Good morning! I was wondering if anybody could confirm that there is no second line here.

It’s my five year olds who has been in close contact with a confirmed case. I couldn’t do the sample properly either which is causing me doubt. I had to fight him for the less than a second swab he allowed.

I think this is negative... it is isn’t it!?

If he’s been in close contact, he needs a PCR not lateral flow.

Lateral flows aren’t accurate I.e they miss a high proportion of positive cases. So don’t rely on it.

ColettesEarrings · 18/11/2021 08:43

I'd say negative but he needs a pcr really.

Inastatus · 18/11/2021 08:43

I can’t see any second line and as you have a line against the control panel it suggests the test has worked properly so you can assume it’s negative.

LoveComesQuickly · 18/11/2021 08:44

I think that's negative.

Googleboxfan · 18/11/2021 08:44

I can't see a second line. So it's negative. When was he is close contact?

Inastatus · 18/11/2021 08:45

Just to add, LFT’s picked up all our positive cases when myself, DS and DH got covid.

Iggly · 18/11/2021 08:46

Yes when they read positive, chances are they’re positive.

But if they’re negative, it doesn’t mean they’re right.

They call it high “specificity” but lower accuracy.

Daisymaybe60 · 18/11/2021 08:49

LFTs picked up our positive cases too. Mine had a thick dark second line that appeared in seconds, DH’s a very, very faint one after 20 minutes.

There’s no second line on yours, OP. It’s negative.

NameChanged15729 · 18/11/2021 08:50

Thank you everyone! He was in contact with said person on Saturday and Tuesday. They tested positive yesterday but had started showing symptoms the day before. Ds is also coughing but testing negative on the lateral flows.
He’s off school and we are awaiting a home PCR test that’s being delivered today. I’m just hoping he will let me get enough of a sample from the swab!

Seriously???

OP have you been hiding under a rock for 2 years?

Contact with positive case -> PCR

Symptoms -> PCR

At no point has the advice under your circumstances been to LFT.

Jesus. I am incredulous that so many people still think that they are somehow exempt from the procedures that have been in place for months.

Mindymomo · 18/11/2021 09:05

@NNat. No the line just indicates that virus has been found. Some people get a strong thick line straight away, others just a thin line. But only PCR tests can confirm accurately if the person definitely has covid.

OP. If your son is coughing, I wouldn’t be sending him to school.

OP has ordered a PCR and child is off school. I assume the LTF was interim whilst waiting.

Bit rude.

NameChanged15729 · 18/11/2021 09:58

UhOhOops and now I have discovered the reason I stay away from the covid board Hmm

I have ordered and am waiting on a delivery for a PCR test for everyone in the household. I ordered it yesterday when the close contact tested positive but unfortunately I can’t get the delivery driver to send the tests through astral projection...

I keep lft’s in the house so I didn’t think it would be crime of the century to try and get an idea of the results while I was waiting anyway!

So put that in your post then.

An 'am I being overcautious to lft if....' post, giving the full story, telling folk that you've had close contact, have symtoms and have ALREADY ordered PCR tests but lft in the meantime would have been far more sensible (and not attracted the ire of posters like me who are facing daily challenges of folk who just don't get it 2 years in).

NameChanged15729 · 18/11/2021 10:25

It wasn’t an ‘am I being overcautious post...’
I was asking if anybody else could see a second line because I’d stared at the damn thing for so long I couldn’t tell anymore.

Quite frankly I’m well aware of the covid rules and I follow them to a t. Household double jabbed yada yada.
What I absolutely despise is people who have taken the pandemic as an excuse to be hostile to anybody who they perceive to not follow the rules in ‘their way’. Jumping down and belittling folks for not having the vaccine (what happened to body autonomy!?) for not putting there life story in a post where it wasn’t relevant to the question, or heaven forbid, wanting to try and live without being reminded of the misery covid has inflicted on them.

@UhOhOops - very rude and bossy. The OP doesn’t need you to tell her what she should put in her own post! She simply asked if people thought the lft was negative.

You really need to calm down.

If you read the post OP has said she has ordered a PCR. She's done the right thing by doing a LFT while she waits.

Mybalconyiscracking · 18/11/2021 12:30

And here I am wondering when we are going to stop torturing 5 yo with this shit?

Tototipple · 18/11/2021 12:30

If it helps my 5yo will do one for chocolate? I bribe like crazy. I also show them me doing a test first.

VsgKitt · 18/11/2021 12:32

Get a PCR.

We were all getting positive LFTs, but one DS was negative everytime. His PCR came back positive same as ours

randomsabreuse · 18/11/2021 12:32

Actually "low risk" school contacts in Scotland request a lat flow if possible... as per the letter from the school last week!

She did put 10 minutes before your comments that her son was off school until they had the results of the PCR tests that she had ordered for the whole family.

same as in our school. 9 kids in DS1s class of 16 had it and the school told us guidance was for LFTs.

besides, the rules bloody change all the time so it can be hard to keep up with it. Personally (because I am slightly paranoid) i check into Gov UK about once a week, but as I said I am a bit paranoid.
