There isn't going to be a need for a lockdown

Ive sat this morning and had 3 text from friends to say they have tested positive, another two texts from people with relatives that are positive.

two work colleagues are positive

with everyone isolating, their will not be a need for a lockdown as it will happen in anywise with everyone ill or isolating

DS tested positive on a LTF last night and woke up with a temp this morning - so it’s looking likely that he has it. We’ve all just been for PCRs and now isolating even though the rest of us don’t have symptoms. My dad is supposed to be coming for Christmas but can’t see that happening now.

Just heard the queen has cancelled a traditional Christmas lunch (one for the family or something). Loads of football matches are being postponed.

Tabbacus · 16/12/2021 16:04

@xxxGirlCrushxxx

2 people i work with have had the booster and are now positive

the booster, it would seems no big protection against Omicron,if thats the variant they have

worryingly, they both wear masks obsessively. How on earth have they caught it still, makes no sense

I'm not sure how many times, they don't stop you catching it but reduce serious illness. It doesn't mean vaccines offer no protection, not sure why some struggle so much with this concept.
Brokenrecord3006 · 16/12/2021 16:22

It must feel like a lot if people you know are all testing positive. I currently don't know a single person with covid and everyone is carrying on with their lives as normal. There's not much isolation going on.

the80sweregreat · 16/12/2021 17:29

I bet many won't bother with pcr tests this close to Christmas :(
I think it's just up to the individual now to decide what's best for them and to try and get a booster done.
The government have washed their hands of a lot of it ( for now anyway ) and hoping the hospitals can cope or won't become overwhelmed.
The rise in cases won't all become people in hospital. That's what they are hoping anyway

tinkywinkyshandbag · 16/12/2021 17:34

I'm not worried about Christmas per se, but I am worried about things like the shops not being open because they have no staff, I'm worried that the buses and trains won't run, that dustbins won;'t get emptied, and petrol stations won't be able to get deliveries, I'm worried about college and universities going back to online learning, I'm worried about the potential impact on my DD's and their mental health and general wellbeing, I'm worried about not being able to go to work and therefore not being able to earn any money, I'm worried about not seeing my Mum who lives abroad, I'm just fucking worried. And I am not by nature a worrier.

kickupafuss · 16/12/2021 17:36

The government is just trying to keep the anti lockdown MPs happy and save money by not providing any support for the businesses that are suffering.

I'm surprised by people saying they don't know anyone with covid at the moment - it seems rife where I am. I also think lots of people won't test now especially if they have cold symptoms.

Proudtocare98542 · 16/12/2021 17:44

@KrispyKale

It clearly hasn't hit my area yet.
I don't know of anyone at the moment but we had a lot of cases a few weeks ago. We always seem to be the last place hit by each wave.
MrsSquirrel · 16/12/2021 17:47

I agree. It's ironic because omicron symptoms are mostly like cold symptoms, sore throat, sneezing, runny nose, headache, etc.

@MrsFin

I think the government have been quite canny, in a good way. ie no enforced lockdown, but leaving it up to people's common sense as to who they should meet up with and where they should go.

Get Boosted Now!

I don't think leaving anything up to peoples common sense is a great idea when so many lack it to be honest. (To be clear, I also don't support any further lockdowns or restrictions)

Can't get boosted, unless you can wait in line for hours and risk getting turned away anyway. DH has been trying for days, he's mid 40s, has an appointment for 30th December but can't get anything sooner. No luck with walk ins and he can't take time off work for hours to stand in line. People were lining up at 7am for a centre opening at 9 near us the other day - traffic was stopped it was so busy. People were turned away as they ran out of vaccine. They've now decided to close that as the last walk in centre within 20 miles of us because of the overwhelming demand and the impact on everything else (the streets were gridlocked).

They didn't put in place the infrastructure before they announced the 'get boosted' plan.

At this rate the crowds outside the walk-ins will turn into superspreader events!

It pisses me off so much - they keep saying 'get your booster'. People want to but they can't!

Very canny - it means they don't have to help out businesses that have to close when all their bookings are cancelled like pubs and restaurants!
MamDancer · 16/12/2021 18:20

I've just had a weep. Not for myself - I'm retired, don't have to go or be anywhere- it's just the whole shitshow.

Most people had such high hopes for this Christmas.

User135644 · 16/12/2021 18:20

It's lockdown by stealth. Everyone either at home isolating or staying at home so they don't get Covid.

OldaRailer · 16/12/2021 18:23

Mam Dancer honestly I think a lot of the young ones I know of are going out and about. And I don't blame them at this point.

MamDancer · 16/12/2021 18:26

That's good for the hospitality trade at least, OldaRailer

JudyJudyJudyDench · 16/12/2021 18:30

@MrsFin not canny
Reckless
I've had to close my business, for the second Christmas.
With no financial aid at all.
NONE
Before Xmas, no income, and since I used my savings to survive this far, no savings either.
I have shop rent - mortgage 3 kids and Christmas to contend with.
And now no income.
Fucking canny

worriedatthemoment · 16/12/2021 23:15

@JudyJudyJudyDench what business do you have that you have had to close ?

JudyJudyJudyDench · 17/12/2021 15:08

@worriedatthemoment I'm a barber

worriedatthemoment · 17/12/2021 15:53

There all still open here and people using by looks of it ? Are you finding people are cancelling

mrshoho · 17/12/2021 15:57

I've just seen a post with a long list of London theatres announcing cancellations of so many shows due to illness.

Leftbutcameback · 17/12/2021 16:08

@theemperorhasnoclothes - agree re boosters. My OH booked two weeks ago for the first week in Jan. Nothing sooner (we check every day) and no walk ins around here anymore, even if he could queue for hours. Meanwhile others I know outside our area are booking this week for next. We seem to be short of the infrastructure.

ShepherdMoons · 17/12/2021 16:22

according to the WHO there is every need to be concerned about the new variant and I do think there may be a lockdown in January. We can't just sleepwalk into another disaster.

the80sweregreat · 17/12/2021 16:25

Dr David Nabbavro ( might be a wrong spelling ) from WHO was very bleak on Wednesday on sky news after the presser was aired. Of course , the 'anti everything' people were quick to point out he was talking rubbish / big agenda etc.
Leftbutcameback · 17/12/2021 16:54

I've just come back to correct my earlier post - a load of new booster slots have opened up and my OH is now booked in on Monday (and could have booked for Sunday) Grin - apparently it's because they got rid of the 15 min wait.

the80sweregreat · 17/12/2021 16:57

Another Cobra meeting coming up they said just now on the news with Nicola S and Boris Johnson :(
A friend of mine thinks there will more announcements this weekend, but not sure where she's seen this news ?
It just feels so bleak !
