Describe to me your COVID cough

MegaGengar · 22/10/2021 22:53

Having a tricky time with a family member with a cough over the definition of “continuous cough”.

For those who have had a cough with COVID, please could you describe your cough to me?

Was it coughing non stop for a few minutes at a time? Or as single cough every 10 mins? Or just a clearing of your throat?

Thank you.

Like a cough you get when you’re getting a regular cold or the flu.
Basically if you start coughing, do a pcr.
My cough was chesty not dry. And I was a bit sneezy.
There’s an American online symptom checker which is a zillion times better than the pathetic vague list of 3 symptoms that we have.

Thanks. I had a look on CDC and they just mention “cough”. Easier to give a yes/no answer to!

DD just had a headache and sneezing, no cough, temperature or loss of taste/smell at all. Everyone I know who's had covid recently has had very similar symptoms to these.

Loubiemoo · 22/10/2021 23:17

Initially the only symptom I had was a cough when I tested positive.

DotBall · 22/10/2021 23:18

Mine started off as an occasional dry tickly cough during the course of one day. It soon became a hacking gut wrencher that came in bouts and lasted a good couple of weeks and eased off. Worse at night than in the day.

WitchyNameChange · 22/10/2021 23:38

Mine was just an occasional throat clearing type cough.

onthinice · 22/10/2021 23:46

Occasional dry tickly cough.

AutumnLeafy · 23/10/2021 06:37

a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)

NHS says this. I don't know if a "coughing episode" is 1 cough or what though.

Suzi888 · 23/10/2021 06:38

My relatives had no cough, they just felt sick.

Yes that’s the issue we were having too.

My whole household is positive, only one of them has a cough. It's a deep, barky cough like a chest infection cough but not constant.

Hope you all feel better soon. How often does the cough happen?

Mine was a cough like I've never had before, like my body was trying to cough the bottom of my lungs up, a really strong cough, not a tickly little one you could do quietly x

Porcupineintherough · 23/10/2021 07:14

Honestly, if in doubt do a test. Its widely variable, even within a bout of COVID. The first time I had it is disnt check at all for the first week and then got a painful, unproductive cough which lasted weeks. Second time it started with a dry, tickly cough and I was coughing every few hours for 6 hours (long enough to convince me to book a test) then it disappeared for 2 days then came back with a vengeance.

Dh on the other had never coughed at all really, he just occasionally cleared his throat.

Porcupineintherough · 23/10/2021 07:15

??? I didnt cough at all for the first week

Sorry about that

ThatsWhatI · 23/10/2021 07:17

It just means are you coughing a few times a day or more

JurgensCakeBaby · 23/10/2021 07:19

I had Covid in the first lockdown, I had a crushing headache, temperature, lots of taste and smell and a dry cough that was so persistent it would stop stop me talking and I'd have bouts of coughing where I could barely catch my breath for several minutes, it also kept me awake. However my understanding is that Delta variant which is the most prevalent now presents with more general cold and flu like symptoms.

pompomsgalore · 23/10/2021 07:29

I've had this discussion with our dr. He said any cough = test.

MegaGengar · 25/10/2021 16:35

Well my son has now tested positive, and I don't have a cough but feel like I'm about to cough - not sure if that even makes sense!

Should have added I've already done a PCR test today as a contact

I had a very infrequent dry, tickly cough for one day. My DPs cough just sounded like a normal cough you would get with a cold or chest infection

Bobholll · 25/10/2021 17:21

Like a regular cough really. Coughing on & off throughout the day. Relatively dry. Worse at night laying down. It wasn’t anything awful but also quite annoying. It kept me awake for a few days.

AtlanticCityProof · 25/10/2021 18:03

The interesting thing was that for the first three days my cough was completely suppressable. I mean I could swallow and the desire went away.
It became more prolonged and uncontrollable, but always fairly intermittent.

TiddleTaddleTat · 25/10/2021 18:09

I had a dry 'clearing throat' type cough for weeks the first time I had Covid (first wave). This time the cough I have is chesty and productive ,quite different . Started after the headache, became chestier, and has started to ease off a bit on day 13. I have coughing episodes as well as occasional odd coughs.
