NHS letter for dd saying she needs two doses

We received an NHS letter this morning saying that dd should have two doses of the covid vaccine due to her having a condition that means she may suffer more complications from covid….except I’m not aware that she does have a condition that makes her more at risk 🤷🏽‍♀️.

Her only ‘conditions’ are food intolerances and asd, neither of which would make her more at risk! I’ve phoned my gp who were just as mystified and are going to look into it for me.

I just wondered if anyone else had had this issue?

My child is autistic but we don't have the letter. She was referred from school to paediatritian and diagnosed so although letter was sent to the GP I wonder if she isn't flagged on GP records.

Does that mean autistic adults are CV too?

ImmortalCandle · 28/10/2021 12:24

We haven't had the letter for asd child either yet. Hmm.

The vaccinators at the clinic knew nothing about autistic children getting a second dose...

CakesOfVersailles · 29/10/2021 02:10

All kids 12+ in my home country are getting two doses. I don't really understand the 1 dose business (1 dose is not really very effective and a second dose is not considerably more risky than the first). So I would take the second dose for sure.

Ds had one. I think it was because he had his apoendix out in summer 2020.
He then got given the flu jab in the autumn, which he'd never been offered before.
I suspect having got in the extra jabs list, he's stayed.
I'm pleased. When he is ill, he tends to get it badly, and one dose, from what I've read, isn't anything like as good.

@BlackeyedSusan

Does that mean autistic adults are CV too?
Under a general umbrella I think yes. It is to do with a person with autism (or learning disability) may not understand that they need to socially distance etc and may not be able to explain how they are physically feeling/suffering and receive help in time if needed. They are considered unable to protect themselves in this scenario.

NB this is a generalisation to all people with learning disability (yes, I know autism isn't always considered a learning disability but the HCP who explained it to us said that they were to class it as one for the purpose of vaccinating as it would be too time consuming to separate each branch out).

My daughter is high functioning and doesn't have any issues with learning/understanding but was still vaccinated for covid early and received flu vaccine free on NHS due to it.

Adults with learning disabilities fell into group 6 on the vaccination program I believe.

At the beginning I was told I was CEV - I received 2 letters and many texts to this effect. Discussed with GP and she said it was nonsense. Some months later I had a text telling me I was not CEV.

The children one was "outcomes worse for children with autism..." As an explanation.

No explanation of if it is physical due to brain wiring being different

Or sensory issues in that can't feel there is a problem.

Or communication... can't tell how feel or don't know to tell

Or due to co morbidity but one would expect if that they would be named as the thing which triggers eligibility.

As a parent to an adult with autism, my first guess would be difficulties in complying with treatment or coping with hospitalization, instead of (or maybe as well as) greater risk from the disease itself.

Rinoachicken · 01/11/2021 12:20

DS1 just had his first dose. We haven’t had a letter about him having 2 doses and the vaccinators at the clinic didn’t say anything about a 2nd dose when he told them he was autistic.

Should I be calling our GP to find out?

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 01/11/2021 18:36

I spoke to my GP today and they confirmed that Asd has been added to the CV list.
