France bans UK travellers

Hmm

Could we maybe stop doing so much testing in the UK so we stop reporting these case rises which makes us look worse than countries that dont test?

PS: I totally get the point of vaccination and am triple jabbed. But what's the point of the vaccine PASSES if having one makes zero difference? Now I'm triple jabbed I'm considering not getting any more boosters as you still have to mess around testing like an unvaccinated person

Not surprised, soon most of the world will close their doors to us and with good reason. We seem very keen to tell the world that we are covid infested plague pit! British exceptionalism at it's very finest, even the omicron variant must be different here and clearly doomed to kill all of us by Christmas day.

Flowerlane · 16/12/2021 11:14

Had this conversation a lot this week with many people, we all agreed that our media makes us look bad by the way they are reporting every tiny little thing. Also agreed that we are testing too much.

The media is not only making us look bad all around the world it scares the vulnerable people here.

Hizz · 16/12/2021 11:18

They should look at the death rate
7 day average to 15th Dec UK 115
7 day average to 15th Dec France 136

Viviennemary · 16/12/2021 11:20

And even reporting deaths. Because somebody has covid withiin 30 days of death then they are included in the covid death statistics. Its madness. Its like saying somebody wiith terminal cancer with a common cold died of a cold. Sorry if this is insensitive but its really wrong.

This works both ways. Lots of people die of covid after 30 days and aren't counted.
DismantledKing · 16/12/2021 11:25

I believe it’s not just targeted at the UK; it applies to any country outside the EU.

XmasSadface · 16/12/2021 11:28

@DismantledKing
Why though? The virus doesnt distinguish?

Those are the rules implemented, so it’s nothing to do with how much testing the UK is doing. We’re not in the EU, so these new rules apply.

I don't think they are allowed to ban travel from fellow EU countries but they can the rest of world.

MissAmbrosia · 16/12/2021 11:33

It's specific to UK.

MissAmbrosia · 16/12/2021 11:34

And EU countries can put similar restrictions in place for other EU countries if it is considered necessary.

DismantledKing · 16/12/2021 11:34

Ah, ok. I’m wrong then; I thought I’d read something earlier today but I must have misunderstood.
user478843898 · 16/12/2021 11:34

Not surprised with the attitude we have to covid but I don’t think this is targeted specifically to the UK it’s non-EU countries

milkyaqua · 16/12/2021 11:39

“Our strategy is to delay as much as we can the development of Omicron in our country and take advantage to push ahead with the booster drive,” the French government spokesperson Gabriel Attal said.

Seems reasonable.

I find it so odd there is not a single mention that I've seen anyway on this board of the UK recording its highest ever cases in a single day - 78,610 new cases.

The true figure is thought to be much higher - around 200,000 cases currently active... Nobody wants to import that level of problem to their country unnecessarily.

HeatonGrove · 16/12/2021 11:39

Like UK, France wants to delay and flatten the Omicron wave until they have more data.
Like UK, France has left it too late.
Macron, like Johnson, can score political points through this.
Can you imagine what Patel and Co would be saying and doing re the French if the Omicron wave had first taken off in France?

Delatron · 16/12/2021 11:40

Just like S.Africa we get penalised for our sequencing and testing.

The horse is so far out of the stables... good luck to them.

I just feel for all those whose travel plans have been ruined again.

Notonthestairs · 16/12/2021 11:40

Did we not ban South African travellers?

Tommika · 16/12/2021 11:41

More testing doesn’t make more cases - it identifies cases

Take tests and submit the results - more negative tests lowers the rate

Positive results identify for confirm cases, and regular LFTs or LFTs before going somewhere or after having gone somewhere can reduce further transmission

vera99 · 16/12/2021 11:42

Oh yeah do less testing that old canard.

Aderyn21 · 16/12/2021 11:43

There are better countries to go to than France so 🤷‍♀️.

Tbh though, if the world had banned all non essential travel and imposed proper quarantine then we wouldn't be up shit creek now. But no, people felt entitled to foreign holidays and now we have to spend every Christmas fearing lockdown and collapse of essential services!
Pointless of France to ban UK if allowing travel with other countries - the horse has already bolted. France has omicron, it probably also has less testing

WonderfulYou · 16/12/2021 11:50

I think it’s an excellent idea.
If only we did this when cases were rising in China at the very beginning.

IpanemaPeaHen · 16/12/2021 11:50

Can hardly blame them given the current level of Omicron in UK. We have family in France/Netherlands and we have had to change our plans again. I think we will rebook for Easter.

IcedPurple · 16/12/2021 11:52

Relations between France and Britain have been pretty tense of late, so I'm guessing this is at least in part politically motivated. It's not as if there would be tons of British tourists travelling to France over the next few weeks, so it's no great loss to their economy in return for 'being seen to do something' and scoring political points.

Delatron · 16/12/2021 11:53

They’ll be in the same situation as us though in about 2 weeks. Given how transmissible Omicron is. A travel ban won’t stop the spread. See S.Africa travel ban.

XmasSadface · 16/12/2021 11:55

Travel bans have never stopped any kind of spread so why are they still dicking around with them 2 years later?

And again what are the point of passes then?
