Household case - how long did it take for other members to catch it?

Hi,

Our DS (3) tested positive on Friday completely asymptomatic. Both me and DH tested negative but obviously have been unable to isolate from him.

Just looking for experience in how long it took for it to go around households if at all as were really hoping not to be in isolation for Christmas Day 😫

I know 4 kids that have had it and no one else in the family caught it. Also know 2 adults that had it and no one else caught it. They weren't isolating in a room either.

tinkerbellvspredator · 12/12/2021 23:14

@Locomelon

Do you not just assume the negatives in the household are false negatives? I've heard so many cases of only a few in the household testing positive and I just don't get it. When we had it, 3 of us tested positive (me, DH, DD2) but DD1 was negative. I just assumed she hadn't stuck the thing far enough up her nose and isolated her as if she had it too??
Not in our case. We were signed up to research and had a daily PCR test (and hand swab, and salive test) for 14 days after DD tested positive and didn't get it. Didn't distance from her or change anything. Had been vaccinated before she got it.

DS got it 6 weeks later (so not from DD) and we didn't get it from him either, although only 1 PCR that time.

Notdoingthis · 12/12/2021 23:23

None of us did.

WhatsitWiggle · 12/12/2021 23:25

It didn't! Only DD tested positive, DH and I both remained negative, and we weren't isolating her or avoiding contact in any way.

jackstini · 12/12/2021 23:30

Dd on a Monday
Me and DH on the Wednesday
Ds never got it!

rainydogday · 12/12/2021 23:30

I am in exactly the same position! DS tested positive on LF on Thursday and PCR on Friday. I am triple vaccinated from Oct (nhs) but DH only had his on Monday..... DS and DD both had their first jab the day before he tested positive! Typical. We are managing to keep him in his room as desperately wanting to spend Christmas with family this year. If DD gets it we won't be going anywhere! I have been cleaning like a mad woman!

CovidMakesThingsHarder · 12/12/2021 23:33

Friend took 14 days. Just her and her DH in the house, they isolate dtovether she he got ill and she didn’t leave the house as it was 2020 and then the weekend.

CeriBerry · 12/12/2021 23:36

My boyfriend’s positive PCR was on a Monday (came back on the Tuesday) and mine was on the Friday, so four days. I’m fairly certain it definitely was four days too as I had a PCR on the Monday and the Wednesday (had a cold before I got Covid) and both were negative but Friday’s was positive.

chipshopElvis · 13/12/2021 06:40

Nov 2020 DH had it very mildly and we isolated him, no one else got it.

Last Tuesday DS (12) tested positive hasn't been very ill but hasn't been isolatingwithin the house. Dd (10) tested positive on LF on Saturday waiting for pcr results but neither DH (double vacc) or me (vacc x2 and boosted) have any symptoms.

Our close friends had similar. Oldest child tested positive, mum and younger child positive 4 days later, husband 5 days later adults both double jabbed.

martim · 13/12/2021 06:44

DS2 got it on a Monday, DH and I developed symptoms the following Tuesday and had positive PCRs. Both did LFTs daily and these were always negative. DS1 did it catch it but he had it a year ago.

toomanypillows · 13/12/2021 06:51

DS (12) had it in September, but DD, DH and I didn't catch it. We all took LF tests daily and DH and I both had 2 negative PCR tests.
DS stayed away from us as much as he could, but we genuinely thought we would also get it.

Franticbutterfly · 13/12/2021 06:58

We didn't catch it from our DD, although her symptoms were very very mild.

dollywoodlooksgood · 13/12/2021 07:04

DD had it a couple of weeks ago and DH and I didn’t get it. She was asymptomatic too. We did daily LF tests and 4 PCRs each.

dollywoodlooksgood · 13/12/2021 07:04

PS good luck and I hope you don’t get it 🙂

rainbowandglitter · 13/12/2021 07:08

Dsd had it and nobody else in the house caught it.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 13/12/2021 07:21

@Wellbythebloodyhell

Ds had it, no one else in the house went on to test positive and we carried on as normal at home with one another
Same, though we did make DS eat his dinner on the sofa! He did have symptoms though. He shares a room with his brother and even he didn't catch it.
Dontforgetyourbrolly · 13/12/2021 07:24

We were staying at my mums for the weekend when ds came down with it so ended up staying there for 10 days
I caught it my mum didn't- no distancing or isolating within the home .
A couple of weeks later she caught it, either somewhere else or residual from us . It's everywhere, the best case scenario is everyone to catch it together and get it over and done with!

noscoobydoodle · 13/12/2021 07:29

DD tested positive on Sat, DH on wednesday, DD2 on Thursday and me and DS on following Saturday. Me and DH are double jabbed. All have symtpoms (except DS who is 1) but so far very much like a bad head cold and fatigue for us all and DD has a cough (she is also asthmatic but so far not causing too much of a problem).

Chunks1376 · 13/12/2021 10:47

Got some cold symptoms this morning 😩

@Chunks1376
How did you get on with regards to LFTs?
I too have put a similar post up and dreading isolating Christmas!
DS (3) tested positive on LFT last Monday confirmed Tuesday by PCR.
DS (7) tested positive (very faint) on LFT Friday confirmed Saturday by PCR.
Just finishing day 7 for my youngest and day 4 for my eldest.
Me and DP still total negatives on LFT
Got a PCR tomorrow had two negatives last week.

Chunks1376 · 13/12/2021 22:14

All our LFTs have been negative including DS who PCR positive.

I’ve been for a PCR today (day 3) since he tested positive as I have a bad cold all day. Awaiting results.

@Chunks1376
I do wonder about these LFTs!!
Let us know your results 🤞

insatiableme · 13/12/2021 22:21

When my son had covid no one caught it. And my daughters caught it around 6 months later from school, no one else caught. But I have been super cautious around cleaning steaming everything handled etc and hand washing. They had to wear masks to come downstairs etc . I don't know if this helped massively.

insatiableme · 13/12/2021 22:22

I understand your child is only 3 totally different circumstances op

Yesthatscorrect · 13/12/2021 22:42

I'm in the same position. Son aged 13 tested positive on pcr on Sunday. He had symptoms from Thursday but tested negative on lateral flow. Glad we took him for a pcr, we all got tested and he was the only positive.
He's been holed up in his room for a whole day now. Only leaving to use the bathroom. He cleans with antibacterial spray when he uses it. All meals are left outside his room. Not sure how long he can keep this up but I read that the most infectious time is before the symptoms and three days after they start.
We are both triple jabbed. Youngest son is just keeping away.
