Constant smell of cigarette smoke

Draculahhh · 26/10/2021 18:53

I caught covid at the end of August and along with it went my sense of smell. It took a while to come back but it's wrong, all I can smell is cigarette smoke. All. The. Time.

No one in my house smokes and we have no close neighbours who do either, it's making me feel sick. Has anyone else gone through this?

I get this a lot. Not covid related as had it for a couple of years but I can often smell smoke when there is none around and if I do actually smell smoke then I can smell and taste it so strongly for days. It has a name like phantosmia - I think some people have reported it after covid. It is really annoying Hmm

Bobholll · 26/10/2021 19:01

I think a burning smell is really common unfortunately. I’ve got a weird burning kinda smell going on although I can’t pinpoint what’s burning! My friend has to get up in the night as she wakes up smelling smoke & has to check her house 😩

StrangeAddiction · 26/10/2021 19:40

Yes I've had this and I mentioned it on another thread last week. It lasted about two weeks and seems to have gone now thankfully as it was so annoying!

Kitcat122 · 26/10/2021 19:40

When my smell was (very slowly) returning after Covid I would smell cigarette smoke all the time. It eventually lessened and disappeared.

Viviennemary · 26/10/2021 19:43

Yes I had this. No sense of smell or taste. Then this smoke smell. Same as you nobody in the house smokes. It goes away eventually.

ParkheadParadise · 26/10/2021 19:47

Yes me too
I've been asking everyone who comes into the house if they can smell it.

Cheerbear23 · 26/10/2021 19:51

Yes my DS kept saying he could smell poo for a long time afterwards ☹️. Also wine tastes very sour and unappealing to me now. We had Covid in January.

BlowDryRat · 26/10/2021 21:03

Yes, I have a strong smell of smoke all the time.

CarbsAreNotMyFriend · 26/10/2021 21:05

I had this too! I was beginning to worry it was something more sinister, I hadn't even made the connection with covid (which I had a couple of months ago).

The smoke smell has gone now thankfully

BlowDryRat · 26/10/2021 21:06

How long did it take for it to go @CarbsAreNotMyFriend?

usernotfound0000 · 26/10/2021 21:13

I literally googled this today to see what is going on! I had Covid back in February, I did lose my taste and smell for about a week and did have the constant cigarette smoke thing for a few weeks then, but been fine ever since. This last week it has been every night and driving me crazy.

Draculahhh · 26/10/2021 22:11

It's so odd, it seems to come in waves. It appears really strong then fades and comes back.
I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one though, I was starting to freak out about it!

I also had this @Draculahhh. It lasted about a month for me. Thanks for posting, it’s good to know others have had the same.

User9911 · 26/10/2021 22:21

Yes! I have this. Researched it and it’s very common after Covid. There is full Facebook support pages for it. It’s called Parosoma or something. Apparently Covid destroys the connections from nose to brain then they grow back In the wrong place so smells and tastes are wrong.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 26/10/2021 22:22

I had Covid last December and my sense of smell seems to be permanently altered by it Sad Coffee smells very strange now. I will often ask people around me what they can smell because I can’t trust my own nose any more.

Blackpoolhotelier · 26/10/2021 22:22

I also had this but it's gone now. Lasted a month or two

CarbsAreNotMyFriend · 27/10/2021 01:16

@BlowDryRat

How long did it take for it to go *@CarbsAreNotMyFriend*?
It's one of those things that I actually didn't notice disappearing, it happened gradually. It's just over 2 months since I first got covid, and I haven't noticed the smell for a couple of weeks
MrsAvocet · 27/10/2021 01:31

I had this for a while, interspersed with smelling gas. The combination coukd have been rather alarming were it not for the fact that nobody in our house smokes and we don't have a gas supply - just as well really!
The cigarette smell went after a couple of weeks but I am still getting the gas thing a lot. Irritatingly a lot of food smells, and sonehow tastes of gas. Hope we all get some relief from these horrid symptoms soon.

lostinthoughts · 27/10/2021 20:13

I'm around 4 weeks post covid and I was delighted when my smell returned around a week ago, only to be replaced with the constant smell of stale cigarette smoke smell. Such a weird disease

Bubbublish · 28/10/2021 04:59

Yes, I smell either smoke or poo! It's very strange!!

itsgettingwierd · 28/10/2021 07:49

Wow this is interesting.

I had covid last March. Totally lost sense of smell 4 days before they even said it was a symptom! No testing back then but all 3 symptoms so confirmed very likely.

Double jabbed.

A few weeks ago covid was in my workplace. A school! Plenty of people with covid and others with "the bad cold". We all had same symptoms except those with covid lost smell.

But since then I've also had the smoke and poo smell. (Gone now but had it for 3 weeks after) I also had some spot bleeding despite being on northisterone which I never get and I've been on it over a year.

I kept saying it's odd how some had covid and others didnt despite all getting ill at same time with same illness (3 whole classes). Knowing covid cocks up cycle and now hearing others had the same smell I'm wondering if we did have covid.

Especially as some of us also got texts to say we had tests that could have been false negatives due to that cock up 🤦‍♀️

Clovie · 28/10/2021 08:27

We all had covid a couple of weeks ago, out of isolation at the weekend. All I can smell is cat pee, all my dp can smell and taste is tobacco. He says it is like when you roll a cigarette and get a bit of tobacco in your mouth. Neither of us smoke anymore and haven’t done for years. The cat pee smell is really starting to piss me off, my cats haven’t peed anywhere except the litter tray and no one else can smell it.

Bluebellfae · 28/10/2021 15:36

I think i had covid last year before testing was available like it is now. Since then I've had a strong smell of campfire /smoke come on suddenly with overwhelming fatigue. It comes on out of the blue and the smell is inside my nose lining its so annoying. Ive also had loads of twitching muscles in my legs. It all settled down but the smell came on again a couple of weeks ago its horrible xx

Interesting because I got the smell back a few weeks ago and have also suffered twitching legs.
itsgettingwierd · 28/10/2021 15:50

Oh and the sudden fatigue occasionally. And it's severe fatigue and I lay down and go into a deep sleep for about 10 minutes as soon as I can. Before that I'm fighting to stay awake.
