Yesterday my daughter had a VERY faint positive on a lateral flow that came up after 60 mins. Took her for a PCR which was negative (results received this morning). Have done another LFT this morning to double check and there's the faintest line ever. Like an indent on a pregnancy test. I honestly don't think I'd usually see it but I'm being so eagle eyed. It's her birthday and there's so much riding on it I just don't know what to do! LFTs are from different batches!

I can't see a line and if you have done a PCR it should be ok? Does she have any symptoms?

TheresAStarmanWaitingInTheSky · 20/11/2021 07:56

I can't see a second line?

claymodels · 20/11/2021 07:58

You are not supposed to read them at 60 minutes though - and this is why

Trixiefirecracker · 20/11/2021 08:00

Don’t read them at 60 mins. Read at 30 and then Chuck. I can’t see a lot of me anyway! PCR says she is clear.

Trixiefirecracker · 20/11/2021 08:00

*See a line! 🙄

TheresAStarmanWaitingInTheSky · 20/11/2021 08:01

Just to say, a relative had 2 PCR tests which were inconclusive. The 3rd PCR was positive. Surely her PCR would have been inconclusive or positive if she has covid?

Friolero · 20/11/2021 08:02

Like PPs have said you aren't supposed to read them after 30 minutes (or 15 minutes for the newer nose only ones).

When did the line on the second LFT appear?

TheresAStarmanWaitingInTheSky · 20/11/2021 08:03

Yes it's true you read them at 30 minutes. People I know who positive lateral flows, the line came up quickly.

JanglyBeads · 20/11/2021 08:03

I can see a faint line in the middle pic. Are the pics all of the same test? Do you a party or outing planned?

You’ve had two faint positives. Presumably today’s result was within the specified result window (15 or 30 mins depending on the test brand). Only 4% of LFT positives are false. I guess the official advice would be to PCR again following this morning’s result.

I’m sorry OP. How old is she?

JanglyBeads · 20/11/2021 08:05

It doesn’t work like that, some people take a few days after infection to show on a PCR. 30% of PCR negatives are false.
newtolineofduty · 20/11/2021 08:05

Thanks everyone! The picture is today's LFT read after 30 mins! Yes we had a weekend away and party planned (we cancelled everything yesterday but wondered if we could salvage some of it). She's 3 and so upset 😭😭😭 xxx

They are positive.. my sons exactly the same a week ago. Pcr positive. You need to repeat pcr to make sure

claymodels · 20/11/2021 08:16

I really don't understand why you have done another LFT this morning? You have read an LFT after the time, had a negative PCR yet decided to subject your child to another test today? Why?

courtshoe · 20/11/2021 08:23

So presuming she doesn't have symptoms, she's had a negative PCR, ( forget the lfts. I can't see a second line anyway) why are you cancelling?

saltontoast · 20/11/2021 08:54

I see a line

TheresAStarmanWaitingInTheSky · 20/11/2021 08:57

@JanglyBeads my relative's first 2 results were inconclusive which I presume is not negative. That's why they had to get further PCR tests. I don't know all the ins and outs but would think there was a low level of virus present in the first 2 tests. Then the 3rd test was positive.

Sorry OP about your daughters birthday.

newtolineofduty · 20/11/2021 08:58

Because she does have symptoms and I don't want to be spreading the virus. Done lots of reading and it seems that LFTs pick it up earlier than PCRs. Advice is to get another PCR x

mooity · 20/11/2021 09:05

Is she symptomatic? Or been a close contact in the last 5 days? One of my dc’s had 2 faint positive LFD’s (but could see the pink line easily on a photo) followed by a negative PCR. He was asymptomatic and we did it as visiting grandparents. We treated him as negative.

If you are reading the results after the time and the line isn’t obviously pink but more of a shadow then it will just be the test line you are seeing anyway and not a positive line.

She didn't need the LFTs at all then!!

Yellowmellow2 · 20/11/2021 09:17

Advice is that, if you have a positive LF and symptoms, you should isolate. False positive LFs are very rare.

Yellowmellow2 · 20/11/2021 09:17

Must be within the time frame though, as others have said.

Whataday21 · 20/11/2021 09:31

Do one and read it at the correct time before you do anything. The nasal swab only devices seem to show a feint line more often.

Please don't do another test Sad

Poor kid is 3 and has been subjected to as many tests over the past 2 days. She has symptoms and they have cancelled whatever they were planning to do anyway so at this stage it's completely unnecessary to test again.

WholeClassKeptIn · 20/11/2021 09:35

She's probably just got a cold.

Negative lft (within time frame) and negative pcr..... Id just crack on.

newtolineofduty · 20/11/2021 09:50

The LFT was positive within the time frame this morning. Sorry I don't think my original post was totally clear on everything.

We're going to play it safe and isolate especially as she has symptoms xxx
