Omicron? Why are we calling it omnicron?

Is it me or are people adding an 'n'? Because it's easier to say?

There are two "o"s in the Greek alphabet:

Omicron: A short or "micro" "o" as in "pot"
and
Omega: A long or "mega" "o" as in a "boat".

Like a pp, I too wonder what happened I’m between delta and omicron.

Fair enough two were ruled out but what of the other, I think 8 (my Greek is a bit rusty) in between?

Did those variants happen but died?

I think they did yes.

There are a whole load of "variants of interest" such as epsilon and lambda. Omicron was he first variant since Delta to warrant the classification "variant of concern".
HesterShaw1 · 20/12/2021 18:34

Oh that's right, the Lambada variant

immersivereader · 20/12/2021 18:59

Not just me then

What's wrong with "Expresso".[/quote]
It's not expresso - it's an espresso coffee.

alongwayhome · 21/12/2021 10:01

Meant to add this link https://www.grammar.com/expressovs.._espresso

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 21/12/2021 10:03

Everything.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 21/12/2021 10:06

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

Everything.
Sorry that was to the poster who asked what’s wrong with “expresso”.
Chaotica · 21/12/2021 10:09

I thought 'omnicron' was just being used as a joke which only 0.01% of the population would have clue about - as someone upthread said, it's the variant we're all going to get or it's going to be everywhere. I've not heard anyone say 'omnicron' except in that sense. But maybe some people do think that's what it's called.

fruitbrewhaha · 21/12/2021 10:11

@CaptaNoctem

Because no one learns ancient Greek at school any more.
But it's not just ancient, they still use it now.

It's little o, like omega is big o.

Micron/mega little/big

They have an identical pronunciation.

cremeeggsonboxingday · 21/12/2021 10:16

I hadn't called it omnicron or heard anyone call it omnicron but now I've read this thread it's stuck in my head.

Also, having written omnicron 3 times it is now saved in my phone's keyboard memory.

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 21/12/2021 10:18

It's always been omnicron to me. I've always thought it sounds like a decepticon from transformers.

stakhanovite · 21/12/2021 10:20

There are two o's in the Greek alphabet: o micron = 'small o' and O mega = 'big O'

stakhanovite · 21/12/2021 10:21

Ah, @fruitbrewhaha got there before me!

marriednotdead · 21/12/2021 10:45

After fumbling with the word a couple of times when it first became discussed, dsis and I have decided that we will call it cornichon instead because we are juvenile like that Grin

WaitForTheRose · 21/12/2021 10:49

It's omnipresent?

SpinsForGin · 21/12/2021 10:53

You've got to be from oldham to get this but it's had us in hysterics.
( Oldham's local paper was called the Oldham Chronicle known as 'The Chron' and the local accent pronounces 'my' as 'mi', so it would be Oh, mi Chron.....)

Omicron? Why are we calling it omnicron?
WaitForTheRose · 21/12/2021 10:53

@SenseSphere

The same reason people say choritzo when it’s chorizo.
I've never understood how to pronounce this. Is it ChoriZo or ChoriTSo? My instinct says the former.
storkstalk · 21/12/2021 10:57

I never understand this. Read a word, if you’re unsure look up how to pronounce it. How can people be so comfortable with being incorrect? It sets my teeth on edge every time I hear someone say expresso Angry

Or hear a word, say it how you heard it.
3WildOnes · 21/12/2021 11:28

I used to work for Omnicom and I keep calling it that for some reason or a mix of the two.

Choritho!

Jarbed · 21/12/2021 14:47

My instinct says the former.

Neither. It's choriso for most Spanish speakers (with a hard s, like the first syllable in soda). And it's choritho for a sizeable number in Spain.
