Omicron not omni

ColettesEarrings · 11/12/2021 09:54

I don't know the person personally iyswim, but there's a confirmed case in the sixth form at our y11 son's school. Relevant students and staff are isolating in accordance with the new guidelines. It's caused chaos in terms of having to switch to immediate virtual learning for a number of subject classes.

oh

Yes I live in South Africa in Gauteng and know lots of people with COVID so pretty sure quite a few will have Omicron.
Most have it very mild, like a mild cold, bit of a headache and that’s it.
My 13 year old tested positive yesterday, he’s not vaccinated he had very swollen glands, tired (due to lack of oxygen said the drs) sore throat but he’s up and about.
No one else in the household has any symptoms, my husband has a mild cough, we are both double vaxxed with Pfizer, my youngest is not vaxxed and is not showing any symptoms at all.

MsNorris · 11/12/2021 11:28

I contacted everyone my son had close contact with in the free days before he tested positive and none are doing any symptoms although most of them had Delta in our third wave.
Whatever they say - the vaccines and previous immunity are definitely keeping this mild.

Sinnia · 11/12/2021 11:33

Yes.

Triple vaccinated and previous covid positive. Not unwell although lost sense of taste and smell

itwasntaparty · 11/12/2021 11:34

Yes at school - two classes sent home yesterday to isolate until negative PCRs

Frazzled2207 · 11/12/2021 11:37

I really hope the stories of it being milder than delta hold up as the numbers grow.
Dh currently poorly with delta (we assume) and really not looking forward to part 2 in the new year.

Eightandahalfyears · 11/12/2021 11:39

Nope. Not any other strain of Covid at the moment. In fact, I work in a busy nightclub and since we reopened the only member of staff to catch Covid was the unvaccinated one.

SleevedOff · 11/12/2021 11:48

Yes. Apparently it's still suspected omicron despite them sending a special kit 2 weeks ago to detect it (results haven't come back yet).

We've had calls from people based in track and trace and well as a London based coronavirus response cell and everyone has been tested but we are still being told it's suspected.

Mild symptoms. Runny nose, slight cough that stopped within 2 days, bunged up stuffy feeling and no loss of smell or taste at all.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 11/12/2021 12:40

Yes, a work colleague. Very mild, headache and slight cough.

Valhalla17 · 11/12/2021 12:43

Nope, not a soul

@MsNorris Are any of those people elderly?
Lucked · 11/12/2021 13:16

Out of interest how do you find out it is omnicron? Does this info come after the positive test and how are people informed?

blablablack · 11/12/2021 13:23

Yes my sister has it and her child is being tested now too. We are central Scotland. She'd triple vaxxed 🙄 Parents are having to isolate now as they had contact with her.

For her it's just been a very bad cold.

blablablack · 11/12/2021 13:24

@Lucked You'll get a a positive result and then they send it for further testing so can take another couple of days for it to be confirmed.

Prisonbreak · 11/12/2021 13:29

I am positive just now and I’ve been trying to find out if it’s Omicron or not. I keep getting the same answer….. ‘oh we don’t know’

dropitlikeitsloth · 11/12/2021 13:32

Yes me (possibly, the PCR came back saying possibly Omicron)

Vaccinated twice. Feeling pretty rough but ok. Weird symptoms such a night sweats, sneezing loads, sponges teeth, dulled sense of smell and taste but still there and a feeling of disorientation.

dropitlikeitsloth · 11/12/2021 13:34

This is how I’m assuming it’s Omicron. Once I registered the PCR on the NHS app I had this:

do you know anyone with omnicron?
Cookerhood · 11/12/2021 13:39

The omicrom (no "n") has an s gene dropout which can be seen on some PCRs (I think it depends on the lab), so they have a pretty good idea that if it has an s gene dropout it is omicrom. This was how alpha was originally spotted but there's virtually none of that now - before omicrom came along there were very few sample (I think Whitty said 0.1%?) but that percetage is rising. I'm assuming suspected cases will be sequenced to check, and a certain percentage of other samples are sequenced too.

MsNorris · 11/12/2021 13:43

@Boosterquery no I don’t know any elderly people, all people from work so mainly 30s and 40s.
We have low vax rates and we don’t have boosters here so a lot will be unvaccinated though

Frazzled2207 · 11/12/2021 13:50

@dropitlikeitsloth

This is how I’m assuming it’s Omicron. Once I registered the PCR on the NHS app I had this:
I had no idea we were to register pcrs on the nhs app. I don’t think that message suggests you have omicron just says it’s possible as only 20% of cases are sequenced. None of the literature regarding self isolation makes it clear that most people are actually exempt.
dropitlikeitsloth · 11/12/2021 14:08

I had no idea we were to register pcrs on the nhs app.

@Frazzled2207 Nor did I. I literally got pestered by text (3 texts in an hour) asking me to do it.

I could be wrong about it being the MHS App. All I know is I clicked a link went to an NHS site and logged it. Might have been track and trace. I can’t actually think straight at the moment ☺️

dropitlikeitsloth · 11/12/2021 14:10

The omicrom (no "n")

Isn’t it Omicron? It’s Omicron in Greek.

Pinkflipflop85 · 11/12/2021 14:14

Yes. I had it confirmed.

Plus 17 other members of staff at school and 10 children (that we know of).
