We gave our dds (ages 11 and 9) Matilda tickets for their birthdays and we have so been looking forward to it. They have never been to London before, never seen a musical before and we got front row seats and everything. And we've completely spent our xmas budget so can't afford to do anything fun tomorrow instead. I'm so sad Sad

Thinking of still going to London for a day out, seeing as we've bought the train tickets...

Good luck going to London right now. Fucking hell. Glad you're fine with catching covid, what a privilege
A hit harsh. Some of us live here! Central London is so quiet that it is probably not as risky as other areas.

@TooManyPlatesInMotion

So sorry op. I'm afraid lots of the museums and galleries are shut. I would wait until there is more fun to be had here!
I agree. If they've never been before i'd wait until they can experience more of what London has to offer. Looking at some Christmas lights and visiting a packed toy store doesn't sound like much fun.
TooManyPlatesInMotion · 21/12/2021 18:57

bit

waltzingparrot · 21/12/2021 18:57

Could you go to the Leicester Square box office and see if you can get cheap theatre tickets for something else tomorrow with the refund money you'll get.

EurghCobwebs · 21/12/2021 18:58

@TooManyPlatesInMotion Too many people living in their little suburban bubbles believe that just London has Covid at the moment... let them be ignorant and arrogant.

alphabetsoup1980 · 21/12/2021 18:59

I empathise! I booked Hamilton months ago... travelled town to London only for it to be cancelled. I then came home and have been knocked sideways with covid! I have no idea if it's from my trip to the big smoke, but who knows!

I don't think I'd go, if given the choice again! It didn't help that I walked into a huge bloody protest at Trafalger Square full of thousands of anti-vaxers with no masks on..

Covid isn't just in London. You could catch it anywhere.
Cici22 · 21/12/2021 19:00

Your husband is right. Also think about who you are doing this for, sounds like this for you not the girls. It'll probably be a crappy experience as so many places are shut due to covid. What's the point of going only to get there and have more disappointments. He's right London will be there next month. It's very high risk to go there right now.

ShepherdMoons · 21/12/2021 19:02

It's so sad, there are lots of theatres struggling at the moment unfortunately as staff are isolating with Covid.

I would still go to London to not disappoint your dcs and have a lovely time there. Even if you just do a bit of shopping and see a few sights it's a nice trip. Just wear masks and gel your hands when you are out and about.

I think if you wait until January there may be new restrictions.

FlowerArranger · 21/12/2021 19:05

I would strongly suggest that you don't go anywhere near Hamley's. Way too busy.

I'd second the suggestion of trying to get same day theatre tickets from the booth in Leicester Square.

Also, take the Number 11 and/or 9 bus for a cheap tour of some of the major sights.

The Impressionists at the National Gallery were always a favourite with my children.

And relax. Many people live in London and we just get on with it.

StrongerOrWeaker · 21/12/2021 19:05

I am with your husband. I would go another time.

BoredZelda · 21/12/2021 19:12

He says we need to protect ourselves so that we can see family at the end of the week. Apparently London will still be there in January.

He’s absolutely right. And if London is only worth visiting at Christmas, then there is always next year.

And I'm much more likely to have caught omicron from having 4year-olds in my face every day at school for the past few weeks.

But you didn’t. That doesn’t mean the risk of catching it now is any lower.

Backtomyoldname · 21/12/2021 19:12

I’d be out as I write watching The book of Mormon as it was cancelled due to the musicians having covid.

Booked tickets a while ago - we’d then recently wondered about the wisdom of going.

But they made the decision for us.

USaYwHatNow · 21/12/2021 19:13

We had our theatre tickets cancelled for a show on Thursday as most of the cast have Covid 🤦🏻‍♀️ I feel your pain.

GivenchyDahhling · 21/12/2021 19:14

We were meant to be seeing the Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House today and it was cancelled. However, we managed to get tickets at the Coliseum for today’s matinee and it was really wonderful. Plenty of tickets available. Also, had a wander around Covent Garden for an hour before and it was really very quiet - it would have been about right for a wet Wednesday in March, not 4 days until Christmas.

Muchmorethan · 21/12/2021 19:15

Personally l can't see the attraction of London. Crowded dirty streets, same shops as anywhere else.

thetinsoldier · 21/12/2021 19:16

See the lights! Regent Street, Oxford St, Carnaby St... then get a pizza at Pizza Pilgrims just off Carnaby Street.

Comefromaway · 21/12/2021 19:17

So sorry. My daughter works at a different theatre where the show has been cancelled and it’s awful. Some of her colleagues were asymptomatic, the daily tests they have to do picked up the cases.

Matilda is a wonderful show, I hope you can re-book at a later date.

inheritancetrack · 21/12/2021 19:17

Peter Pan was cancelled Saturday. We were actually in the car ☹️

JayAlfredPrufrock · 21/12/2021 19:22

Regent Street looked deserted in press photos today.

sansucre · 21/12/2021 19:30

Was in the West End earlier today, it is empty.

Pinkflipflop85 · 21/12/2021 19:50

I would still go and enjoy all of the lights.

As an aside - if you rebook matilda, don't go for front row. Those seats are awful (I talk from bitter experience!)

Calm down
PokemonGoGoGo · 21/12/2021 19:53

You couldn't pay me to go to London at the moment, there's absolutely no way I would go out of choice! If you have plans over Christmas that you don't want to cancel (or people you don't want to risk infecting), I really wouldn't go.

Username7521 · 21/12/2021 19:54

Really @sansucre we Found it busier than expected!

Come OP. We’ve had a lovely day (all outdoors).
Go ice skating. Head to Covent Garden see the decorations. leicester square market was really nice. Play some games. Head up to regent street then head to Carnaby street as they had the best lights!

Lots of tasty mulled wine and treats along the way. All outdoors.
