Do we think gyms and pools will close again?

Or just go to restricted numbers?

Gym and swim keeps me going in the winter. It's too dark outside to run at this time of year.

I would bet < 30% chance they will close before 8 Jan. Best I can do.

DirtyDancing · 10/12/2021 18:53

I just can't see it. As long as there are timed sessions. But let's wait and see in Jan!

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 10/12/2021 18:55

I totally loved the restricted numbers stuff, so sort of hope that happens.

TheRealMrsMorningstar · 10/12/2021 18:58

They better bloody not. My little one is doing gymnastics and dance and swimming classes and I do adult gymnastics. I will be gutted 😢

(Same for schools)

As someone who’s livelihood depends on gyms I really really hope they don’t.

So many gyms are at breaking point, if you like a less people when you work out join a more exclusive gym rather than hoping for further restrictions which will hamstring peoples jobs.

FanGirlX · 10/12/2021 19:03

I was so depressed last Jan to March because they were shut.

Tbh I think they know they can't lock us down again.

The economy and the people can't take it. Plus if they can have a Christmas party last year, I can, as a fully vaccinated adult, can go to the fucking gym!

Toadsinholes · 10/12/2021 19:15

Only if they bring back furlough - it’s a huge industry. My guess is no, they won’t - there was a massive outcry about it last year, and I don’t think there’s any justification anyway.
Let people make their own minds up now (please! I need my spin classes!)

SivvyPlath · 10/12/2021 19:17

I feel safer in the gym then shops and supermarkets. Everyone social distances (nobody goes onto the treadmill next to you for example), lots of antibac spray for equipment, spacious with good ventilation.

I hope not.

I always thought closing gyms to save the NHS was one of the most short sighted policies of them all. No idea what will happen but I’d hope that they would take into account the decline on fitness in the population and increase in obesity when considering it.

FanGirlX · 10/12/2021 20:34

I need my spin classes!

I didn't realise until last year how much exercise positively affects my mental health. I turned into a miserable sloth.

I forget that tongue in cheek is not a thing on MN.

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 10/12/2021 21:15

Well I’ve bought a new kettlebell for possible zoom classes.

I let my fitness go down the drain for the majority of the pandemic so working in my plan B already.

Caroline Girvan will become my best friend too.

fakereview · 10/12/2021 21:17

Has anyone actually caught covid in a gym or swimming pool?

Katie517 · 10/12/2021 21:20

I really hope not! Closing an industry that relieves pressure on the NHS and does wonders for people both mentally and physically would be idiotic, like before when they kept McDonald’s open but closed the swimming pools. The gym is my sanity and even more so in winter when it’s not safe to run outside before or after work.

furballfun · 10/12/2021 21:21

Has anyone actually caught covid in a gym or swimming pool?

Sadly, yes. A friend did last year - four of them who'd been to the gym went down in close succession (she had the track and trace app). That doesn't mean I think they should close.

It’s actually really upsetting to read such a thing, for those in the industry. The guidance was awful and we were always last to know real details. We lost clients, money, jobs, and our own fitness.
PollyPoppins2 · 10/12/2021 21:22

No please do not close the gym/ pool. Keeps me sane!

HangingDitch · 10/12/2021 22:06

I bloody hope not, I’ve just paid my personal trainer for the next block of sessions.

Yes! I was almost 12.5 stone in March, and restarted swimming on the 12th April, as soon as possible. When I eventually caught covid in October, I had lost 1.5 stone and was physically so much in a better place to fight it, and recover from it. As well as getting my booster, physical health (and mental health) are just as important, as it will be to others.
Newmum738 · 10/12/2021 22:58

Hope not! Think most things will stay open. I can't see furlough coming back.

Wakemeuuuup · 10/12/2021 23:31

I really hope not. Swimming is the only thing that keeps my excruciating back and leg pain remotely in check
