Which booster after 2 x Astra Z?

71 replies

Valaris · 12/12/2021 20:48

I'm 31. I'm double jabbed. Both jabs were AstraZeneca (1st one in March, second one in June)

I saw in the newspaper that having two jabs of AZ gives 0 protection against Omicron. (I'll try and find the article and I'll link it)

Which is the best vaccine to get after two AZ for max protection? After the news tonight, I'm going to go to a walk in centre for a booster tomorrow.

I had 2 x Moderna already - would I be offered Moderna again or Pfizer this time? Or just whatever they have available.
Doesn't really matter, just curious.

dapsnotplimsolls · 12/12/2021 21:14

Pfizer, no choice.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 12/12/2021 21:17

@Theredjellybean

There isn't a menu to choose from... ☺ You get what is being used that day. I've had people holding up the queue as they ask what vaccines are on offer, say they don't want this one or that one.. I've lost patience I'm afraid now... I don't have time to stand and explain all the science again..
We only give Pfizer at the clinic I work at, though I only ever get a couple of people querying it each session and they're usually happy with the explanation that it's more effective than AZ as a booster. I never mention Moderna and thankfully no one ever asks!

Whatever they have.

@BubblingRiver that's not quite right - it was reported that AZ offered less than 10% protection from symptomatic omicron, but it was expects that there was higher protection against severe illness.(but sample sizes so small and given the gap between infection and severe illness / hospitalisation they were not able to confirm on the percentage as yet)

Whitefire · 12/12/2021 21:32

Dh and 1 both had AZ as the first jabs. He had Pfizer, I had Moderna. At the clinic I went to they were offering Pfizer as well, I am not sure how they decided - whether it was the table you were at or age - the two young people at the next table were given Pfizer.

showmethemoneyplease · 12/12/2021 21:32

You don't get a choice. I've just had Moderna.

howdiditcometothis666 · 12/12/2021 21:38

@BubblingRiver "close to zero protection" is incorrect. Sadly it is being spread all round the place. AZ and Pfizer should both provide protection again serious illness.

hajaumkih · 12/12/2021 21:45

I had Moderna booster after two Pfizer, my partner had Moderna booster after two AZ. We didn't have a choice, it was just what was available on the day.

Cookerhood · 12/12/2021 21:48

The AZ scaremongering is simply that. It was based on very small numbers as not many people in South Africa have had AZ and the authors stated that it was unreliable data. It still have protection against serious disease etc.

2kool4skool · 12/12/2021 22:03

JCVI recommend Pfeizer after 2x AZ but say Moderna is ok too.
But the clear recommendation is Pfeizer.
I had mine yesterday and they were v reluctant to give me Pfeizer. Had to argue for it. Got it in the end.

sanityisamyth · 12/12/2021 22:04

@Flapjacker48

You get what the centre is giving at that time - pfizer or moderna.

This. I had Moderna after 2 AZ jabs.

2kool4skool · 12/12/2021 22:04

Elsewhere they say likely to have less reaction to Pfeizer than moderna

FreeBritnee · 12/12/2021 22:04

I didn't know the booster was a half dose.

GoodTid · 12/12/2021 22:09

You do get a choice! I also had a choice with my 1st (Jan) and 2nd initial vaccines. I get sick and tired of people saying everyone doesn't get a choice.

2kool4skool · 12/12/2021 22:11

Well I got NO choice with jabs 1 and 2. AZ or nothing. I even asked my GP and was told I was only getting AZ, no discussion

There was no choice at my drop in centre for booster jabs. The man in front of me wanted Moderna, they were administering Pfizer. He was told he could return tomorrow by which time they would have had a delivery but they didn't know which it would be in any case.

gogohm · 12/12/2021 22:18

@GoodTid

I can assure you I didn't get a choice. When I had my initial vaccine they had ax and Pfizer, you only got Pfizer if you were a health/care worker in for jab 2, everyone else including my 21 year old got az (March). This time I got moderna, they had nothing else on-site

GoodTid · 12/12/2021 22:38

I'm sure some don't get a choice, but some people go on (and on) about no-one getting a choice, and that just isn't true.

greenlynx · 12/12/2021 22:44

Both DH and I got Moderna after 2 jabs of A-Z . I didn’t feel that the choice was available. Ours were booked appointments maybe you could choose at walk-in centre.

yourestandingonmyneck · 12/12/2021 23:02

Is it only Modena or Pfizer? Is AZ not being given as a booster dose?

Cookerhood · 12/12/2021 23:03

@yourestandingonmyneck

No it isn't. The study (CovBoost) showed that the mRNA vaccines were better as boosters.
