NHS letter for dd saying she needs two doses

We received an NHS letter this morning saying that dd should have two doses of the covid vaccine due to her having a condition that means she may suffer more complications from covid….except I’m not aware that she does have a condition that makes her more at risk 🤷🏽‍♀️.

Her only ‘conditions’ are food intolerances and asd, neither of which would make her more at risk! I’ve phoned my gp who were just as mystified and are going to look into it for me.

I just wondered if anyone else had had this issue?

We got the same today and the only similarity with you is that DS is also autistic. Surely that isn't a risk factor? Confused

I think it’ll be the ASD. People with learning disabilities (taken as a very broad brush category) have had poorer outcomes after catching COVID.

I was surprised when my son with ASD was a high priority for vaccination last year, but that was the explanation we were given.

It doesn’t mean she’s at higher risk. It means she’s flagged as falling into a category that on average has a higher risk.

I said to the gp receptionist that the asd was the only condition I could possibly think of but we agreed that it was unlikely.

I said about the possibility of some children with asd being less able to social distance etc. It doesn’t help that the letter said ‘increased risk of complications’ which isn’t quite the same 🤷🏽‍♀️🙄.

My DD has had the same. She doesn't have ASD. She has a very mild bleeding disorder which requires outpatients appointments once a year. I think they've done a trawl of every child who has any ongoing medical /care input and added them to the 2 jab list.

We've had one of those for DS 12, he's perfectly healthy. The only thing I can think of was a bit of a heart murmur as a baby that there was no concern about

Yes, I’d like to hear what they have to say.

What ARE the reasons for teens not getting two doses? Money or are there increased risks with the second?

I also got one for my ASD teen today. He has no health issues at all so it must be the ASD. He won't even have one though, let alone two (his choice, not mine).

Take it up. You'll be able to go abroad easier as most EU countries are vaccinating teenagers twice (and don't count a single jab as "fully vaccinated").

We’ve had the same, possibly because of a since resolved medical condition. We’re going to take her to have the second one, because other countries are, so I feel reassured about its safety/effectiveness and (shallow, I know) it’ll make travelling possible.

Autism is on the list of conditions that make you more vulnerable to covid. It was added in September having reviewed data of children admitted to hospital etc so children with Autism were added to the vaccine list before it was rolled out to all 12-15 year olds. My son had his first dose in September.

I heard the letters are sent in error. There is a reason they are only given 1 dose. I can’t remember but I think 2 doses are linked to some condition they can develop. Sorry not much details there.

Heard from who?
What is the reason?
What condition?

Posting this kind of vague nonsense is really dangerous please either be specific with what your concerns are or don’t bother.

Sorry, Angel, that was to Clockover, who would apparently like to take the discussion outside.

Clockover, I have a son with ASD. I possibly also have a daughter with ASD. I have seen it put on medical records, school notes and university SAC forms under mental health condition, mental illness, developmental disorder, learning difficulty, neurological difference and god knows what else. You get tired of arguing. I’m sorry if I offended you.

It’ll still be the reason that my son and the OP’s daughter are a higher priority for vaccination.

@AppleKatie, it’s not vague nonsense though I was vague. It’s linked to inflammation of the heart (2 doses -google it sorry can’t post links). I heard about the letters sent in error when I went to the vaccine centre to have my child vaccinated. The person checking us in said he had had to turn lots of people away as letter about second dose sent in error.
