · 21/12/2021 21:27

Oh do shut up 🙄

CommonRoom · 21/12/2021 21:29

Why would I be cringing? I have repeatedly said I know nothing at all about viruses, medicine biology etc etc. and am happy to be corrected.

I was making a point (not preaching) about language rather than viruses. Very few people know for sure if they have omicron. I live in London and even knowing that 80% of infections are omicron I would not say I had omicron unless test and trace specifically told me that.

Sparklingbrook · 21/12/2021 21:30

Oh no I am getting that second hand embarrassment for someone thing again.
It's like a public service announcement gone wrong.

No you were definitely preaching. Backtracking bit now though eh

How do you pronounce it? I say it the Greek way. Mainly as the alphabet is the only thing I learnt at Greek School.

Oh-me-kron (I think)….

FTEngineerM · 21/12/2021 21:35

WHAT ABOUT PEOPLE WHO HAVE OM-NI-CRON? Huh?

Equally as enraging 😂

CommonRoom · 21/12/2021 21:36

@Sparklingbrook

It's like a public service announcement gone wrong

My OP wasn't a public service announcement, or preaching, or even in any way informed opinion because, as I have said several times, I am no expert about covid in any way, shape or form. I was simply having a chatty rant about language.

here you go op....your first post definitely preaching about the virus....no mention of 'people in London'...you were using people on mumsnet as examples!
Coughee · 21/12/2021 21:40

Well you were also saying that anyone who claims to have omicron is a liar or ignorant. It's right there in one of your earlier posts. You also claimed that there was no way that anyone could possibly know they had it. It's those 2 things that have resulted in you having your arse handed to you really rather than your 'chatty rant' about language...

shinynewapple21 · 21/12/2021 21:42
@stuntbubbles I live in London but if I tested positive I would not assume I had omicron. I would have no way of knowing.
But given that in London Omicron is now the dominant variant - chances are that it would be Omicron, particularly if they know that it was caught from recent contact (ie 2-3 days not 5 days).
