I had to nip to the supermarket and town yesterday for a few bits and there was literally no difference with the number of people wearing masks compared to last week 😬😬😬

Good!

Wingingthis · 01/12/2021 06:10

Everyone was wearing masks near me, apart from about 3 people, 2 of which had a lanyard!
Last week virtually no one (including myself) was wearing a mask

Aimee1987 · 01/12/2021 06:19

Went into morrisons, the guy in front of me wasnt wearing a mask so the security man stood by the door held out a box of masks for him to wear one.
Most people in the shops were wearing them. Also work in a uni, in the cafe none were wearing but they were told they had to in teaching areas and complied.
On a side note the information is looking promising on a lower disease severity while being highly infectious so fingers crossed this is the disease becoming more mild which could very much be the end of the pandemic.

glitterelf · 01/12/2021 06:23

Popped to Sainsbury's last night and everyone was wearing a mask. There was a member of staff handing out masks to anyone who didn't have one.

fortheloveofallthings · 01/12/2021 06:26

To be fair our local Tesco has always been full of mask wearers. Maybe the odd few who weren't but probably 95% wearing them, even before the change on Tuesday.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/12/2021 06:29

Up from less than 50% to around 80-90%.

However with no change in signage or announcements, its difficult to know if those who weren't were genuine exemptions, didn't know or wilfully ignoring the change in rules.

AcceptableFox · 01/12/2021 06:47

Popped to Tesco express and everyone (around 10 people) was wearing a mask except for one man!

Treaclepie19 · 01/12/2021 07:09

I saw me and one other customer wearing a mask. The staff were also. Nobody else.

AlexandraEiffel · 01/12/2021 07:17

Every single person I saw in my local supermarket was. Up from about 30%. Everyone bar two on my train carriage was, up from about 20%.

Sparklingbrook · 01/12/2021 07:19

Went to Waitrose and didn’t see anybody without a mask either customers or staff.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/12/2021 09:47

Local Morrisons yesterday was up from maybe 20% to 80%+.

It's interesting how levels of mask wearing differs so much between areas.

Our local town has dwindled to just about nothing recently, to the extent that you feel like everyone is looking at you when you wear one.

I went in another branch of Morrisons about an hour away a few weeks ago, and it was more like 50/50. The Waitrose at the other side of my city was about 70% recently.

In October I flew out of both Manchester and Liverpool airports. At Manchester probably at least 90% wearing masks, at Liverpool, maybe 10%, no-one put them on until they got to the plane steps Hmm. I remembered just as I got to the terminal and had to start fishing about in my pockets to find it and when I got inside and saw that almost no-one had masks on, I felt a bit like 'well why did I bother with that then'.

ColinTheKoala · 01/12/2021 09:49

I didn't go yesterday but I did go on Monday and there were more people wearing masks than there had been last week. So even before it was a legal requirement they were wearing them. However, I only went into two shops and one was Superdrug which counts as a medical facility anyway as it has a pharmacy.

LittlestLightOnTheXmasTree · 01/12/2021 09:51

Our staff were handing masks out at the door gently reminding customers ( no time to print up new signage yet)

Aspidistra1 · 01/12/2021 09:54

Went into town yesterday. Probably about 80% mask wearing. Little difference from the last few weeks but live in a part of the UK where they have remained mandatory throughout.

Visiting England in the last few months has felt noticeably different than home. I’m not sure we can say there’s been a huge difference in outcomes but it does seem like there’s a lot of regional variation.

Vinorosso74 · 01/12/2021 09:55

Lots more people were wearing masks. I went to pur local Waitrose and all the staff were them which was the opposite to previous weeks where none were. It was quiet but very few non mask wearers, although so many people still can't wear them properly.

SlurpleThePurple · 01/12/2021 09:55

Went to my nearest large city and the majority were wearing masks. Same on the train too.

Vinorosso74 · 01/12/2021 09:56

*were wearing

BogRollBOGOF · 01/12/2021 10:04

I went shopping with a cap pulled down so I didn't have to look at face level.
Fortunately no tannoys and extra signage to ramp up the anxiety.

I was done on trying to cover my face in January when the panic attacks/ overwhelm escalated to the point of shredding my face to bleeding.

Thankfully no one said anything and I didn't need to pull the lanyard out.

I do not want to return to fearing having to buy food each week incase some self-appointed righteous Covid-police type is rude enough to say something to me. For dietry reasons I have to buy across different supermarkets and buying online isn't viable.

Hopefully people will just let each other go about their business this time, and the mask rules can be quickly dropped before too many end up blowing around and stuck in hedges/ around wildlife.

alborana · 01/12/2021 10:14

I went shopping in a local shopping centre yesterday. Previously mask wearing was almost at 0, I would estimate yesterday about 70% in shops, although a lot of people not wearing them properly. So a definite change.

In M&S food hall about half of the staff had them round their chins.

It was late afternoon when I was shopping and there are always lots of teenagers about in groups in the shopping centre, after school. None wear masks - I'm not sure if they are required to in England but it seems a bit bizarre if not. I'm talking 14-18 year olds? Mind you, it seems pointless that they would have to wear them in M&S but not McDonalds!

AuntieMarys · 01/12/2021 10:19

3 out of 4 staff in local Tesco not wearing them yesterday. I'm not interested if they do or don't

bowlingalleyblues · 01/12/2021 10:24

Local Sainsbury’s had staff on the door reminding people to put their masks on. Does anyone know who is able to dish out the £200 fines? Is that local authorities or only police?

Flowerlane · 01/12/2021 11:15

I popped to a large store yesterday and I would say it was only 20% wearing masks and 80% not! I double checked my phone as I thought I had the wrong day for it to come back in.

TempsPerdu · 01/12/2021 11:19

I find it’s really variable depending on where you are, which shop you’re in and even what time of day you’re there.

Only briefly popped into M&S so far, but based on that mask-wearing has gone up from about 30% to maybe 70%, but that’s including lots of masks worn under noses etc. Quite a few staff not wearing them.

firef1y · 01/12/2021 11:35

Well I'm back to shopping local where everyone knows I'm exempt. Just the thought of wearing my lanyard again so everyone knows there's something "wrong" with me is stressing me out.

littlepeas · 01/12/2021 11:42

Hmm. Most people in them by me - I felt like saying 'good for you' to the few people without them tbh. I wear a mask but hate it - will be avoiding the shops as much as I possibly can until the option not to wear one returns.
