France bans UK travellers

Hmm

Could we maybe stop doing so much testing in the UK so we stop reporting these case rises which makes us look worse than countries that dont test?

PS: I totally get the point of vaccination and am triple jabbed. But what's the point of the vaccine PASSES if having one makes zero difference? Now I'm triple jabbed I'm considering not getting any more boosters as you still have to mess around testing like an unvaccinated person

You do understand why we test don’t you? Don’t you understand that if we don’t test we have no idea how the virus is behaving, how infectious it is, where it is, so hotspots can be dealt with

Do you really think other countries aren’t testing?

Why do so many just seem to assume that it’s the UK doing testing, lockdowns, covid passports etc. Do you all really live in such a bubble?

Why wouldn’t France do to us what we have done to other countries?

Personally I am happy there is the testing, it gives a clearer picture on covid and where it is

If you don’t want the testing then follow the guidance, think of others and stop cases from spreading

DismantledKing · 16/12/2021 11:56

Passes are to control the spread here.

IcedPurple · 16/12/2021 11:56

Why wouldn’t France do to us what we have done to other countries?

They can do what they like but it's not going to stop them having an Omnicron wave in the next few weeks.

Cornettoninja · 16/12/2021 11:58

I don’t blame them and it seems sensible to try and buy time to deliver more boosters. We did the same to SA. I posted an article a day or so ago listing fifteen countries that had effectively banned us with restriction requirements due to Omicron.

Not testing isn’t the answer (!) in fact many countries are watching how the situation develops in the UK for evidence to back up what’s come out of SA.

People are taking these travel bans very personally, no one’s banning us because they’re not our best friend or because we’re all plague rats; it’s decisions based on the information available/unavailable.

How do passes (not vaccines, passes) control the spread?

@IcedPurple

Relations between France and Britain have been pretty tense of late, so I'm guessing this is at least in part politically motivated. It's not as if there would be tons of British tourists travelling to France over the next few weeks, so it's no great loss to their economy in return for 'being seen to do something' and scoring political points.
You might want to take the idea that not many Brits are traveling to France ATM comment over to the skiing threads and see how you get on Shock….

It’s very easy to regress back to seeing politics/Brexit/fishing licenses as the reason for this AMs decision but believe it or not the UK PMs press conferences get seen overseas. We’ve seen and heard what Mr Johnson said over the weekend, including the use of descriptions of a “tidal wave” so TBH it was an easy call to make..

So what information is available to France but not to other European countries?

This just looks like pure spite. Omicron is there, it’s everywhere.

oneglassandpuzzled · 16/12/2021 12:02

@milkyaqua

“Our strategy is to delay as much as we can the development of Omicron in our country and take advantage to push ahead with the booster drive,” the French government spokesperson Gabriel Attal said.

Seems reasonable.

I find it so odd there is not a single mention that I've seen anyway on this board of the UK recording its highest ever cases in a single day - 78,610 new cases.

The true figure is thought to be much higher - around 200,000 cases currently active... Nobody wants to import that level of problem to their country unnecessarily.

There was a lot of mention of the new cases yesterday on the data thread.

@Cornettoninja

I'm not taking the ban personally but I'm upset I will be spending Christmas without my sister because Emmanuel Macron wants to pretend theres no omicron in france and look like hes being proactive in the hope of getting re elected next year.

Obviously on a special interest thread you'll find people interested in that special interest. It doesn't mean that there are large numbers of Brits planning French holidays over the next few weeks.

It’s very easy to regress back to seeing politics/Brexit/fishing licenses as the reason for this AMs decision but believe it or not the UK PMs press conferences get seen overseas.

I don't think politics is the only reason but I very much suspect it's a factor. How many other European countries have made the same 'call'?

DismantledKing · 16/12/2021 12:05

[quote XmasSadface]@DismantledKing

By (hopefully) encouraging vaccination.
By excluding those who are unvaccinated from indoor gatherings. People who are vaccinated are less likely to develop an infection, and therefore less likely to pass it on to someone else.

What do you mean? Is Frances decision only valid if other countries do the same thing? They can make whatever choices they want for their own borders and we’re experiencing an undeniable rise in cases.

That’s what I mean about taking it personally, what more do you need than that? They’re not answerable to us.

IpanemaPeaHen · 16/12/2021 12:09

They want to buy time to get boosters in people before omicron hits France which it will.

France is more of a winter holiday destination than other EU countries or for families like ours who use it for transitioning through to visit our family. It really isn’t spite.

oneglassandpuzzled · 16/12/2021 12:10

Their ski resorts are going to take a big hit from this. The French Alps are very popular with Brits.

IcedPurple · 16/12/2021 12:10

What do you mean? Is Frances decision only valid if other countries do the same thing?

Well, you said countries have made these decisions based purely on 'information' and not at all on politics. That's why I asked what info is available to France but not to other European countries.

They can make whatever choices they want for their own borders and we’re experiencing an undeniable rise in cases.

Of course they can. And we are free to discuss it on the relevant threads.

That’s what I mean about taking it personally, what more do you need than that? They’re not answerable to us.

Who said they were? Like I said above, they can do what they like. It doesn't mean it's going to be any more effective in preventing an Omnicron wave than Britain banning travel from African countries.

notimagain · 16/12/2021 12:12

Europe doesn’t work as one on this issue (sovereignty etc) so we’ll have to wait and see.

France is perhaps more exposed to the UK situation due many European nations due to the geography and the influx of Brits who come over to ski.

XmasSadface · 16/12/2021 12:16

So Europe doesnt work as one on this but it does work as one with respect to not banning travel between EU countries?

Cases are going crazy in Ireland, doesnt this make Macron nervous?

Cornettoninja · 16/12/2021 12:17

@XmasSadface I’m sorry that it’s affected plans to see your sister, I hope that you manage to have a good Christmas otherwise and you can see her again very soon.

@IcedPurple cheers for taking the time with formatting but honestly I can’t be arsed to dissect Frances decision to the level you’re looking for. From my pov it’s very simple, we’ve got Omicron spreading rapidly through the population and they want to buy more time to deliver boosters/try to minimise their own cases. Whether they do that or not or whether other European countries follow their example is neither here or there.

grapewine · 16/12/2021 12:17

Macron isn't pretending the variant isn't there. He wants to try and slow down the spread for vaccines to catch up as much as possible. It's sensible.

FavouriteMug · 16/12/2021 12:18

It will be just as rife over there as it is here but we test pretty much anything with a pulse so of course it is going to look as if we have it much, much worse.

milkyaqua · 16/12/2021 12:19

There was a lot of mention of the new cases yesterday on the data thread.

There was a lot of delicate skirting around it.
