Why won’t so many Brits wear a mask

I live in mainland Spain where I haven’t seen a single person without a mask in a supermarket since March 2020. I hear it’s the same in Germany and Italy. What is it about so many British people that makes them not do it when it’s clearly safer. I returned to the UK for a visit and found it horrifying. I was even looked at with disdain for wearing one! I just don’t get it!

And as I said on another thread, nobody messes with the Spanish police.

OhWhyNot · 11/12/2021 15:51

It needs to become law with high fines

Most of us will comply

Covid passports vast majority will comply (they did in France they will here)

Give people choices many will choose what is best for themselves especially in countries where individualism is celebrated

I’m so fed up hearing about how I don’t like to wear a mask so I don’t 🙄 no one likes wearing them we just get on with it

Draggondragon · 11/12/2021 15:56

It's saved me a fortune in lip fillers here in the Me where we all wear them

Spikeyball · 11/12/2021 16:00

"I’m so fed up hearing about how I don’t like to wear a mask so I don’t 🙄 no one likes wearing them we just get on with it"

I don't mind. It keeps my face warm.

Ds cannot wear one but you would rarely see him in supermarket or anywhere else with lots of people because he can't cope with that either.

minisoksmakehardwork · 11/12/2021 16:09

Given wearing them all day gave me facial eczema which was sore, weeping and bleeding - infected resulting in several courses of antibiotics, despite changing them hourly and wearing soft cotton ones to avoid rubbing. my gp advised I stopped wearing them as he wouldn't be willing to prescribe me antibiotics long term for something which was preventable.

I wore one when I had to visit my dying father in hospital and by the time I left a few hours later, my eczema had flared up and was beginning to weep.

But I still socially distance other than with family and sanitise with alcohol free sanitiser. Again, eczema and alcohol based sanitisers do not mix.

It's not a case of not wanting to for me, but the impact is for me, higher than catching covid is. I've been jabbed, had a mild dose of covid and take care.

@milly74

little evidence bit tatty cloth actually does much a symbol of the restrictions on our lives for nearly 2 years with little hope of freedom
Oh, give over. This is grossly insulting to people in countries where they actually do suffer restrictions on their freedom.
OhWhyNot · 11/12/2021 16:16

Yeah wearing a mask really impacts on our freedoms Hmm

CouncilHousedAndViolentBaby · 11/12/2021 16:49

@skintasabint

So much name calling on this thread.
This 100%
DontTellThemYourNamePike · 11/12/2021 17:07

That sounds very uncomfortable @minisoksmakehardwork and I don't think anyone would or should expect you to suffer in this way. Sadly, people who don't wear masks simply because it represents some sort of assault on their personal freedom, are making it more difficult for people like you who have a genuine reason for not wearing one.

I wish people were just generally more considerate of others. Yesterday in Sainsburys, I found myself walking into the spray produced by some idiot who was coughing away with no mask on. I don't even care if it wasn't Covid - and it might have been - but could he not have worn a mask for 30 minutes in a supermarket instead of spreading his germs to all and sundry? I heard him barking quite a few times before I saw him and couldn't believe he wasn't covering his face. Maybe he was exempt, but it would have been nice if he had kept his cough at home for a day or two, especially given the current situation.

@Prescottdanni123

Since mask wearing in shops etc was made mandatory again, I have only seen a few ppl not wearing one. And you now have to have proof that you are exempt from mask wearing or you can be fined on 1st offence. Which will have stopped some of the piss takers.
Can you provide a link please which shows that proof is now required please? Just read the government guidance which was last updated yesterday and no mention of this change?

It seems the complete opposite tbh. People who don't want to wear masks are just getting on with it, not wearing their masks. It is certain mask wearers who seem obsessed with what other people are doing and scrutinising their actions and questioning the validity of their reasons...name calling, demanding, demeaning etc.
And I say that as a mask wearer. I just don't think I am entitled to judge other people or demand they explain themselves to me. (Neither are you BTW)

BlaBlaSmthSmth · 11/12/2021 18:25

That's not true though is it. The people who are making it difficult are those who feel they're entitled to judge other people in any way.

Marks & Spencer food hall today. Two adult women and four children in a small shop, only one of the adults wearing a mask under her nose. FFS. And literally no one from the shop asking them to leave or conform.

Why should shop staff on minimum wage have to confront people, though?
liltreasuretree · 11/12/2021 19:08

I went to M&S yesterday and Aldi today. In both stores there was hardly anyone wearing masks and that includes staff too.
I started to question myself whether it's actually mandatory to wear a mask as nobody else seems to be complying.

Why are you paying such close attention to other customers though? Just get on with your own shopping.

I can't believe the amount of nosy bastards out there 🤣 Jesus, I went in a few shops and a leisure centre today and couldn't tell you what any of the countless other families were wearing/doing. Just mind your own beeswax and get on with your day.

Does it matter? You do as you wish and never mind what others are doing!.
vera16 · 11/12/2021 19:30

Is Spain doing much better than the UK with all thiat mask wearing?

A580Hojas · 11/12/2021 19:30

Wearing masks in shops is now compulsory. Who else is going to enforce it if not shop staff? Most have a security guard who could do it. We should be back to limited numbers in shops, queuing outside and only 1 adult allowed in to shop.

A580Hojas · 11/12/2021 19:32

Bollocks to "never mind what others are doing". So inane. I've just spent the day cancelling 3 Christmas events I was going to. When are people going to wake up?

liltreasuretree · 11/12/2021 19:35

No I don't suppose it does matter @Topseyt until I'm the one nursing them when they are hospitalised

A580Hojas · 11/12/2021 19:36

I really am so fucked off with the fuckwits on this issue. Just wear the fucking mask.

Stopsnowing · 11/12/2021 19:36

Because people are allowed to claim exemptions. The system needs to be changed so they have to get a card from their Gp.

Cyrilgoggin · 11/12/2021 19:37

My bus (London) this afternoon. 12 adults, 4 not wearing masks. People really don't care as I can't believe 33% were exempt.....
